Played Trophy Club on Tuesday, greens fees are $29. They said the greens fees during April will stay at $29 M-Th and $39 F-Su, bang for the buck you won't find a better deal.

Course is in great shape, especially for this time of year.

LO!! Really there should probably be 50 of these, well maybe 49, Connecticut doesn't really have any great golf or produce an golfers ;)

So I have a question, who has played the French Lick resort and what are your thoughts? Is it worth the price, if I ever find myself in the area?

BTW, hated the result of the Indiana/VCU game, but give IU credit for not giving up. I still think VCU outplayed them, but you are not going to win many tournament games by scoring 4 points over the last 12 minutes. Although I gotta say, I thought Brandenburgs shot was going to go in. That's just the type of ending you expect to see in March!!

Good luck against UK, hope you can beat them again.

CG2, IU hung around long enough to to finally take the lead at the right time. LOL
Haven't played French Lick Dye course...way out of my financial comfort zone for golf. I think I'll play the Fort about 8 or 9 times instead. Although I have played the Ross course but not since the re-do. If you play it, let us know what you think, curious if anyone will post that they have played it??? Anyone???

I live about an hour and a half from French Lick and I played the Ross Course about 6 times last year, and plan on playing it as much as I can this year. I played several of the Ross course in Pinehurst last Sept and would rank French Lick between Pine Needles and Mid Pines. The greens are some of the most wild he ever did. The replay is only $20, so as a non-resort guest you can pretty much play all day for $110, and it is well worth that.

I have not played the Dye, but got to walk it several times while it was being built and have seen it from the club house since it is been finished. I am trying to work out a way to play this summer so IF that happens I will report back.

If you go to the resort and don't want to foot the bill for Dye another good option close is Sultan's Run.

I played the Dye course at French Lick last summer. Payed $350.00 plus the caddie $100. Beautiful and interesting course. Pristine... Great views, lots of
elevation changes, the bunkers are at the top of mogels! I am a senior and played the white tees, about 6200 yards. gold tees are 8100 yards!
My impresion is that it does not get much play. There were only 2 foursomes on the course when we played. Hotel and casino are very nice. I don't plan
on going back.

Paul, you're exactly right IU played well enough to hang around and took advantage of VCU mistakes. I've seen a lot of VCU games this year and was at the CAA tournament, I've never seen them turn the ball over so many times. They cause a lot of TO's but usually don't committ too many. It seemed like everytime they got one they gave it right back.

And I would have bet A LOT of money on Burgess making at least one of those free throws at the end, but to miss both just shocked me.

Although I must say, I'm glad to IU back in the National picture, the sport is a better sport when they are releavant.

Thanks for the post brother!! I am curious about the rates, though. On the website it says noon-noon for $90... So is it 90 before noon or all day or what? Also, is that replay a space available basis? Finally, is the Ross Course comparable to The Fort, Trophy Club, Purgatory, etc and the Indianapolis gems?

Thanks

The times I went last year it was $90 for the first round and then a $20 replay, and yes the replay was based on availability but we never had a problem. In fact every time we were able to walk off #18 and right on to #1. When we paid the replay they said we could play as much as we wanted so we normally got 45 to 54 holes in for a total of $110. Now admittedly that was mid week. Rates go up to $120 (from $90) noon on Friday to noon on Sunday. I think they have a twilight that starts at 4pm.

I personally would rank the Ross Course as the best public in Indiana (remember I have not played the Dye). To give you a perspective I would rank the top 5 publics I have played in Indiana this way:

The Ross
Trophy Club
The Fort
Warren @ Notre Dame
Otter Creek

I am always up for a round at The Ross, so if anyone is visiting and wants a partner let me know.

Played Trophy Club on Tuesday, greens fees are $29. They said the greens fees during April will stay at $29 M-Th and $39 F-Su, bang for the buck you won't find a better deal.

Course is in great shape, especially for this time of year.

HoosierHacker had started a thread about playing Trophy Club July 1, 2112. Anyone interested, the post is on the first page. Maybe HH can re-post on here if he wants.

 • 3 weeks later...

Thanks to a very generous host, I had the opportunity to spend the day at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, IN on Wednesday. If you have not been or seen pictures you should check out their website at www.victorianational.com.

From the moment I pulled into the parking lot I was treated like a member and everyone greeted me with a real smile and good hand shake that made me feel right at home. It is truly a special place and I am very grateful to my host for the opportunity.

The course at Victoria National is a Tom Fazio masterpiece that is routed through a reclaimed coal strip mine. The use of the strip pits (now lakes) and spoils piles to create elevation change and movement is absolutely fantastic. We played from the Chinook tees (73.5/142 6507 yards) and it was the hardest course I have ever played. Victoria is easily the best course I have played in Indiana, and is now in the top 3 of course I have ever played. I personally rank the course this high not because it is so hard; in fact I rank it this way despite the fact that it is hard. While a lot of the difficulty is the visual intimidation, you also have to hit quality shots or you are not going to score well, however even if you shoot a big number you will have a great time doing it. We walked 36 with caddies and the first round I am not sure I broke 100 (I quit keeping score after a 50 on the front). I let the course get the better of me and got a bit rattled after 2 quads. The second round I felt much more comfortable and was able to shoot an 87 which was what my handicap would suggest I should have shot.

If you are ever invited to play at Victoria National do your self a favor a do not pass it up.

Played bear slide last week for $32. That was a tremendous deal. Very impressed with that course, worth the trip, i liked it better than the fort.

Played River Glen in Fishers last night. Always a fun track for a cheap price.

As to French Lick...the Ross course is tremendous. Play it, it's like nothing else, so hard to give a comparison...at least nothing in Indiana.

Felt they were similar courses in quality. I think bear slide had more variety. could just be that I've played the fort many times, but bear slide was new to me.

Overall i think bear slide is probably tougher as well. Much more water, which is non existent at the fort.

I have....they are both really good courses. Bear Slide's front 9 would be more comparable to Trophy Club. The back 9 at Bear Slide has a fair amount of woods and hills with a creek running through it. There's a lot of variation of style there, while Trophy is a much more consistent links look.

Like everything it's personal preference. Bear Slide was in really great shape a few weeks ago when i played it. Didn't notice any brush issues or anything on 15 or anywhere else for that matter.

I'm playing Wood Wind in Westfield next week. Have never played it but it looks pretty nice.

Here's my list of courses I'm planning to play this year

Never played before:

Fox Prairie
Wood Wind
GC of Indiana
West Chase
Plum Creek
Brookshire
Ironwood
Gray Eagle
Pebble Brook

Played before and going back:

Bear Slide
Fort
Trophy Club
River Glen
Purgatory
Brickyard
Prairie View
Coffin
Hawk's Tail
Royal Highlands
Heartland Crossing
Eagle Creek

Am I missing any?? Let me know your thoughts, particularly on the one's I haven't visited yet.

Wow, that's a lotta golf....better get going. And I'm sure I'll have a few other trips to courses a bit further out, like Martinsville CC.

That is a big list, good luck and have fun.

I have been meaning to post about Martinsville for a couple weeks now. I played on a Sunday about 2 weeks ago and it was in really good shape. The greens were running as fast as I have seen in the area. I get up there about every other year and every time I go I am reminded just how good a course it is and that I should come back more often. I love the closing with the stout par 4 15[sup]th[/sup] , then the steep uphill par 5 16[sup]th[/sup], followed by the little par 3 across the ridge line. The 18[sup]th[/sup] is just one of the best par 4's around.

Totally agree. I grew up not far from there and have played it many, many times. Really a beautiful older course.

IU should be good compared to summer time. I worked the Hoosier Invite for the guys about three weeks ago and it was the best I have ever seen it. The women played their invite two weeks ago. They usually it looking good as long as the teams are using it and the students are still here. After that its a toss up. Too many trees to let the grass survive southern indiana summers.

I am playing at the IU course on Sunday, anyone have an update on current course conditions? It's pretty sad that I work right next door and have not been out there in 2 years.
Use to play there. Pretty course, but never in good shape during the summer. There was an article written a couple years back about how the course badly needs a rehab, but there aren't the funds to do it. It's on the very low end for a big ten facility.
