My wife and I are planning a trip to Scotland sometime in Sept. we are planning on staying in Edinburgh. I am looking for any insights on what courses are must plays, and what pubs are must visits etc...

Hi mate, you'll have a great time. I know there's a few guys from Scotland on the site so they'll tell you more than me but from personal experience you've got to make the trip to St Andrews. Hire a car or get the train. Even if you don't play you've got the history of golf museum there. If you don't make the trip there's a local course called Mortonhall which is superb.

As far as pubs go, there's no shortage of options. It depends on what you're after but my general rule of thumb is to stay away from wine bars and fine somewhere traditional. You'll get a better pint!

Edinburgh's a beautiful city so you won't go too far wrong anywhere. Have fun.

Hi,

There are some great courses in and around Edinburgh as well as in Fife. You should definately try and get a game on the East course at Dalmahoy. its 7000+ yards off the medal tees, great views and a really good test. if you fancy something a bit shorter, there is the West Course also at Dalmahoy. Great test of the shorter clubs in your bag. Musselburgh Golf Course is also a great track, well worth a visit. If you are coming over to Fife there are loads of great wee courses that are far well less known that the courses in the north of Fife. Try places like Aberdour, Burntisland, Pitrievie Golf Club (this was designed by Alastair Mckenzie who as im sure you know contributed to the design of Augusta), or Dunfermline golf club. All of these are good courses and worth a visit. Further North in Fife you'll find places like Ladybank, Kingsbarns, St. Andrews Bay or the Castle Course. With the exception of Kingsbarns, these are far easier to get a game on and you wont have to book months in advance. There are lots of great courses in the Dundee area. Places such as Downfield, Panmure, Monifeith Medal and of course Gleneagles. Again, with the exception of perhaps Gleneagles, you wont have to book a long time in advance. there are however a few course at Gleneagles so if you really want to play there you should be able to get a game at some point. There is also two course at Murrayshall in Perth that are well worth a visit. If you are travelling further north in Scotland, a trip to Boat of Garten up near Inverness is a definate. Amazing course, with even bettter views. There is also Spey Valley and Kingussie. Both of these offer the same great views as Boat of Garten but in my opinion, Boat of Garten is a nicer course.

All of the courses mentioned should be easy to find, they will be on any Sat Nav.
Hope this helps,

Cheers

Stephen

And i have only just realised that your trip was planned nearly three years ago so this is of absolutely no use to you. Might help anyone planning a trip to Scotland in the future though

East Lothian has some of the best courses in Scotland (slightly bias as I'm a member of one of them - Craigielaw), 20 - 25 minutes drive east of Edinburgh. Check out www.golfeastlothian.com for more details

And, like Steven, have just realized your trip was planned for 2007

Despite this being a bit out of date I would second Craigielaw, my Uncle is a member there and I get the privilege to play there every time we go up to visit, some tricky Par 3's when the wind kicks up.
