I'm going to be heading to north myrtle beach,sc with my family April 1st -7. I have never been before, so I need some help on deciding on which courses to play. We are going to be stay at the atlantica resort, there will be three of us playing, so if someone will be there and wants to play pm me. I will be able to play five days and would like to hit up some nice courses close to the resort in north myrtle

Please help me decide where to play

I personally love Crow Creek which is just across the state line in calabash. I haven't played there in over a year but I've never seen it in bad shape. Take 17 into N.C. and it's probably 1.5 to 2 miles on the left once you cross the state line. Farmstead is another good one not far from there. Turn left at the light where Food Lion is about 1 mile from the line. You pass Meadowlands and come to a stop sign. Turn left and you see it as you get on that road. Farmstead has a par 6 finishing hole that tees off in S.C. and finishes in N.C. The Thistle has 3 9nines and is pretty nice. Calabash also has The Pearl near The Thistle. There are the "Cat" courses on up past Crow Creek but I've never played those. Lots of good courses up in N.C. just past the line.

As far as ones in North Myrtle, The courses at Barefoot are popular. Three courses from Dye, Love III and Norman (I think). I've played Love and Dye and they were nice. I've played alot down that way but really can't think of them and most are down in South Myrtle up hwy 501 that I've played.

My Aunt and Uncle live in Calabash so I play those more when I'm down there. I'd make sure to call the course to see if they punched their greens... most punch in the winter but you never know

A few years ago me and a buddy decided to play Tiger's Eye on a weekend trip. When we got to the 1st green, we were shocked. It was absolutely the worst green I've EVER seen. The whole course was like that. I mean.. some greens would have areas 20ft wide with hardly a blade of grass. Imagine tilling up your back yard and trying to turn it in to a putting green in 1 day (without sod). You would have about the same results.

I complained in the Pro Shop that they should have informed us over the phone or offered a discounted rate.

When you book your tee times, ask very specific questions about the course conditions.

I also like Barefoot. We took an 8 man trip there last year (5 rounds, 3 days) and are doing the same this year.

You have to play at Barefoot! You get what you pay for that time of the year but the Barefoot courses are worth every penny. The Love, Fazio and Dye courses are the ones I have played and they are awesome. Tidewater is good and also just across the border in North Carolina is the Thistle. That is the 5 I would play.

Lots of GREAT courses up north. My favorite is Tidewater. Some of the Cats courses are also really good - I've only played Tiger's Eye and Leopard's Chase, but recommend them. Oyster Bay is spectacular. River's Edge is a beautiful course. And Glen Dornoch has the 3 toughest finishing holes of any course I've played.

All nice layouts that I highly recommend.

I'm in the minority on the Barefoot courses. They're nice, but I don't find them to be particularly good value. My 2 cents.

Grande Dunes is also a fantastic course.

Going that same week with my family.......hope we have great weather!!!!

Courses I loved & would gladly play again (no particular order):
1) Grande Dunes
2) Long Bay
3) Glen Dornach
4) Heather Glen
5) Possum Trot (much better since the Glen's Group took it over)
6) Aberdeen
7) Tidewater

Haven't played but never heard a discouraging word about

Barefoot (any), Farmstead, Dunes.

Lots of great courses off of 501 (~30 minutes) Legends, MB Nat'l and Wild Wing Avocet all worth the ride.

FYI....I've seen a few recommendations for Tiger's Eye....be VERY WARY. As TNReb stated....greens are STILL an issue at the Cat's courses (at least as of Fall '12). Our fall trip trip '11 played all 4 Cat's courses and a couple had serious issues with the greens. We had a free replay because of this that we used in September '12 to play Leopard's Chase. .....they were using ALL of the practice green to patch areas on the course and there were still several greens with huge areas out of play (or should have been). Too many other places to waste your time there.

PS...if you don't pre-book....I've gotten great rates at the booker in the entrance at Martin's Golf and Tennis - but you can only book 2 days in advance.

I would look at Farmstead, Tidewater, Barefoot, Oyster Bay and Long Bay. Rivers Edge is a up and down course that is on the up right now. The Glens are nice options also.

I'll second this... I usually book a package thru Brian at Golf Desk. However my last trip down I found myself wanting more and couldn't get a hold of Brian on the weekend so I went to this kiosk. They have limited times available and short notice, but I scored a super cheap round at Oyster Bay as a single. Came with full breakfast and lunch too!

  • 3 weeks later...

I always stay in Calabash so I have only played north Myrtle courses. Here are my top 5

1. Thistle
2. Oyster Bay. Best layout on the north strand. Condition is not always perfect
3. Glen Dornoch. The holes on the intercostal will be remembered forever
4. Crow Creek. Really great par 3s
5. The Pearl. Again great holes along the intercoastal.

The par 6, 787 yard finishing hole makes Farmstead a topic for conversation. Haven't played Barefoot but heard they are awesome.
The cats are overrated except maybe Leopards Chase.

I'm surprised to hear people brag on Oyster Bay. I played it 3 years ago and didn't like it at all. HOWEVER, I think it is because my group wanted to play from the white tees. I think it's just under 5600 yards? It was ridiculously short for me and I felt like I was hitting 3 irons off every other tee.

With everyone else bragging on it, I would like to play it again some day, from the back tees.
