Agree with many here that the specifics of the shot dictate my club choice

^^^this. Completely depends on the lie and pin placement

For me, it depends on the chip to run ratio. I've used as low as a 7 iron before on a long green from a lie I don't want to putt from, but I have to really dial back the swing because I run the risk of zooming past the hole on the roll. In most cases, I use my 52*. If I do use a PW, 9, 8, or 7 iron, I use a putter style grip and just baby it up there. Works quite well actually, but it's really a touch/feel shot. So much depends on the lie and the contour of the green.

I choke way down on a 7 iron and use a putter stroke - it's definately a "go to" shot...
This, if the hole is on the back 1/2 of the green. Front 1/2 it's an 8i or 9i depending on what I have to get over.

Using the 7i consistantly has lowered my scores quite a bit.

7 or 8 iron. If I want all roll I use a 7.

I'm talking about chip shots within 5 yards of the green, where you are expecting some run out.

I've used the 47* pw for a few months, with some success. On a level green, it's about a 1:2 carry to roll ratio.

What club do you use for this shot?

Usually the PW, may be my 54*

It depends on what your run out ratio is.

I use a PW for a 1:1 air to roll ratio.

9 iron for a 1:2

8 iron for a 1:3

I will use less loft on an uphill runout so if I have a 1:1 ratio I will use a 9 iron instead of a PW.
How does this work for you? Consistant? ANd the ratio, is that distancetolanding:rollout?

Never saw it like that before but chipping is something that I really need work on, and that's fairly easy to remember. How far back do you bring the club when making the stroke?

What you need to do is to see how much roll out you get on your clubs when it lands on the green.

For a 1:1 ratio or air to roll which means that if you hit the ball 10 feet it would then roll 10 feet after it lands.

a 1:2 ratio would go 10 feet in the air and then roll 20 feet, etc.

You have to see what works for you some people a 1:1 ratio might be a sand wedge and others it might be a PW.

Also everyone plays on different greens so a course with faster greens might give you more roll out.

Then when you have that figured out you have to account for an uphill or a downhill or a sidehill green.

On an uphill green if you normally have a 1:1 ratio and use a SW then use a PW as that will give you the 1:2 ratio.

On a downhill it is the reverse you use the more lofted club.

Also I have found that on a sidehill green you need to play more break because if you are too low the ball will run away from you.

Hope this helps.

After all this then you can work on opening the clubface at the finish to make it check up earlier or closing it to make it run but just try to keep it simple at first.

Also a firmer grip will make it run more and a softer grip will make it stop and check easier.

Good luck and practice!

pw or nine iron hooded down for longer chips, opened up a touch for shorter chips.

With all things being straight and level, my gap wedge (54) is my 1/2 carry, 1/2 roll club.
9-iron (44*) is 1/3 carry, 2/3 roll
7-iron (36*) is 1/4 carry, 3/4 roll
This, although my lofts are 34*, 42*, 52*. Of the three, the 9i gets the most frequent use.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

If you truly need to bump it before the green then start with the least loft and ask yourself if that club will work. Putter then hybrid then mid iron then short iron then lofted wedge. On this type of shot the more running and the less bumping the better.

As mentioned it depends but for me I will more than likely use my 52* on shots I want to roll out. Usually get a little check then roll. If all I want is roll, hopefully I can use the putter, otherwise it's 8-pw depending on distance.

Totally depends on how long the shot is, the lie and the speed of the greens.

I use 8 and 9 iron quite a bit. I will use my 53 degree wedge with my hands pressed forward. If it's really long, I will use 7 iron.

I am a big believer that there is no 'one size fits all' on shots around the green. Too many variables.
