shaft and swing weight change question

Ive recently bought a FT-5 with the stock Fujikura stiff E-150 shaft, 60g. stock swingwieght is D2. Now today, I put in my stiff Mamiya Axiv, 66g...and the result? a C9 swingweight! Both shafts have the same length...How could this be? i dont get it. So this means i have to add 3 lead strips, correct? will that through off the whole balance of the club?

Umm something is up with ur scale or something. It should be about a d-4 swing weight i do believe. Check you scale.

A local clubmaker did it, so im pretty sure his scale is correct. I put a tour velvet grip on it...could it make a difference of 3 swing weights? Is it possible that the shafts weight is biased towards the butt end? Anyone with a mamiya have this problem?

Seems unlikely. Some shafts are more counter balanced than others. Could be a combination of counter balancing and a heavy grip.

 

Check your swingweight scale again and then I guess it's back to some good old fashioned lead tape stuck to the back of the head!

There have been a few times when I've come across OEM grips that are lighter than your typical Golf Pride non-cord grip, but not by more than 5 grams or so at the butt end, so even if that were the case, that's less than one point of swingweight.

 

The much more likely explanation could be that the Mamiya has a different weight distribution and is slightly heavier in the mid/butt sections. This is common in the industry, both for tip weight bias and butt weight. A lot of the UST HTD shafts were butt weight biased. Many of the better Penley shafts were tip weight biased to help preserve swingweight.

 

But I've run across the same thing. I've had slightly heavier shafts produce lighter swingweights at the exact same length and grip set up on reshafting.

 

A dry fitting of the components should have given the clubmaker an idea this was going to happen. I always check for this first, and then decide whether to add a little length or vice versa.

 

On a driver, 1/2" isn't very much length in the grand scheme of things, but it's a full 3 points on the scale. Sometimes you can get slight differences in the way that the clubmaker measures finished length compared to the way the OEM does it. Unless the clubmaker cut the new shaft to the exact length of the old one (which often they don't because it usually involves the extra step of removing the grip), a very small difference...1/4" could be contributing to some or most of the change. A heavier grip might be helping.

 

Six grams of lead tape won't be enough to have any effect other than the weighting of the head. There are several tour pros that just wrap it around the shaft right at the base near the hosel.

Hi

Your problem is due to the replacement shaft being heavier in the butt section. Therefore the sw change. The Harmon CB ( counter balance) or Nippon WT 6000 shafts have more weight in the butt section of the shaft. You will have to add weight as you said in the head to get the sw back.
