Level Elbows?

I read in a recent Golf Digest article where the elbows should be level half way back, at the top and at half way in the follow through. Swinging in a mirror it feels/looks like I have a have a flying right elbow when I try and get my elbows level at the top.

 

Am I missing something or am I just really flat?

I had this same exact problem. I had a very flat swing and finally watched myself in the mirror and realized that my right elbow was lower than my left. After raising my right elbow my swing got more upright, butnow I feel like I have a flying right elbow. So it's not just you. Weather or not this is correct or not I have no clue, all I know is that I'm a ton more consistent and a lot straighter too.

I recently noticed this (about myself) after reading an article about the elbows being level and watching myself in the mirror. I knew my swing was flat, but I didn't realize it was THAT flat. Anyway, what I realized I was doing was concentrating on keeping my right elbow tucked into my side, which was keeping it low, which was making me swing around my back like your swing a bat, which was leading to a lot of snap hooks and generally inconsistent shots. I realized that my right hand was really just along for the ride on the back swing.

 

Just recently, I've been concentrating on getting the feeling of my right hand getting involved in lifting the club back to the top of the back swing. This has helped me to get the club more upright, and to let my left wrist set at the top (as opposed to flopping and taking the club way past parallel). Also, in the mirror, I can see that it has gotten my elbows level, since my right elbow is no longer glued to my side -- and it's still pointing DOWN, and not flying out to the side.

 

Furthermore, while looking in the mirror (and getting your right elbow un-glued from your side, but still pointing down), see just how easy it is to get your elbows level by bending more at your hip joints. A little more lean forward, and they'll level right out. (You'll see that your left elbow simply drops a bit more, as oppsed to you having to flap your right elbow up.)
