What brand makes the best carry/stand bags?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm in the market for a new carry bag. I walk quite a bit and am not satisfied with my Taylormade carry bag that is around a year old now. The bag I have now is too heavy (I don't carry much besides my clubs), the legs don't go down properly all of the time, and there are metal "buttons" or snaps on the back (The kind that you would attach the rain hood to) that run against my back. I have heard good reviews on WRX about Ping and some about Titleist. I haven't seen many about Sun Mountain or Ogio though. Please post what stand bag you like the most. Also if I forgot a brand please feel free to say so. Thanks!

Sun mountain IMO smokes the rest if you walk. My ogio bags had zippers break and other parts totally fail after 3 months. Took it back got a sun mountain and was super pleased!

I just bought a Nike Performance bag and love it! It has plenty of storage and even has a cooler pocket, which is hard to find on a stand bag. Love the 14 way divider top. Very comfortable on the back. Also rides well on a cart.

Had a red SM 3.5. After 3 years the color had faded. Still a great bag for walking. Light, space for everything, and after 3 yrs the legs and zippers were still working like brand new. Just picked up a Ping 4 Series (not the 4 Under). I actually like it better. A little more rooms for clubs and I like the fact that I can adjust the shoulder pads to me. Price was better than the 3.5 also. Can't go wrong with either IMHO.

Ogio quality is second to none. Quality just weighs too much.

The legs on my first Four5 wouldn't lock causing a few dings on my irons after they crashed onto my kitchen floor.

I've had a Nike 14 way divider stand bag going on 4 seasons with no issues at all love the bag. Just no longer have any Nike clubs to go with it, although I may have to give the new LE woods a try.

I've had my Sun Mountain bag for 10 years and the only thing wrong with it was color fading from the sun! Not a single zipper broke and I absolutely loved this bag. The bag itself has well over 800 rounds played with it and I love the way it carries. I wont get rid of the bag until it breaks and I don't see that happening anytime soon!

I think Sun Mountain is the way to go. They very well constructed and the size and weight are what I would consider ideal. ... If you are a Titleist guy, the Titleist carry bags are just SM bags with Titleist logos on them

+1

SM make a great bag; as above, it is pretty clear to me that SM manufactures carry bags for Titleist (and for other OEMS, too, I imagine)

I've had the same Ogio Grom bag for at least 5 years and it is still in really good shape as far as the outside and pockets go. I recently noticed the inner divider sleeves are starting to tear. Ogio does a great job at providing various utilitarian additives - cell phone pocket, insulated water bottle pocket, scorecard/pencil pocket, easy lift handles...etc. When I buy a new bag there is a 99.9% chance it will be an Ogio.

Based on my experience and reviews I've read, I'd say you've had an very usual experience, but I wouldn't be surprised that it has tainted your view of Ogio.

I own 5 Ogio bags and had one with a minor defect with the metal bucket that covers the hole where the arm strap connects to the bag. Ogio was quick to replace it.

I own 2 Sun Mountain bags...a Four 5 and a Lightning ES. The Lightning ES has some stitching that has come lose exposing a a pocket.

I also own 2 Nike bags...a Sport Performance II and a Sumo Tour Stand bag. Overall, these have been a surprise. I bought them for a good price and thought they be a cheap extra bag, but they've held up VERY well and I've found them to be very usable and functional. Only grip on Nike is the rubber feet they use. The rubber feet basically install inside the leg and they fall out over time which means you get bare metal hitting the grass or pavement. I found that you can buy some cheap rubber coverings at a local hardware store that actually solve the problem. Just put them on the end and twist them on. They work just as good (if not better) than the original rubber feet.

I've previously owned other various brands such as the Mizuno Stand Bag (can't remember which one) which developed a hole in the ball pocket and an Adidas stand bag which was absolute junk. Almost forgot...I also had a Datrek stand bag and that served me well for years until the leg deployment stand on the bottom broke.

I would honest say that Ogio, Sun Mountain and Nike golf bags are great.

Ogio is by far the most functional, but also the heaviest. I love the pockets, well designed club systems, putter pocket, etc. If feels sturdy and well constructed.

Sun Mountain is by far the most usable...it is light, easy to carry and just seems to fit really well on the back. I like the 14-way top, but I hate that it doesn't have a dedicated putter pocket. I end up squeezing my putter in a slot designed for an iron shaft. Plus, my Four 5 won't just "stand up" on it's own (with no leg deployment)...it wants to lean forward and deploy the legs. Not a big deal, but it's something I noticed. Like the Ogio, it's well constructed, but doesn't quite have the heft.

Nike Bags...by far one of the best values. You can find Nike bags for a good price and it's somewhere in between the Ogio and Sun Mountain. It has some cool functionality (not quite as good as Ogio) and it's very usable (thought not quite as good as Sun Mountain). It's somewhere right in the middle. Construction...well, my initial impression was it wouldn't be as good as Ogio or Sun Mountain, but the Nike bags have continued to remain solid. I can't knock them on the quality.

I've owned 2 ogios, and when they both failed within 3 months, the employees where not surprised one bit. One sun mountain had a screw come loose and the support leg poked through, took it bak to golfsmith and the guys said they've never seen a SM bag fail

My experience with Ogio has been very poor. Their bags, while fully featured, are heavier and break down within months of purchase. I've had enough bad experience with Ogio (both their products and their service) that I won't use their products any more.

I agree, i had an ogio bag years ago and it didnt make it through an entire season.

I'd rather carry an extra pound and have a bag that will last which is what you get with the PING. Sun Mountain's carry bags have gotten way better the last coupe years but before that they were just crap. Sun Mountain is the #1 bag in golf much like TM is the #1 driver. You buy a Sun Mountain bag, take it home and load your stuff into it and it falls over (non carry bag) and its brand new. Their bags don't fit onto carts and the "cart strap" slots don't line up with either E-Z-GO or Club Car's straps yet they sell them like hot cakes!
