MacGregor Mactec NVG2 Hybrid UT

Recommended Posts

Hybrids benefit from Cup Face technology in a big way. They're designed with smaller heads for expanded functionality and CUP FACE 360º makes the entire face the sweet spot. The Proprietary Plasma Welding is completely off the face, enabling maximum rebound properties over a larger hitting area.

* The Fujikura Triple Action Shaft adds more clubhead speed for greater distance

* Patented Tri-Plane sole reduces turf drag at ball impact for more solid contact

* One swing withe NVG2 Hybrid will change the way you think about easy

I have the 20* with a Rifle 5.5 and love it. However, before that I had it with the stock Fujikura shaft in stiff. It played very soft--much softer than the same shaft in the NVG2 3 Wood (which I also play, along with the NVG2 Tour driver), for example, which seems odd. In the graphite, I would need an X shaft (which I don't hit in anything else) or the stiff shaft tipped. But I love it with the Rifle. Great club.

Wouldn't have probably bought a hybrid unless it was part of a promotion that MacGregor was doing. But anyway, got the 2, 17* NVG2 UT as a throw in with the NVG2 Tour driver and man, what a club. The shaft is a little soft (S flex Speeder) compared with the X I have in the driver and irons, and I do notice that it performs better with a smoother swing, but having something to remind me to keep the pace smooth is probably a good thing. It does most of what my 2 iron did, but is probably a little less workable. It is however, MUCH more forgiving and playable from lots of lies. It also does what I expect when I am swinging well, which is NEVER go left unless I ask it to. When I am dialed in on the rest of my shots, that is my way of thinking, and the 2 UT is no different. Very long too, almost too long. I probably hit it between 250 and 270 depending on shot shape and flight, so I might need a bridge to my 3 iron (or maybe the 3 UT! I guess the promotion worked if I am considering buying another!) which I hit about 225. My old 2 iron was dependable for 240-255 when hit well, so the distance improvement is pretty huge.

Anyway, I will be hitting this off tees on short 4's where placement is key and distance is a bad thing, and attacking some long 5's from the fairway with it. Much like I did with the 2 iron, but this will be better from fairway and light rough and easier to hit well on any given shot. I had already taken my 4 wood out of the bag, but it will probably never come back now. Why would I bother with a 3 or 4 wood at this point?

Down the road or over the winter, I may tinker with the shaft (the shop I bought it from said they don't make it in an X?!?!) to further tighten up the dispersion and possibly bring the flight down. It can be pretty high, especially for windy conditions or low escape shots from the woods.

The NVG2 Tour driver is fantastic too, by the way.

i recently purchased a Mactec nvg2 17 degree hybrid with a 6.0 rifle shaft in it , i changed the shaft to a pro force 65 /regular flex and made the shaft length 41 1/2 , the club is very solid , i love the deep face the ball launches high from either the tee or fairway and is really solid from the rough , i was looking for a replacement for a 3 and 5 wood so i could add another wedge and i have defineatly found one in this club ;)

I have both the NVG 2 UT2 & UT3 with the stock stiff quadraflex shafts. However, my 17* UT2 is 42" long and it is a monster off the fairway. I'm just about ready to take my three wood out of the bag as there is only about 10 yards difference between the two. I may even put the new pro launch red fwy shafts in mine to see if it gives a little more boring trajectory as the stock fuji shaft has alot of height to it. The UT3 20* model I don't use near as much as I still like my 3 iron off the tee better and just haven't been in many trouble situations where I needed it...yet. I have two sets of these (long story) and may experiment with one set while leaving the other alone.

I have the UT 4 at 23* and it has been an amazing rescue club. It is an excellent club for the rough and it definitely has a high launch with the stock speeder shaft. Mishits were very acceptable especially those off the heel. The face seemed to scratch quite easily, which was a disappointment for shiny finish it came with. I have since put new long irons in my bag and pulled this hybrid to reshaft it as a 4 iron replacement. I'll edit after a couple rounds with it.

The lofts and lies are the same, the lengths are 1/2" or an inch shorter, can't remember which. I have since reshafted mine with graffalloy and the UT3 is 10-15 yards longer, not sure if the UT2 is longer, but it does have a better trajectory now.

seems the fujikura triple action shaft (made for hybrids and some fw) is a bit softer than the fujikura quadra action shaft which they use in their driver. folks may want to look for an x stiff triple action shaft as they dont come with the quadra action unless you/someone put it in there...
