Depends if you prefer 90s and humid or 115 searing dry heat.

Orlando has more varied terrain for golf courses in general but I prefer PHX/Scottsdale, but that's just me. I also prefer to retrieve my balls from a waters edge without the thought of a 2 ton gator snapping my arm off or whispering sweet nothing's in my ear.

Orlando golf conditions vary with the weather. A rare cold winter means crappy turf come summer. Rainy weather means excellent turf growth and coverage but soggy conditions.

In terms of pricing there's no better deals to be had then late summer twilight pricing in Orlando. I used to have a hard time picking where I wanted to go because a lot of top tier courses were under $30 to play. The winter pricing on the other hand, gets a little out of control. Courses that were 50 in the morning sky rocket to 125, so you end up branching to lower tier courses or traveling a bit for good deals.

Orlando is also in the middle of the state so you have a lot of options if you want to go away over the weekend to a golfing spot like Jacksonville, Tampa, Naples, So Fla and the Panhandle.

For playability, the only time I stay in is when 50's the high for the day so maybe a few weekends in Jan/Feb.

I've never been to Arizona so can't help with a contrast.

As someone mentioned, it's really a personal choice as to whether 95 and humid versus 115 and scorching and moderately humid. As my sister says (she lives in Scottsdale and works in Phoenix), nobody who is anybody stays in Phoenix in August. it's rainy and super super hot.

From an overall Golf point of view, Orlando gives a better overall selection. If you don't like Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Naples, tampa, Brooksville are all not that far. Within a 2.5 hour drive are probably well over 500 courses. If you can't find something you like with that selection, then you're pretty picky. I live near Tampa and they say that there are over 350 courses within 1.5 hours drive (they call that the Metro area).

Phoenix has a lot of excellent courses. No one can argue with that. Totally different conditions, environment.

So I'd say other factors should probably be the deciding factors rather than courses.

I love desert golf - so I am going with Scottsdale. There is a real good variety of golf there from high end at Troon to great deals at Viste Verde. There are many courses to choose from in that small area. The restaurants are nicer there as well.

Having played both, the golf and the area is nicer in Scottsdale for me. The FL courses (i've only played Tampa, Orlando West Palm and Naples - so maybe its different in other parts of FL) don;t do anything for me, I'd pick a few other warm locations before I played FL.

The great thing about orlando is there are things outside of golf to do, Beaches, Amusement Parks, Casinos, etc
[/quote]

What beach is in Orlando?

Scottsdale / Phoenix knocks the socks off of Orlando for golf, for restaurants, for nightlife, and sports. One of damn few cities that have NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB teams. Plus spring training and major college football. ASU, Fiesta Bowl, BCS bowl.

i've vacationed in both, golfed in both. florida at the end of may, phoenix at the end of august. i liked everything about phoenix better. the landscape, the golf, restaurants, etc. i didn't really play as much good golf in orlando - orange county national, the mariott resort course (pines?), and sugarloaf. played both faldo and palmer wildfire courses, eagle mountain, and troon in phoenix.

clearly you've never been in Phoenix in August. It is not close to "moderately humid" and almost never rains

I would take the weather in PHX vs ORL all day long and think PHX has a better overall selection and variety of courses to play, however you will pay a price for that late December through May. With that said if you make a few connections and learn to scour websites for deals and maybe willing to drive a bit more golf becomes much cheaper in PHX.

I’ve avoided this thread for the last two weeks as I don’t live in either ORL or PHX, and can’t opine on overall lifestyle. However, I’ve visited ORL 20 times and PHX more than a dozen. Some of information posted so far is wrong, and it is not fair to say that “it is no contest” as to one being better than the other. They are just different from each other not better and worse. Here are my two cents.

1. Climate - I’ve baked in in the 110 degree heat of PHX and boiled in 99 degree 100 humidity of ORL. They are both terrible. Don’t tell me PHX is not bad because it’s “dry heat” trust me it’s bad and no human being should be living in the desert in summer. Of course winters in both places are fantastic. In the shoulder season Florida has hurricanes although being inland, ORL is rarely hit hard. PHX has the occasional dust storm. So how do you rate places that get an “A+” half the year and an “F” half the year. The smart people are snow birds and stay in the north during summer.

2. Quantity of Golf – Both locales have more than enough public and private courses to entertain you for the rest of your life. Here, they both get an “A”

3. Quality of Golf – Of course this is a personal choice… some players don’t like desert style golf and others don’t like Florida style golf. Although the abundance of water hazards on typical Florida courses is a turn off for me, the overall quality of golf in the ORL is pretty good and will satisfy 90 percent of the golfing public despite the opposite view taken by many golf architecture geeks. The same is true for PHX, just change “water hazards” for “chasing a ball through desert waste areas”. If you compare the top public courses against each other it is still a close call, especially if you expand the ORL radius a little to include Streamsong and World Woods. In addition to those, you have Bay Hill, Mission Inn, Deltona, Southern Dunes etc. (Funny how each place has a “Southern Dunes” among its top 10 public courses IMO) After that the courses do get a bit repetitive and there is a sense of déjà vu. However, PHX is the same. I love Vista Verde, We-Ko-Pa, Southern Dunes, Troon, the Boulders etc. but again, after my top 10 or 20 the rest are pretty similar… Good but not necessarily outstanding. It comes down to Eagle Mountain vs. Eagle Creek; Orange Tree vs. Orange Lake; Palms at Palm Valley vs. Palm at Disney; Aguila vs. Alacua etc. There is not a huge difference and even the names are the same. Even in high end private clubs, both locales have the big name places where the pros are members. Choose between Lake Nona and Isleworth vs. Whisper Rock and Estanica.

4. Cost of Golf – Here too, both locales offer an extremely wide range. The suggestion that someone posted above that PHX is less expensive than ORL is wrong, especially if you are a Florida resident. Once you get a little distance from the theme parks and the big name courses, there are plenty of low cost golf options. At Disney, when the rack rate is $149 for out of staters, the rate for Florida residents is $49 (and less at twilight. Many, if not most courses have lower rates for residents. Even at $149, that is cheap compared to the Troon North rack rate at high season. Golf Now and other on-line sites offer great deals in both PHX and ORL, so again, for a resident of either place, there is not a lot that separates the two with respect to cost of play.

5. Eye Candy – The scenery around PHX is to die for. ORL can’t compare to the beauty of the natural surroundings of AZ

6.Other activities – These are two cities that have pro sports, lots of restaurants and plenty of choices for activities. PHX offers the desert and mountains if you are an outdoors person, but 45 minutes from ORL you have the Ocean to the East or the Gulf to the West with all the fishing, boating and beach activities that PHX can’t provide. The biggest difference is the theme parks. If you are retiring and have grandchildren, there is nothing in PHX that compares to WDW, Universal or SeaWorld.

For me personally, I cannot take high humidity very well, so any part of FL is not likely to ever get on my destination list.

That and I'm a desert/low rainfall kinda guy. When playing for fun, rain doesn't fit within the definition of.

Remember that in Phoenix summers, you'll be teeing off early and getting off the course early , before you ever reach the high temp of the day at 2 pm.

I'm usually done my round at 9:30 am when the temp is no higher than. 95 deg. I grab a beer as I float in my pool from 11am-evening.

Rain delay??? Wth is that?

I've been to Orlando in late May and the sauna outside with 90% humidity is for the birds.

when i was in phoenix at the end of august (2 years ago) it was dirty hot, and all the locals were complaining about it. well...we had temps only about 5deg cooler in KS but had high humidity too....i actually thought it was pretty pleasant to play (we finished all rounds before noon). then as mentioned, we sat at the pool and drank the afternoon away.

pretty nice little vacation.

Played in Scottsdale a few years back, loved it. Even though it was 100+ it was comfortable since it was dry heat.
Played in Tampa last year, very humid and we got rained out on the 14th hole, just after we couldn't get a refund. Greens flooding and everything.

Both Cities/States have some great golf though, you won't be disappointed which ever place you choose. I'd take Arizona though.
