Where does Tiger's streak rank?

Recommended Posts

If you take out Tiger's non-cut events, like the Mercedes, his streak shrinks from 142 to 111, two short of Byron Nelson's 113. Now they are from different eras and no one doubts Tiger's epic streak but, where do you rank it among golf's other great achievments? Is it just an afterthought considering Tiger's other achievements?

Demo, love at ya for putting this project together. Here is my differences on your list.I'd bump Byron down from 2 and 4 to 7 and 8 and move every one up accordingly. The small problem I have with Byron is that he won during war time. He is an awesome golfer. It just bothers me about the timing of his wins. I might replace Charlie with the first black man to win because that emphasizes the accomplishment. The event with Charlie is more like a spiritual awakening for our civilization. Thoughts?

Nelson's record 1945 year possibly being tarnished because it was during the war is one of the bigest misunderstandings in sports records. Most people see 1945 and jump to the wrong conclusion because they do not know who was actually in the fields. While 1946 offered top to bottom stronger fields, in 1945 Nelson competed against Demaret, Wood, Hogan, and Snead. That's like the big 5 of today. In fact, Snead and Hogan had wins in 1945. Hogan briefly had the 72 hole scoring record and two weeks later Nelson broke it.

Nelson deserves all the credit for the best year ever in golf. 30 starts, 19 wins, 11 were in a row (actually 12, but the last one did not count), seven 2nd places. He lowered his scoring average a full stroke to 68.33 which was the record for 55 years until TW got it down to 67.79 (gee, maybe that should make the list?).

As for Charlie Sifford, it was not just the spiritual pick, he fought hard for his belief. Without him, Pete Brown may not have got the chance to get the first win.

One more thing about the Tiger streak. Sure, it is impressive. He is a grinder, never quits, and mostly consistent. No one can dispute that. But if you are as good as he is at golf the only thing the streak really speaks to is that you never just 'mail it in'. Why should that be so adored?

His 2000 scoring average of 67.79 is a far better accomplishment. 'Tiger Slam' - awesome. Nine wins in a year - awesome season. But being in the top 70 111 straight times when you only play 20 events a year and your scoring average is 2 under par??? That's like giving him an award for masterfully clearing his throat.
