I am about two hours north of Hollis. Didn't feel anything. Felt like sleeping today though, so probably missed it. Been a lot of birds flying around, and I have had a headache all day...

edit: oh, right. Hollis is about 20 minutes outside Portland...west of.

earthquakes happen every day all over the world. They happen in the northeast all the time just rarely enough on the richter scale to be noticed. We've had them in Montreal many times in my time here. They are obviously a lot more common on the obvious fault lines but they happen everywhere.

Bit of trivia for you. They call it the Richter scale but it was invented by a team, Richter and Gutenberg. Yet no one ever calls it the Gutenberg scale. No one knows why

Richter probably thought Gutenberg had already gotten enough press for his fancy bible so he had him killed and his name removed from all of the documentation.

Haha, that was in my home town. So far my baseball coach from way back in the day and the current high school hockey coach (well, he resigned when the names were posted) are the most notable.

Since we have experienced over 10,000 quakes since our 7.1 in Sept 2010 I read a lot about quakes in the news. As I understand it, your quake is in an area that is very active and quakes are the norm there.
We have come to learn there are several factors that transmit how sever a quake is, but the main one is the depth. The deeper it is the less it is felt. Another interesting thing is each step up the scale the multiplied by 10. That is a 7.1 is 10 times stronger than a 6.1. Two years and some folks still don't have flushing toilets. I'm lucky, I live about 10 miles north of Christchurch so our damage was limited to broken windows, cracked walls and driveways and patios damaged.
