The NFL Meets the Rules of Golf

I'm waiting to hear the explanation for how they will fine Suh for kicking Schaub in the jewels. Legal play, wasn't intentional (perfect, no look shot while rolling over another lineman), but I'm sure that based on his reputation, he'll get a call from the league offices....

Week 6 last season Schwartz caught on tape yelling "know the rules Harbaugh" when Jim Harbaugh threw a challenge flag on a TD. This is no ones fault but Schwartz. The rule was put in place because coaches were throwing challenge flags to chat up officials on non challenge able plays as a quasi delay of game penalty.

Is it dumb sure but not as dumb as the coach knowing the rule then throwing the flag anyways costing his team a td and a game.

That looked intentional. When I'm falling, I don't naturally throw my leg out like that.
Have to disagree...the way he's falling and rolling at the same time (with a lineman who is flipping him over at the same time), his leg is bent ready for that knee to hit the ground so he can get up quick. Only Schaub's crotch gets in the way. Suh's foot recoils after that contact, so it looks like a kick, but I don't think it was.

That said, it doesn't matter what I think. The NFL will fine him for sure, just because of the name on his jersey, and how it looks.

Given what a clown Schwartz is, this doesn't break my heart. But, the rule is pretty silly. To their credit, the NFL is reviewing the rule and will hopefully modify it rather quickly. My favorite part of this story, is last year when Harbagh did the same thing (throwing a challenge flag illegally after a score) Schwartz yelled at him, "Know the rules Harbaugh". Don't ever change Schwartz.

18 years ago when my son was born, I laid him on my chest at the start of the football season and explained to him that we are Spartan and Lions fans, and this is our family curse. He's now at MSU himself and recently texted me from the game to say "I didn't sign up for this chyte!". I replied "Why yes, yes you did" Arrrggghhh

I'm right there with you..... I've got a degree from state. The worst thing is that we had such high hopes this year and now we're playing a must win game to get a bowl invite. At least most of the years I went there we just expected to lose and hoped for upsets.

And IF we beat MN, we might get an invite to the Little Ceasers Bowl or something equally weak. The only saving grace is we have a lot of juniors on the team. It seemed that Maxwell improved as the year went on. Hopefully next year will be better. Hmmm, seems I've said that before ;-)

Now the question is, in the future will a coach in the Houston position simply throw the red flag to block a review of a touchdown when he expects his touchdown to be reversed?

Minnesota just had a chance to try it in their game today against Chicago. Forte appeared to fumble the ball while in a huge pile up -- refs let it go and Minnesota picked up the ball and ran it into the endzone. Ruling on the field was a TD. Minnesota should have spent a 15 yard penalty and loss of TO to 'lock in' the TD as above. Especially since after about 20 replays, it was determined Forte was down before the fumble. It could have been a 10 point swing, too. Chicago got a field goal on the drive to make it 28-10 with about 6 mins left in the 3rd qtr. If Minnesota locks in the TD, it would have been 17-25. Totally worth a 15 yard penalty in my mind.

FWIW similar play today in the SF vs NO game Crabtree was ruled down when in fact he was not. Because the refs blew it dead the play was not challenge-able. Refs should let the play finish out I would rather see a play challenged and reversed than incorrectly blown dead

Yeah, between slow motion cams, 100 angles, and endless opportunities for replay (official or not), the game's getting hard to watch. I saw several non calls in that Saints game that were mind blowing, from Moss tackling a DB going for the ball, to some blatent pass interference on others. The thing I have to keep telling myself is that when they take an angle opposite the official and slow it down, you're bound to see things they didn't. I almost wish it was the good old days with just a few cameras and no opportunities for everything. Well that, and less guys calling the games who just love to point out how much they know and how every call is a travesty.

That no call on Moss was pretty bad even as a 49ers fan, Even if it would have been called it was still a good play by him to save the int

My guess is the league sent out a message to all the teams instructing them to not even think about it!!!

IIRC the rules state you "can not benefit" from a review, not that it stops the review from taking place.
You beat me to it...all of those suggesting Houston or Minnesota could have "locked" in the touchdown by throwing a challenge flag are not correct. A team cannot BENEFIT from a challenge after illegally throwing a challenge flag.

So when are we going to give pro golf players a flag to throw for review? How about one flag per player to throw against an opponent. The opponent must then re-take the shot.
The last thing they want to do is take longer to complete the round.....Plus then we'd have to read all about tour issue flags, whether or not they fly better, etc
