IPAs, Racer 5 and Ballast Point Sculpin, don't need anything else and to me other breweries get carried away with the hops.
Red ales, Bear republic brewers of Racer 5 makes a red ale that is awesome, Looking for others
Porters, Black Butte Porter, Youngs double chocalate, looking for others.
Pilsners, I have to go with German here, Bitburger, Warsteiner etc.

I see you are in San Diego.

If you are into IPA's, check out Blind Lady Ale House. They are having a 30 days of IPA going on in April and have an IPA challenge. 6 5oz flight of IPA's and if you guess it correctly you win 50 dollar gift card to Blind Lady. I tried it yesterday and my palate was shot.
Checked it out online and will go there tomorrow, thanks for the heads up. Lots of porters too, oh yeah.
Definitely. Check out tiger! Tiger! As well. Owned by the same company and have a great selection as well. Had sculpin IPA on cask tonight.

Deschutes The Abyss Imperial Stout (11% alcohol...ooh baby)
Ninkasi Total Domination IPA

I think you are wrong about the capital, further south.

First link I found:

San Diego takes it. I love Oregon, and I believe you should rep your city, but being an East Coaster who migrated to the West I just don't see anyone rivaling San Diego. I can go to 7-11 and get better beers than most major liquors stores could in other towns. Everytime I turn around there is a new Gastropub/Craft Beer establishment and it is just as good as the rest, and almost all of the beers on tap can be traced back to just a few miles away.

Alesmith, Stone, Ballast Point, Alpine Brewing, Green Flash, Pizza Port, Lost Abbey, and I cold keep going I just think my point has some validity to it.

In addition, any SoCal residents may want to see if they can still find tickets to the City Beat Beer Fest this weekend. One of the best in the area and plenty of boozin' to go around.

It's a fun argument for sure, and one that neither of us is going to win. "Micro brew capital of the world" = Oregon (Portland specifically aka Beervana, Brewtopia, Beertown). Portland has more than five times the number of brew pubs per capita compared to San Diego.

Last I checked, Beer Advocate had Deschutes-The Abyss rated as the #3 beer on the planet....and I would tend to agree. If you ever have the opportunity to snag some, do it.

I will definitely have to check out some of the places you mentioned the next time I am down that way.

I've been on a Red Ale kick, currently drinking Horizon Red Ale by Summit Brewing Co. Really nice, solid ale, though I'm starting to get into the summery Pilsner kind of mood.

I can't seem to get on board with Red Ale's... Last one I had was ehh.

However, I'm trying like you to get into the summer beer mood.. Lighter stuff, pilsners, and lighter body IPA's and such.

I just can't seem to get myself off of big stouts and imperial IPA's.

I've got a Unibrou Grande Reserva 17, 2011 vintage I'm going to chill tomorrow to have with Easter dinner, and pop a KBS or two around the end of the Masters as a celebration.

Dogfish is hands down my favorite beer. Usually 90 minute. I try to get the 120 minute once a year too, if I can find it.
My Beer shop had DFH Tap Take over the other day, was able to get 120 in 2 growlers.....$20 each.
Thats wayyyy too much of that malt bomb 120 for me to enjoy. Wish it was hoppier, and not as sweet, but it's a good 'un to sip. Hope your sharing it, no way I could drink 2 growlers in a week.

Let's just call it the west coast as there's great breweries all up and down the west coast and I'm a big Deschutes fan.

Just got back from Arizona,.. Scottsdale and surrounding area, had some really great beers. Got them at Whole foods, alot of stuff I have never seen before. Went to the Four Peaks brewery a couple of times and reall liked their hop knot IPA. Here in Cali, I have been drinking alot of Sierra Nevada Hoptimum Dog Fish Aprihop, and Victory, hop wallop lately,......man thoes are awesome beers.

Anyone know other beers in that vein that might have slipped by me that I am able to get here in Cali.

Can you get Southern Tier? Their 2XIPA is pretty darn good if you like citrusy IPA's. What about FFF Zombie Dust? Bells Hopslam? Troegs Nugget Nectar?

I've been KILLING the SN Hoptimum. That beer is really, really delicious. Packs a punch, and if you hate IPA's it's the worst beer you've ever had. It's high on my list. I pack 3 of em and go play 9 holes. I'm barely able to putt on #9.

Aprihop is pretty good too, light and citrusy. The 75min IPA from DFH is pretty good if you can still find it. It's limited, but I'm sure there might be some packed away in some hole in the wall store.

The Victory Hop Wallop is pretty good too.. I've been loving Terrapin's Hopzilla DIPA, and Bells Oberon is pretty good on a hot day to cool ya off.

That's awesome! It gets hard to find up here. There was one shop that had 3-4 small bottles of it and I cleaned them out. Never saw it again after that. I think their website also suggested aging it ~5yrs. Would love to taste it after that, but no beer would ever last that long in my house.

Unfortunety I cannot get any Southern Tier here, looked at their website and their stuff looks really good. I cannot get any of the others either. I did get a chance to try the oberon as well as a couple other Bells when I was in Arizona, good stuff. California sucks

Wow, I would love to have a couple of growlers full of Hoptimum. Ever tried Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA ?
I haven't, I don't think they distribute down here. I've heard they have some great stuff though!

The Hoptimum is going down goooood. It's suppose to be easy to find, but that is NOT the case. It's going fast, and a 2nd distribution should be happening soon I heard. It will be around sparse until August, and then it's done.

It's great on draft though, I'm drinking it before I wreck the other 5 bottles left in the fridge!

I would actually say Colorado is the beer capital of the US. Up here in Fort Collins everyone is a drunk haha. I love the store here that delivers.

Favorite breweries are:

New Belgium (they make Fat Tire)
Left Hand (every beer they make is good. probably my favorite brewery)
O'dells (90 shilling is my favorite)
Pateros Creek (they have a great vanilla porter)

Firestone walker is probably my favorite right now, seems every beer in their aresonal is awesome and incredibly drinkable. Also my wife loves Sonoran white chocolate ale, it's good but I can only drink one large bottle before it gets a bit too sweet. We drop a shot of whip cream vodka in there and sip it. Also makes an incredible black n tan when mixed with youngs double chocolate stout.

Righty, you should have gone to total wine, makes whole foods look like a 7-11.

A beer that I had in Chicago was 3 Floyd's, can't wait to go back in June and pound that stuff.

Also, I'm going to go on record and say my favorite beer of all time was cafferys Irish ale, sooooooo mad that you can't get it in the US anymore.

3Floyd's is one of the best breweries in the midwest (if not the US). You should also check out Half Acre, Revolution, Piece, and Flossmoor Station (if you have time to take the train out of the city) while in Chicago. And if you are looking for a good beer bar, the Local Option near Depaul is the best in the city, IMO. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions about the area. I've spent a ton of time in the Windy City and know my way around quite well. Cheers!

Thanks man! My wife is from Chicago and I've been 5 or 6 times now. We stay with her folks out in Algonquin but have friends that live in wicker park so we usually hit up handlebar, goldstar and club foot. Love Chicago.
