The only bag that scares me are the ones with a bumper sticker that state "Guns don't kill people, I do"

Seriously the worn spots are a dead giveaway you have yourself a player amongst the mix.

LOL!! When I was in college I used to play golf at the public course in Salt Lake City. I was paired with this known crazy guy who was actually a good stick when he wasn't too crazy. We had a prolonged wait before we could tee off on this hole quite far from the clubhouse. He pulls a pistol out of his bag and starts shooting at the squrrels! I jumped out of my skin when that gun went off. Needless to say, I didn't finish that well. - Nevin

great thread, enjoyed all the posts.

I'll be scared of the rust mark on the sweet spot on a new JDM blade iron set, meaning he just spent a lot of money on a premium iron set and played so much golf to have a mark on it already.

You guys are insane. The one I'm terrified of is the All-white Taylormade staff bag with all R11s/RBZ Non-TP Woods and R11s irons.
what??

If I see a guy with a all taylormade bag or a all titleist bag that is the guy you want to play, easy money.

Heavy amounts of mizuno, bridgestone, custom ping, adams usually point out a player.

I'm scared of the guy who tees up a blade 2 iron or 3 wood on the first tee. A smart golfer is dangerous...
I'd terrify you then.

I'm not hitting 2 iron cos I'm smart, I'm hitting 2 iron cos I don't want to hit it in that guys pool off to the left of the first hole.

+1 on the browning forged irons.

a younger guy with a belly putter usually throws a mini-flag up also. either they're just being trendy or they put the hours in practicing and putt lights out with it.
old ugly 3 wood with a brand new expensive shaft... only ballers do that.
Wow, I'm a baller and didn't even know it. :) And I thought that most guys just think I'm cheap when they see my old 3 wood and 16 year old PINGs with an R11/Miyazaki shaft.

i usually don't even look at the other guy's bag. Don't know, don't care.

Good thread.

Lots of comments remind me of my buddy's bag...who is real, unassuming, straight up player. He's got the faded, worn, plain stand bag that looks like it sat out directly in the sun for about 50 years. He's got a Titleist 907 driver with the non-matching, old fuzzy Titleist Pro Titanium headcover. Taylormade 200 series 3/5 wood. MP33 blades with dark, dime sized wear spots on the sweet spots. Old school Cleveland 588 black wedges that look like they've been through a meat grinder. Original Odyssey two ball with wear spot on the middle of the face.

And, to boot, one time I had a set of MP32's in the bag and he says...'Oh you got the same irons as me.' I say...'No, you have 33's.' He says...'Oh...really?'

What scares me??? Oh I dunno, maybe reputation. I've played many players, some better than me, some not. But I don't look at clubs (unless they are tour blades), and I observe to see if the guy can hit 'em. Or maybe it's length off tee and follow-up approach. That tells alot. Or chipping game. Or maybe long (10+) putts. That tells me something (like maybe "this F&@#@&'s the real thing"). But mostly I try to play may own game. Stay within myself. And I generally do okay.

I'm still trying to figure out many years/balls it takes to get that brown spot on irons.
Don't get fixated on the brown spots. I am a weekend hacker with some older mizuno irons I bought used that have brown spots.
I have noticed that I get more "respect" until they see my swing!!!

I don't think you can generalize too much. I've learned that great players come in all shapes and sizes and use all types of gear. I know a few guys who finished top 10 in our quebec mid-am this year. 7-8 year old cavity backs and a driver that's a few years old with the stock shaft, another guy has graphite iron shafts and mixed wedges.

I played in the anchor group of an interclub with essentially a full G15 bag save the 60 degree wedge being a vokey.

I have a friend who is a great player who uses X14's and the original burner driver and doesn't own a 3 wood.

you just never really know

When you roll up in a competition, which type of players bag gives you the most concern?

For me its one of the following

1. Pencil bag with 10 year old pings and a beat up 905r or similar. No hybrids and a battered old putter.

2. Blades with a brown spot on the face. The latest driver with a £300 shaft. Wedges with hardly any grooves left.

Both of these give me that "oh sh*t" feeling.

What is it for you?
Why should another players bag be of any concern, I was always under the impression that it is me against the ball-thus in turn against the
course ? Did I miss something ?

I'm scared of the guy who doesnt have a bag, his clubs float and follow him. I'd be scared of that guy, cause he's probably Jesus, or David Copperfield or David Blaine. Either way, they're gonna score probably a 30 for 18 holes.

That's who I'm scared of.

I'm afraid of a guy walking the line at the range before teeing off. That guys just picking his mark.

In all seriousness, anyone with quality older clubs. They've found something that works and stick to it. The other end of the spectrum is someone with a new Scotty, and I'm not knocking the brand or quality, I'm just saying it reeks of someone buying a putting game. The best putters usually have an old stick, or something simple in my experience.

Clubs don't mean anything to me. I'm sure many of people have bought clubs that have been used by 3-4 people before they've even used them to get brown spots. Most guys I play with dont give a crap what you play or even look. I lost a couple C Notes to a guy this summer that played a complete off the shelf Walter Hagan set from Dick's that shot a 68 on a 74/139 course. He was a plus golfer and didnt know what shaft flex he played.

My vote will have to go to my dad's bag. He carries a Callaway FT2- Yes, 2- driver ( I think it was limited edition). He carries an old Orlimar Trimetal 3 wood. Nickent 3DX hybrid with a maxfli head cover. Wilson DI7 irons. One 15 year old vokey. One Macregor wedge he got when he was 10 years old. One tommy armour wedge. And a Wilson 8813 putter than he has used for 30+ years. He hits a 30 yard hook, can get up and down from anywhere, and is the best clutch putter I have ever seen, including pros. Just goes to show: it's the Indian, not the arrow.
