2005 Wilson Golf Line

Overall, what do you think?
We were talking about Wilson equipment today at work... about what it used to be like, what it has been like lately and what it is now. I predicted that the Wilson stuff would sell great this year and so far I have been a bit disappointed. It does sell... sort of. I want to write about it on our site but want some comments from all of you. What is working well for them this year? What isn't working well? What have you tried? What do you like? What don't you like?

A few of my thoughts to start it all off... I like thier irons. This has always been their strength and it's nice that they finally lost the whole Fat Shaft idea. I'd give them a B to a B+ here

The balls are ok too although I thought their Wilson Titanium would sell better. That ball was huge for them back in the day and I expected it to pick up where it left off but it hasn't. The Staff balls are decent but it's tough sledding against companies like Titleist and Callaway. I'd say a C here.

Not many of my customers like the Wilson woods and hybrids. The prices are decent but they have a long ways to go to catch up to the pack. Most customers walk straight by the rack. At best a C here too.

Your thoughts?

I used Wilson's when I first started golfing. My first Wilson Set were the '69 Bulletbacks. Followed by '71 Dynapowers and '78 Staff Tour Blades. Between Wilson and Macgregor and Hogan, I don't think there were many better blades in the 70's-early 80's. They totally lost me when they came out with the Fat Shafts. I doesn't seem too long ago when Vijay had the Fat Shaft Wilson bag.

As for today's offering's I was terribly excited when I first saw the designs of the new clubs. It was almost a resurrection sort of thing for the brand. I love the look of their Forged Irons the Fi5. I've just never had the opportunity to hit them. Plus the lack of any solid reviews of them on the golf forums didn't have me running to the Pro Shop. My clubfitter had tried a set of Pi5's and he said they were pretty easy to hit. He also said some of the "oldtimers" who used Wilson's back in the 70's have picked them up and said they were good too. I guess it's only the older guys who remember Wilson as great club makers.

For Wilson to start becoming as popular a club as they used to be, I think it's just a matter of them getting a more charismatic touring Pro then Paddy Harrington. He's a fantastic player, but he's not Sergio or Tiger and doesn't have the commercial appeal that will bring in "golf club groupies".

I think the Fat Shaft era really hurt them. Wilson used to be one of the few remaining "traditional" companies and they had their loyal followers. They tried something new, it really hurt them, and now they are at the bottom of the mountain having to climb up again. I agree... they need a charismatic person on Tour and I think they were hoping that Jesper was going to be that guy. He really hasn't done much lately.

i was very excited when i saw the designs for all the new wilson staff clubs. but as soon as i hit them i was disappointed. they tried to go back to the tradional club with a few modern features but they just didn't get the mix right in my opinion. as pitbull said they really lost alot off there loyal followers when the went modern with the fat shaft clubs. I think they will have trouble trying to get back to being one off the best brands without a a real top player. Well they have Harrington but he just isn't up there week in week out giving them the exposer they need. just my $0.02

I hit the Pi5's yesterday and was pleasantly surprised with the feel. However, from the first time I saw these in stores, it struck me that Wilson missed the boat with an archaic sole design. The line has a VERY sharp traditional leading edge. These scream DIG to me. I would seriously consider the Pi5's if they were to introduce a rolled leading edge ala 690.cb , X-Tours and others.

The Pi5's have one of the smallest soles that I have ever seen. You're right about the digging in thing too. It's not a bad feeling club though. We sell the odd set of Di5's but the game improvement side of things is a tough one to crack right now. They are a decent game improvement iron but not a great one!

In the game improvement sector they have got a lot of stiff compition to head to with. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out for then. I agree the Fat Shaft era my have came back and bit them in the butt when there tradtional customers decided to go elsewhere. I've had a hit with the Pi5's. They weren't to bad to hit but they weren't excatly screaming "buy me, buy me now" And I'm sure the blade on my razor is blunter than the leading edge on them

I dont know if its like this with other territories, but our reps wouldnt even call us back after we faxed them the order. We weren't gonna put them in the store, but they had a demo guy come out to the store and pretty much just stood around b/c no one cared....kinda similar to the MacGregor demo days.....blah blah blah......i love it how customers bug the crap out of you to get these clubs in the store and then they never buy any of it
