Like Hank Haney (who? You many ask.) Trying to launch his fine literary debut to coincide with the Masters.

The media is for you when you're killing it, against you when you're a bum and in between, they are just general scavengers.

It would be expected for them to report and scrounge for anything that would get interest.

Maybe they are miffed at TW and not getting the scoop about his bootyism for so long.

Anyway, par for the course, Tiger is a big shot, "public property", he can handle it.

It's not a conspiracy, it's the way media works. If you don't know, the whole point of media is to maximize exposure which in turn maximizes revenue from advertising, which can be commercials, ad clicks, etc.

Now to maximize exposure, would you run a story on an off week or when the player/person/target is doing something, like playing in a tourney, that will increase people's desire to see the information?

Of course Tiger has been a big target for a long time. Anyone who is popular is, especially when they do something outrageous. It's his burden now, although I can pretty much guarantee that he sees little to none of the coverage.

The only Tiger sabotage going on is what he created for himself when he started "putting it about". Up until then his personal life was just that, personal... ever since it has been out in the open (and continues to be) he can't seem to handle it and his results have suffered. He has no-one to blame but himself.
I realize that he created his own mess. This thread is not about that. This is about the timing of the stories in the media to do maximum damage to his play. One would have had to have their head in the sand to not see the stories that hit last week.
My point is that if he hadn't been a naughty boy, they wouldn't have the ammunition to print such stories. Before 2009 no-one knew that much about his personal life, and the stories printed were 99.9% about golf. When he took the conscious decision to become a man-slut, and subsequently tried to buy his ex-wife's affections back, you cannot blame the media for reporting on it, as based on his recent track record, it is rather newsworthy.
His issues with the media go back to 1997. And take a look at 2006 Ryder Cup as an example of obnoxious media behavior. I don't agree 100% with the OP, but the Tiger / Vonn stories and the Tiger / Elin stuff coming out as he starts his season isn't just a coincidence.

Well googled. I'm sure you can find a Tiger story from every day over the last 4 years if you wanted to... it doesn't mean they are all true though. You do realise that journalists don't store all Tiger stories in a jar, and pick one out on the Wednesday before a tournament, don't you? An internet blog isn't really the same as a front page story in a newspaper, or a piece on a more reputable website.
Journalists sit on stories all of the time. I'm not saying they do that with only Tiger, but it happens in all sports. It helps sell newspapers and sell magazines if a story is released at the right time.

The Media is responsible for the 160 yard drive!

Traj-ic. What will Tiger do? He can't land his jet anywhere for a "matinee" between 7 figure appearance fees without press operatives shadowing him.

True but the mainstream media including CNN , Fox and NBC all ran with that story.

Well, it's either that or "Tiger Misses Cut After Taking Multi-Million Dollar Appearance Fee!"
Pick your poison.
If he'd shot a 62 and ended up winning, they'd have run with that one.
All this tells us, is that it was a slow news week.

Besides, what happened to the MYTH that Tiger doesn't read what they write about him?

The Enquirer story came out before the start of the tournament and he was asked about it after the first round.
I'm not sure about what myth you're talking about. It has always been said that Tiger reads everything about him and that he has a long memory.

The National Enquirer has been pushing this theory about Tiger wanting Elin back for years. They ran a similar story the week of the US Open but, it didn't go mainstream like it did this week. I do find it suspicious that suddenly everyone in the media is reporting on this story by the Enquirer instead of the Lindsey Vonn story which is more plausible.

Damn media...

No question its hurting his game. If he fails to play well this year we'll know who is at fault.

If he does not win, I shall hold

The media, the clubs, the stone handed Pats receivers from the last Superbowl, global warming, Obama-care

Responsible.

If not for them, Tiger Woods would win 5 majors this year!

If you guys think that the media doesn't take into account the timing of their subject matter, you are mistaken.

That's one of the key elements to the publication of an article and they teach this in J school. The timeliness and it's relevance is a big factor in when articles come out.

You can slam the media all you want, but the reality is that the theory works in many cases, and is the reason they are successful.

Criticize the Enquirer too, but weren't they the ones who broke the original TW story?

Journalists are taught to bring time and subject relevant stories to the public, both relevant in interest level, and what the editors deem to be important for the public to know. Some organizations tend to side with one aspect of that over the other. Some editors sit on stories longer than their reporters want them to. There isn't a lot of power given to a reporter, but their bylines are on stories and they generally take the heat for it later.
