In Denver next week...

Decided to take a vacation away from my home (Oklahoma City) next Wednesday through Saturday. I've actually been thinking about moving to the Denver metro within the next 6 months. Figured this would give me a better idea to scope out and get a feel for the area. Are there any places or things I should check out while I'm there? Got a blank page and needing to fill it up with things to do while I'm there. Figured I'll take a trip up to Boulder & Fort Collins one day to check out the campuses there.

On the other hand, I'm bringing my clubs with me. I've been doing some research and trying to get a good idea what courses I'm going to play. My golf budget will be $125-$175 and I figure I'd like to get 54 holes in.

Here is the list I've generated that I'll be considering... it's quite a big list lol...

-Bear Dance, Fossil Trace, Arrowhead, Riverdale Dunes, Colorado National, Legacy Ridge, Heritage - Westmoor, Hyland Hills, The Ridge (CP), Murphy Creek, Highland Meadows, Heritage Todd Creek, & Green Valley Ranch.

I like courses that are challenging, in good shape, not completely flat, and would like to play one that has an awesome view of the mountains. One of my favorite courses is Prairie Dunes in KS, I wonder if there's anything up there with a similar layout? Also if anyone knows of any green punching taking place at any of those courses feel free to chime in. Thanks :)

Arrowhead, be it not the best course, has probably some of the best views in Colorado for golf.

If you want a difficult but beautiful course Bear Dance is a great course but kind of expensive. So is Arrowhead.

I live in Fort Collins and love it up here. Great city and tons of beer.

I've heard lots of good things about Bear Dance but I looked through the photo gallery & weren't too impressed for the cost of it. I dunno, will probably play one of the "premium" courses though.

So, got back late last night. What a cool city! The weather was great, I really enjoyed the area, so on to the golf we played.

Colorado National. Course was pretty fun, but nothing that really screamed "play me again!"
The fairways were in sweet condition and the greens overall were in nice shape(better than AZ) but the speeds seemed inconsistent from green to green, with some of them being pretty heavily ball-marked, and some were slightly sandy, too. Pace of play was SLOOOOOOOOW, 5 1/2 hours. Managed to shoot a smooth 43/36 with a triple and 3 doubles haha. Had the back nine to -3 at one point, then blew it.

Murphy Creek was freaking awesome. Great layout, great conditions, solid pace of play. Greens were some of the better ones I have putted on. I guess my only complaint would be that it was $60 to ride, and the carts are real old school, and you get no yardage guide or anything. Maybe I'm being a cheapo, but $60 is not a cheap round in my book. Still, I'd take Murphy Creek hands down over Colorado National. Every hole was different, some tough par 3's. I played like hell, 85 :russian_roulette:

We just did Bear Dance. Nothing special and pricey, greens were pretty beat up, it was a good day to be hitting the driver straight! IIRC Riverdale aerated several weeks back and should be good again, might play the Dunes this weekend. IMHO, best value and one of the best courses near Denver. I'd check on green conditions as Fossil Trace and Fox Hollow are doing theirs now.

Definitely going to hit up Riverdale while I'm there. I couldn't pick between Fossil, Bear, The Ridge, & Arrowhead. But hearing Fossil is doing their greens now & the comment about the Bear I'll likely not be playing them. So I got Riverdale, and gotta pick two of these: Ridge, Arrowhead, Legacy, Heritage Westmoor, Murphy, CU National, & GVR. I have a feeling Westmoor will be my 2nd selection, just need one more to sweeten the deal. Also, if any of you wanna play any of these courses I've mentioned I'll likely be hitting one of them up each day (Wed, Thur, & Fri)...

The Ridge at Castle Pines is a great track and the back 9 has the wooded mountain feel that the Golf Club at Castle Pines (International Course) has. Mostly because they are on the same land. But you can't get on the Golf Club.

Green Valley Ranch is BOOORING. SImply a joke. Flat and sprawling.

Murphy Creek is a good test and is usually well maintained. But again - The Ridge!!

So Riverdale Dunes, Heritage - Westmoor, and The Ridge @ CP it is. I'll call tomorrow to check up on course conditions. I'm still considering CU National & Arrowhead as potential replacements lol. Does anyone know of any specials I can find for these courses? I came across a $40 online special for Westmoor, but not sure about the others.

You have a very good list of courses there to play. Dunes is great if its in good condition. If your going up to Ft. Collins you could consider Pelican Lakes. It has the most water of any course in the country, if you can believe it. Hyland Meadows is also good up on the northern side.

If your going down to Castle Rock you could consider Red Hawk Ridge. A nice Jim Engh design. He also designed Fossil Trace and numerous others here in Colorado. I would suggest playing a Jim Engh course while your in Colorado. Very unique designs and a lot of people tend to hate or love them.

In Denver, Common Ground is very nice. Tom Doak designed it and it it one of the better public courses in the Metro Denver area. Definitely play Heritage at Westmoor, don't replace it, as it is one of my favorites here in the Denver area.

Golfnow tends to have good deals. But look on courses websites for deals or sign up for their email list to get good deals.

I will pm you my number if you want a playing buddy. I can make no promises on getting out but if you want to ask me questions about anything Denver/Colorado related feel free. I have played good portion of the courses here in Colorado.

Wow to each their own I guess. I would not call Green Valley Ranch boring or easy and I would not consider The Ridge that tough of a course. It is fun though.

I like GVR and Buffalo Run, thought the Ridge was very similar to Bear Dance, BD doesn't have as many houses, and almost as overpriced. Red Hawk is a blast, plus you can get good rates from Golf Now, I love Engh courses, have played Red Hawk, Fossil Trace, Lakota, Redlands and should get on Awari soon. (Kearney Nebraska)

I wasn't talking about ease. But GVR is not a tough track until you get to 16,17,18. It's just not enjoyable enough to hold my attention. I don't know anyone that likes it. They play the Colorado Open there for some reason. We can't figure it out.

The Ridge is pretty and holds your attention with massive elevation changes.- especially if you are coming in from out of state - it gives you that colorado feel.

Photo 1 is Green Valley Ranch -- photo #2 is the Ridge at Castle Pines. You pick what you want in a course.

Thanks for everyone's input! I plan on playing Dunes tomorrow after lunch, Westmoor Thursday morning, and still deciding for one more, either Thursday afternoon or sometime Friday. I called Fossil Trace & they said the greens are in good shape again since they were done about 2 weeks ago. As mentioned I wouldn't mind playing an Engh course, but wouldn't mind playing The Ridge either. I could save $15 or $20 and play Legacy Ridge, Highland Meadows, or something, but is the extra $15-$20 worth spending on one of the Engh courses or Ridge? I might even walk one or two courses, I just wonder how easy it is for these high altitude courses to wear a person out?

I usually book the Dunes on their web site. Have you tried Golf now for Red Hawk? I can't remember how the courses would be for walking, weather looks kind of crappy for your visit.

Yep. It was looking decent for the past 3 days and then this rain forecast shows up :(
