No you don't. Seriously. You don't. The #1 junior in the country doesn't even do that and he's the #1 junior in the country.

Even if you did, which, you don't, you're doing something wrong.

It's obviously changed over the years, but right now I would be scared of a guy playing some older Pings (not necessarily Eye 2's), well used wedges, and an older Taylormade driver. The putter is negotiable. It can be new or used. Doesn't matter. I'll know on by the 3rd tee box if I was just dumb enough to play Ben Crenshaw's long lost brother for money.

Beware of the guy dressed in acceptable but worn golf clothes who offers up advice on how to play the hole on the first tee and knows the starter by name. It goes like this:

Starter: I'm going to pair you up with Ray. He's a good guy and you'll have fun.
Me: Sounds OK to me.
Ray: Nice to meet you. Are you ready to start?
Me: Yeah. I'm ready. You?
Ray: As good as I'm going to get. Thanks for letting me jump in for a quick round John (the starter's name). You have the honors. Be sure to watch out for that tree, creek, bunker, etc. You won't have a good shot at the green.

This scenario has never ended well for my wallet or my ego, but the starter was right. I always had fun!

Haha that's why I asked if he was retired. No way. Tiger & Veejay's worker used to be legendary and they'd hit 800-1000 a day and it would take them like 5-6 hours to do it.

big difference, I hit 100 a day easy. Into a net and inside 50 yards at home BOOOOOOM and im 19. But an 18 year old hittting 500+ is a ridiculous lie. Majority of pros don't even hit 500+ every day.

Brown spots on irons are result of dirt. Practice hard a month in FL and you've got them, any you need not make perfect contact. The dirt just isn't as coarse where I live. I've had my 62's for 5 years and the brown spots only get a lot more defined when I go to FL or somewhere with similar dirt composition.

I would also add:
-$10 3 wood head with $300 shaft
-driver/3 wood with a random headcover from another model

and the biggest one:
-when the guy brings a white locker room towel to every green

500+ a day is just going to tear up your body; it's overkill
it's better to spend the extra 350 on half wedges/pitches/putts

Exactly the most I have ever hit at a range in one day is 2, and by that time I've hit every club for atleast 20 shots and am dying to hit the course. I break down my pratices at home to like 30 minutes at a time, then go watch a show for 30 go hit more etc. etc.

Ok, since you want to be a jackwagon.

1.) I never said the wearspots were in the center of the face. The guy asked how long it took to get a wear spot on an iron. Not a dense, deep one. Just a wear spot.
2.) You wouldn't know. Yes. I do have wear spots on them.
3.) I don't give two sh!ts what the number 1 junior in the nation does.
4.) Just for the sake of it, the number 1 junior in the country has more than one set of irons, probably a gamer set and an identical practice set, like many pros do and like i know the reigning us amateur champion does.
5.) Sorry bucko, but no I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm hitting 500-800 balls a day and generally playing 18-36 holes along with that. Sorry I'm doing something that isn't even a big deal that you can't believe because you're ignorant.
6.) I practice more than the majority of people in this country, including high level college golfers. How do I know? Because I know and have played with a lot of them.

Next?

I play with a couple people described here. One has Hogan Apex with the spots in the center of the clubface, Fairly new shafts, always new grips. Ping Eye2 wedges and an old Anser Putter. He did break down and buy a new driver last year. Second hand of course and rebuilt it.
I've described this guy before. Do NOT play this man for money.

Dudes in this thread are almost as tough as the teenagers in 1998 AOL chat rooms.

Seriously though, 500 balls a day isn't any big deal if you have the time for it. If you don't have a 9-5 job, 500 balls is probably 4-5 hours of your day unless you machine gun on the range.
That's about right. When I was in my teens I worked at a golf course and had free range balls and golf. I generally worked 5am-1pm and then spent several hours in the afternoon on the range and putting greens. I didn't count the balls I hit but I don't think it was unheard of for me to reach 500, however a majority of those would have been wedge shots just because it wears you down to swing driver and long irons that many times. After that I'd be out on the course until the sun went down and then it was not uncommon for a buddy and myself to head over to another range at night that had lights. I did this literally from 14 (our course had a work to play program if you were under the legal working age of 16) until 20... it's probably part of the reason I got so burnt on on the game by my mid 20's but either way it was a nice way to spend my teenage years!

Hitting 500 balls a day is no big deal and it won't injure your body assuming you're a fairly healthy guy to start out with. I regularly hit 4 large baskets 4-5 times per week and I'm 40 years old now. Maybe that's how I got the brown spots on my irons??

I've personally never met anyone that's at or near tour level that didn't beat over 5oo balls per day for multiple years at some point in their lives. Especially if at least half of them are partial wedge shots.

You want to know which guy I'd be leary of to play for money? The 18-20 year old who doesn't have a serious job or a care in the world who has time to hit over 500 balls a day. Especially if I know he's been playing tournament golf for years.....

Good thread.

Lots of comments remind me of my buddy's bag...who is real, unassuming, straight up player. He's got the faded, worn, plain stand bag that looks like it sat out directly in the sun for about 50 years. He's got a Titleist 907 driver with the non-matching, old fuzzy Titleist Pro Titanium headcover. Taylormade 200 series 3/5 wood. MP33 blades with dark, dime sized wear spots on the sweet spots. Old school Cleveland 588 black wedges that look like they've been through a meat grinder. Original Odyssey two ball with wear spot on the middle of the face.

And, to boot, one time I had a set of MP32's in the bag and he says...'Oh you got the same irons as me.' I say...'No, you have 33's.' He says...'Oh...really?'
+1 on this. if they have players clubs and don't even know the model, dude is solid.

also, i agree, the old 3-wood with custom shaft is a pretty good indicator too.
