Hunter Mahan closest thing to modern hogan?

Recommended Posts

On top, with a driver, his shoulders looks flatter than usual because the R shoulder dips down. This is because in a driver, he pulls back the R foot into a closed stance. Pulling back the R foot makes the R shoulder turn lower. But notice his L shoulder, it goes down and under the chin. And look at the impact zone. His R shoulder is really going down way under the chin, and his L shoulder is really going up.

By contemporary writers, I meant contemporary to Hogan. Al Barkow, H.W. Wind, and so on. As for complicated-rolling the club back to a wide open, cupped wrist position, reversing the process to a bowed wrist at impact-that's complicated.
Everyone has to open up to a degree - at least if they want to keep the club on a somewhat normal plane. Cupping isn't really complicated and is probably a more natural result of opening up the arms than trying to keep a "flat" wrist. The reversal on the way down just happens. Groove a takeway and a pivot. Pretty simple IMO

I think Hogan's swing is more upright than many of us thinks, but it is not an upright swing that is arm oriented. It is an upright swing that is shoulder or upper center oriented...just like Iron Byron...lol
What is the deal with us agreeing lately - creeps me out. I just wouldn't say upright though. His arms don't break from the plane his shoulders are on, so it looks flat, but that right shoulder comes down through impact normally.

Woodland, pre-Butch, was pretty darn close.

Mahan is probably the best, in my mind, now.

Hogan's club at USGA house........one iron / two iron whatever you want to call it......measuring somewhere around 21 degrees loft based on lofts of the day for those clubs.....for those that guess about Hogan's equipment this is about as exact a reference we can get to see how they were set up. The club is sitting flush on a table so we can get a real good reading on it......and the lie angle is 51 degrees

What loft of todays clubs are 21 degrees?....3 iron?.....probably......what is the standard lie angle of lets say a Titleist or Taylor Mairon....59 degrees?
So Hogan used a club of similar length and loft to today's 59 degree 3 iron club and yet he had his set up at 51 degrees....a difference of 8 degrees....THEN add the fact that club fitters want to poke everyone into even more upright golf clubs than that....we have a golf

population using clubs of similar loft and length with a 8-12 degrees lie angle difference.......a massive reason why no-one comes very close to Hogan's action

A flatter club helps promote a shallow more around motion where the club stays behind us and comes into impact and exits impact around also.......the more rotary motion puts circular forces in our feet so we can also utilize the ground better with our feet ...(or we need to if we want to stay in balance)....Hogan had an extra spike....no wonder
The more upright golf swing is more arm orientated and the pressures in our feet are more back and forth swaying and less connected......so we don't tend to utilize the ground as well when we swing.....so we become steeper....more armsy...and then more handsy because we aren't harnessing opposing forces in the ground to be able to pivot properly against..... like wringing a wet towel on either end from our feet to our core and keeping all the pressures within

Makes a difference.....

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the 51 deg . Jeff Martin actually got the correct measurements and hogans 2 iron was 56 deg lie angle 21 deg loft , so in comparison that's a 3 iron say mizuno set at 59 deg lie angle . Another myth busted about hogans clubs was the weight .
In hogans 53 playing set the 1 iron was 54.6 deg lie angle

8iron did you read what Richie3 wrote about those clubs....and how the effective lie based on length etc..... that shows the long irons to be 6 flat..mid irons 4-5 flat and short irons 3-4 flat
The weight is very inconclusive.....swingweight is an entirely different beast to overall weight

I will post this equipment spec of drivers of PGA players (I think this is from late 60's).....everyone had drivers in the D3-D7 mark...and an overall weight is shown on a few of the specs....there is a lot more to it...hosel length of irons, grips. even things such as shaft torque etc, stiffness that all add to the complexity of the setup.

David Frost told me Hogan's clubs were ridiculous flat and heavy. Tom Wishon said the same. So did Faldo. Kris Tschetter said the same and that the USGA had measured Hogan's driver and it was the heaviest they had measured. So who do we trust? I know who my money is on.....and btw who uses a Golfsmith measuring device? Mitchell or nothing ....too much descrepency in the previous brand.

In all honesty I don't know why the USGA have never run proper tests...seeing all the interest....just shows how slack they are in many areas.

Yep I read his post , don't agree with it entirely, the maths is off .The facts are the lie angles were measured and they are what they are . Hard to bang a square peg in a round hole , but I'm sure someone will. True the overall weight has not been determined , but Jeff Martin , didn't think the drivers were that heavy , he said he will follow it up though

Haven't checked Tschetter's book in a while, but she said the total weight-heavy Driver of Hogan is used by Hogan as a practice device to increase swing speed. Hogan always had a laugh when people try that specific Driver. Is my recollection correct? Maybe someone with the book now can double check.

Looks like he liked some heavy wedges, at least later in age:

my dad just pulled a old set of blades out from around 50 years ago. The 2 iron sits almost exactly as flat as my 7.5 degree flat (off industry standard) 4 iron. the old blade was bought off the rack! it's stupid flat. We were both surprised by that...
Stupid flat to us, standard for greats of the past who had their clubs made by golfers and craftsmen instead of scientists with a computer and a wind tunnel.

As for a modern day Hogan, how has no one mentioned Sergio!?!

One thing I like about Mahan is how his pre-shot routine is textbook to what every instructor I have ever seen teaches. I also appreciate how his swing is textbook in every way. He may not have the wild fade/draw/ distance of Bubba or DJ, but doesn't have the crazy moves outside his frame (Bubba) or double-jointed wrists (DJ). He does have a very consultant swing and consistent game though.
