Ping G2 compared to G5 Driver

anyone compare
Just wondering who has compared the G2 to the new G5. I have read all about the weighting differences and the new design of the alignment aid, but was wondering about the overall playing differences. Is the G5 noticeably longer. I have a G2 10 degree and have been thinking about giving a G5 10.5 a shot. Don't want to though if others haven't seen any major differences. My G2 has the prolaunch 65 and i would get the same in a G5 if I decide to. Or i might save the 300 and order my new wedges or try some new hybrids. Already have two quality drivers, not even sure why I'm thinking about it, but I am. Also, anyone other than me like the stock grips better on the G5's compared to the G2's. Can these stock grips can be obtained, I would like to put one on my G2 if I decide to keep it.

I have decided that it would be better if I passed on this for the time being. I can't see the difference being drastic enough to warrant spending 300 on a driver that will probably perform just like my G2. Maybe I'll wait a few months and try to pick up a used one for a good price. Would still like to hear if anyone has compared the two heads up.

I have the G2 NV65 "S" 10°. Been in the bag for 6 months. I hit the G5 NV65 "S" in a 9° and 10.5°, along side my driver on the range. Did not go on the launch monitor to get results. But, I am a good golfer and can pretty much tell what the driver is doing for launch angle, spin rate and distance based on observation (close approximation).

The G2 NV65 "S" 10° and the G5 NV65 "S" in 10.5° have the same launch angle. The G5 spins the ball slightly less than the G2. This is witnessed when I try to draw or fade the ball, especially when I fade the ball I notice less ballooning. When I hit it straight, no effect. The NV shaft behaves the same between the G2 NV65 "S" 10° and the G5 NV65 "S" in 10.5°. Now the big differences I noticed. Even though the G2 NV65 "S" 10° and the G5 NV65 "S" in 10.5 have the same shafts, lengths, and swingweight, the G5 seems statically heavier in the head. I know this don’t make sense or how to explain it for the specs are the same, but it feels different in the hands. The sound and feel is totally different. The G5 feels to me more like a Titleist feel at impact. This really shocked me for I have not read anywhere where the feel and sound are completely different. When I did hit both drivers on the screws, it appeared the G2 was longer.

Overall, G2 and G5 are great drivers. I would not trade my G2 NV65 "S" 10° for a G5 NV65 "S" in a 10.5°. I would purchase the G5 in a 10.5° with a different shaft. Currently looking at the NV75, Comp NT 65, Accra T70 and GD YS7.

I have a G2 10 degree with Diamana 63, and have been playing with it for about 6 months, feels great, sets up great but I thought the spin rate was a bit high. Couple of days ago, I picked up a G5 10.5 and installed the same shaft. What the previous poster said about the weight is true, the G5 heads are a bit heavier, if I remember corectly it was 200 grams vs. 194 grams for the G2.

The feel in the G5 is solid and feels great, not as loud as the G2. In the G5 you can definitely see less spin (not sure if this is good for the average player). The biggest difference, in my opinion, is that the G5 sits a bit toe-in, not much, but noticeable. This was VERY difficult for me to overcome, hence I went back to the G2. Distance wise, I think they're about the same, the G5 gets more roll but the G2 stays in the air longer. Forgiveness, I think the G2 is more forgiving because of more spin it produces (I think the majority of players need the higher spin rate).

jcosjrgolf, I think you did the right thing by keeping the G2. FYI: My SS is 101-104 and index 0.7

I've a conversation w/ the ping tour van guy last monday.

We were discussing some of their new stuff, primarily the G5 driver.

The G5 is around 300-400 mph less on the spin rate, because of this it should effect the loft of the club on lower trajectory. The face of the G5 should be slightly deeper than the G2 and they reposition the internal weighting to achieve all this perfomance.

I've hit a few of them and they are a more solid driver and less chances on ballooning the ball flight.

One thing i can't understand is why they still put that half moon marking on top of the club and have 45 3/4" total lenght. It's just my opinion thought.

Over all they've produced a very good driver this time.

Joe:)

I was going to get a G2 but hit the G5 and it just feels better. I found that it launches higher than a G2 and am going with a 9* stock stiff shaft. It throws the ball up and I need to get something a bit softer to keep my tempo. When I use stiffer shafts, I tend to go after it too much. I used a blue last year and hit a few 290 but it wasn't pretty all the time. I also like the way the stock shaft felt best followed by the NV. I think the NVS would also work well with this head. A 10 G2 hits a little high for me and 10.5 G5 was launching at 15* so the 9 fits me well. I'm 50 and my good tempo is at a bit over 100 MPH but can ramp it up with inconsistant form.
