2012 NXT Tour vs. 2012 ProV1x?

I am a long time ProV1x player that spins the ball a ton and swings 99-106 most of the time. I am thinking about trying the NXT Tour for the lower spin off the driver, lower compression and (surely) longer distance, as my short game does not need a ton of spin either. Has anybody compared the two balls and is able is give some feedback as far as spin on driver and short game, as well as distance gains?

But the NXT Tour will def spin a good bit less off the driver? And all else equal will be longer though correct?

I went to the NXT Tours, and have been happy. I spun the Prov1X too much with short irons. The NXT hits and stops for me, they are long off the tee, they hold their line very well. They have some bite on short pitches, on chips they run out a little. I think its a great ball. For me, they are longer than the Prov1X.

These are really two different category balls. The NXT Tour has much less spin than the ProV1X with the irons. Into a medium firm thin green with a six iron I can keep a Prov1X on - not so with the NXT Tour, it just rolls off the back. Distance is similar with the NXT Tour being a yard or two longer but that's meaningless to me if I can't stay on a green. The latest Golf Digest ball test chart shows NXT Tour at the lower end of spin similar to DT Solo on partial wedge shots where the Prov1X is near the highest (approx 4700 rpm to approx 7100 rpm). The Prov1X however has some of the highest spin with the driver too. That's why I've swiched to using the Z-Star and the Taylor Made TP3 balls. Much less spin with driver and similar spin with short irons - best of both worlds without giving up distance.

Simply, yes, the NXT Tour will spin less with both driver and irons. Even though I am a slow swinger, I tend toward higher spin, and the NXT Tour is one of the best balls for me. Lower spin and longer with the driver; still stops for me on the greens with full iron shots, does roll out a bit with chips and short pitches. I recently tried the Penta TP 5 and am liking it a lot also.

Used an NXT Tour this morning, cool day, course pretty dry but still bare as only April and 5 degrees in North of England. On the plus side the NXT feels very good off driver and irons. It is long and went well into headwinds. However it does not spin very well, except on full shots and definitely cost me a couple of shots when it ran on much further than I expected. It is also a little clicky off the putter (mine is an old mang Anser). All in all a very good ball if you are not relying on your short game.

A little over a year ago I made the switch from NXT Tour (the 2010 version) to DT Solo and my experience was exactly like the article you're quoting (which I have not seen). There was absolutely zero adjustment for my wedge and chipping game inside 100 yards. The DT Solo plays like a lower-compression NXT Tour. I have since played about 12-15 rounds with a ProV1x and that was a major adjustment from the DT Solo.

The only thing a ProV1 and NXT Tour have in common is the name on the logo. The NXT Tour will spin less off the driver, absolutely. Much less. It will also spin much less on every other shot in the bag. That can be a good thing for some folks, not so good for others.

I put a pretty good amount of spin on the ball, and find the ProV1X spins too much for me so I opt for the Penta. As far as the NXT Tour versus the Prov1X, the NXT plays pretty hard (direct comparison of course) and doesnt spin well.

+1 to this. Nxt tour does not spin. I tried it for the same reason as your thinking but its was very poor at best at spinning. Ive been through a few brands in the last 12 months but I'm down to the new Penta tp5 and the Nike 20xi-x. Leaning towards the penta. I'm a high spin player and the penta is perfect for me and is 100% guaranteed longer than any ball Ive ever used. That being said I compared the penta and the Nxt side by side one day and the penta left it for dead. I swing at <95mph with the driver though but 10-20m difference off the tee wasnt uncommon. The new B330's are pretty good too...

Also.. Had a practice with some left over prov1's last week and they are far from what I used to think they were... Average would be a fair estimate. Probably cost me 10-15m off the tee and these are brand new straight out of the box...

  • 1 month later...

Played a couple of rounds this past week with the new NXT Tour. The only difference I noticed from older models is durability. These seem to scuff rather easily especially off older (non-confroming) wedges. There must be other things engineered into the ball, but not noticeable to me. Play to an 11 index with a driver ss around 95.

i'm playing the previous version of the NXT Tour, and went back to them from the FG tours. I don't need the extra spin the typical urethane ball brings around the green, thus the swtich. the NXT tour does everything I want, one bounce and stop on approaches and I like my shots around the green to have a run out instead of checking sometimes unpredictably.

I've played both and because my swing speed is under 100mph, I play the NXT tour. It is much longer off the driver and yet I have notrouble stopping it on the green. I find that it feels just fine off the putter, as well
