Stretched lettering on the soles of Cleveland wedges. If you've seen them, you know what I'm talking about.
New grips on 10+ year old clubs
An MnBr older Ping putter with the grip wrapped in tennis tape
A 10+ year old 3 wood

Granted all the above could also belong to a cheap hack. The practice green and driving range will tell the rest.
Stage, you just described my bag exactly--right down to the blurred "Cleveland" stamp. Plus I'm still rocking a 15 year old Hoofer, filthy and with a broken zipper no less. Honestly though I don't like playing for money much anymore. These days, standing on the first tee I've got no idea if I'm going to shoot 68 or 81. Not exactly gambling from a position of strength!

Things that make me think twice when I glace at another player for the first time: No range work--the guy who goes from his car to the 1st tee in 60 seconds can play. The guy who doesn't wear a glove can play. Same with the guy who wears two gloves too--shout out to Tommy on his big day, first of many I hope! Chain smokers can play. Anyone who's made the effort to regrip their whole bag with proper full cord or leather grips (NDMC doesn't count, but never bet against anyone who's got a full bag of something like Lamkin Tour Black full cords). A corded putter grip is another giveaway. A non-Scotty grip on a Scotty, or a Scotty grip on a non-Scotty. Anyone with non stock shafts in their irons. Anyone with players CBs that are 10+ years old (e.g., Titleist 990, 962). And anyone who reminds me of Chevy Chase in Caddyshack.

The flip side of the coin......Wager unlimited amounts of money against anyone with iron head covers and/or plumb-bobbers. Same for Judge Smails.

My dads a chain smoker and he sucks ha

Here's mine
The guy that has the slow walk to the first tee, stand bag (hoffer or sunmtn) slung over one shoulder w a hotel towel not connected to the bag thats wound threw his irons. His clubs are the last generation cavity backs irons that look ten years old, current small head driver 440cc (910d3/r11s) and a old 3 wood that you owned four clubs ago that you know he can't part with.
But
The above is all out the window if the longest club in his bag is his putter though. If you carry a long or belly putter in a match w me don't even bother looking for a conceded putt you ain't getting it. That club tells me ur hcp is what it is cause your a lousy putter.
Really? So Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson can't putt huh? Better ring em up and get a money game going
i will admit there ar exceptions to the rule, but for the most part if you see a unconventional putter in a amateurs bag he had conceded that he is a poor putter and will resort to anything to fix it. No one wants to use a long putter, but they do cause they feel they have to.
I only went to the belly to save my back, Im 19 and 6' 4 and using a shorter putter can start to strain the back. But I will also admit I did have the yips for about 3 months then fixed it then switched.

Not gonna lie. In a men's tournament everyone thought I was wasting a lot of my money entering the skins game with the best golfers in the province. They thought I was some teenage poser with blades, a 8802 style putter, and a staff bag. Well I kinda cleaned house and careered on them. Haters are my motivators. I blurred my name to conceal it, but If you don't believe me can happily send you a picture of my Golf Canada card, bag tags, and the uncropped photo.

6200 yards and par 72? Seems really really short. What's the rating/slope on this course?

Nice score, by the way.

My dad told me 50 years ago "Never play anyone for money, you don't know".

If you think that sage advice is too conservative for your blood, you probably deserve what you get. And if you try to draw a conclusion about someone's game by doing some kind of phrenological analysis of their golf bag, I have some farmland in very south Louisiana I'd like to interest you in.

Wow not one par 4 over 400 yards. What a joke of a course. I could shoot 64 there too. Try playing some real 7000+ yard courses.

As a junior I played in a competition against the club president, and he wore a colostomy bag... that was pretty scary.

I agree with the above poster when he mentions players with beat up old irons, but new grips and clean grooves. Anyone with a set of Ping Eye 2s / Zings needs to be given respect.

Great score.

However, I'm not sure I've EVER played a golf course in my life that didnt have a par 4 over 400 yards. Our club championship was played on 7100 yds. I'm not trying to downplay anyones score on here...but many many golfers put wayyyyyyy too much on just a score rather than how that works out relative to slope & distance.

The plain white towel wrapped through the clubs that the guy takes to every green reminds me of a friend of mine. He looked the part. Talked the part. Once made a bet on the 1st tee box and by #3 had pulled a checkbook out and wrote a $500 check because there wasn't any way he was overcoming the double-double start.

a checkbook??? Better bring some greenbacks next time...straight cash homie!

On the flip side of this discussion...I would ALWAYS bet a guy that carried a checkbook in his golf bag.

Ha ha. You're right. It was amongst friends and I believe the check writer thought the payee would rip it up immediately. He didn't. He cashed it the next day. It was several years ago when we had just graduated and that amount of money might as well have been $10,000.

They used a mixture of blue and gold, but put blue yardages on the card. The rating and slope for the blue tees is 72.8/127.

Likewise, a lot of people put too much emphasis on distance. The kid was 11 under for a 14 hole stretch - I don't care where you're playing, that's good.

A lot of long courses take a ton of thinking out of the game - just pull driver on every hole and you're done with it. I play some courses that are around 6300 yards that absolutely beat the crap out of you.

I think there is some diminishing returns associated with distance. I play a course that is 75.1 CR from the back (7200) and ~72 from 6700. It is much easier to shoot at or slightly below that course rating from the back than from 6700. However, I think you are correct that to go 6+ shots below the course rating is harder and more impressive from the back. A few birdie holes turn into save par holes when they go from 430 yards to 480 yard par 4's. Par 3's go from 180 to 210 yards it just makes birdies scarce. for me anyways.

Hard to explain I hope someone gets what I am saying. Making pars is much easier than making a lot of birdies. And as far as birdies go you either make them or you don't. 64 is a great of a score from 6200 yards for anyone.

Yeah, but many many many golfers put wayyyyyy too much on slope and distance rather than score. A 64 is a 64. I don't care if that means he was only a +5 or so that day or whatever (just guessing what a course of that distance might be rated), but it takes some serious stuff to move it around a course in 8 under par. Not to pick on you, but you're a 1.9 handicap - go play your local pitch and putt short course and tell me if you get it to -8, or even close for that matter. I'm not trying to be snide...actually serious here.

I don't care how easy the course is, 64 is legit, and those criticizing are probably just jealous that they can't match it. I know I am.

e.g. NICE SHOOTING!
I shot a 66 at Blufton Golf Club in Blufton, Ohio 3 weeks ago @ 6300 yards which was a 125 slope rating (i think). It was the first time I even played it. I dont even add those to my USGA. I didnt play as well when I shot a 75 at my home course which is 7100 and 141 slope, where 64 is the course recond score by a US Open winning PGA professional.

I'm sorry all 64's arent created equal, not even close. I prefaced my comment by saying Great Score. But when you brag about a 64 and cleaning house on a course that short, don't be surprised if you get criticism...which happend by more people than just myself.
