Here's one for you guys. What did Feherty have in the bag when he played in the late 80s/early 90s?

Had to know we weren't going to make it through the thread without someone making a tasteless joke about the man's alcoholism. Every clip I've seen had him with different sticks. The Hogan endorsement was basically at the end of his competitive days. It was always blades, though...

Recall seeing him play in Ryder Cup w/ MacGregor PMB Blades, then switched to Hogan Redlines, then towards end of playing career Apex Plus and FTX. I also recall him using the original grey cobra 14* deepface 3 wood and 975d driver towards end of career before endorsing the trimetal fairways, also used a ping zing2 becu putter extensively.

You must be thinking of someone else...most of those clubs didn't even exist yet when Feherty retired in 1996.

I know Feherty to be a Wilson man, but I believe he also suffered from ho syndrome like the rest of us.

Not tasteless in my opinion. I have great respect for him because he jokes about it himself and is more self-deprecating than anyone I've ever seen on television, or anywhere else for that matter.

It would also be cool to see what all the CBS guys played in their prime.

McCord, Finchy, etc.

Great show David!

Let's see, Redlines were '88, MacGregors may not have been PMBs but definitely blades, ,ping becu putters definitely WAY before '96, original grey cobra deepface in approximately '90, 975d in late 94, early 95 (hence 975d), as stated above, all of these were towards END of playing career, the trimetals and later model Hogans were after had "retired" and prior to biking accident, but you are right.... I must have been thinking about someone else since discussed equipment with the man himself while I was playing in Troops First fundraiser......
[/quote]

The Redlines did come out in 1988 at which point Feherty was a Wilson contract player using the FG-17. He couldn't possibly have used the MacGregor PMB for the Ryder Cup you supposedly saw him play in, because his only appearance was in 1991 which is 8 years before the PMB existed. The 975D came out in 1997 not 1994 or 1995, in fact the design team for the 975D wasn't even completed until 1996 and the driver wasn't ready until 1997. The Cobra deep face came out in 1993, not 1990. As late as 1995, his last full season, Feherty was still a devout persimmon wood user and didn't have a metal wood in the bag.

As for the others, the question was about what he played in the late 1980s/1990s, not after he retired.

  • 2 months later...

In the late 80s he was a Wilson staffer and bagging a set of Wilson Staff blades, from what I remember, together with what always struck me as a curious choice of club, a graphite-shafted Yonex Carboniron pitching wedge, and a steel Ping Eye 2 sand wedge with a heavily ground sole. The wedge was a very strange choice and, as I remember, the striking area and lower quarter of the face were almost grey/white from pretty advanced face wear to the graphite and resin. It was obviously a favourite club, though, as he played it, in that state, for a while; stock graphite shaft and all.

He switched to Slazenger's Seve signature blades in the early/mid '90s, with an old Wilson Staff pitching wedge replacing what presumably was by then a worn-out Yonex wedge and the same Ping sand wedge. His putter of choice back then was generally an old Acushnet Bullseye, but I remember him bagging both a black TP Mills and a black-finished Maxfli Tad Moore (similar to the ones Rocca and Seve both played) in the mid '90s, too. He had an old Mizuno TP11 1-iron which he used to carry in place of a 4-wood, too, on occasion. Most of his irons were plastered in lead tape back then, so it wasn't always easy to tell what was what. I remember seeing him at Wentworth one year c. 1993 with a big Titleist bag, but with the putter being the only Titleist club in it. The above Mizuno/Slazenger/Wilson combo made up the other 13.

In the early '90s I think he was still bagging that pair of Mizuno TP persimmon woods - a driver and strong-lofted spoon - but I seem to remember him being one of the first people to put Founders Club metals into his bag, even if only fleetingly. Certainly, at Turnberry in the 1994 Open he was bagging one or two of them in the fairway wood slots, but I do remember him still playing persimmons for a while after most European Tour pros (Langer and Forsbrand perhaps excepted) had ditched them.

As far as the Kiawah Ryder Cup went, I think it was the Mizuno TP woods, that TP11 1-iron and the Slazenger blades that were in the bag. The Eye 2 sand wedge and the Bullseye putter were certainly in there.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure about the 975D debuting in 1994. The first player I remember seeing with one was Justin Leonard, when he won the Open Championship in the summer of 1997 with an EI70-shafted one in the (Hogan) bag. I didn't have a clue what it was, even from up-close, until I read an article some time later about Titleist's new titanium driver. After Davis Love also won with one, they were pretty hot news that summer. Callaway were the first mainstream OEM that I remember to use titanium castings for their drivers (by Ruger, I think) and even that was a year or so after 1994.

Must have been sleep-typing during earlier posts, absolutely was wrong about the 975d, was getting information confused as had read a piece just prior about Terry MCabe, one of the designers of the 975d and 976r, who came over from Founder's Club. From that piece recalled that three of Founder's biggest proponents of the fresh metal fairways were Irwin, Watkins, and Feherty.
