It's kinda sad to think that he probably never would have made it on today's tour because he was a late bloomer.

Thanks for posting, Dairic.
I haven't had a chance to watch, so this may be meaningless, but I always shy away from inter-generational comparisons. The environment is totally different. Impossible to say how things would have turned out given different circumstances.
I cringe when somebody opines that Tiger is so much longer than Jack was. You think Jack wouldn't hit the weight room if he were born the same year as Tiger?
You got me curious now.

True enough Crab. In a lot of ways it's a different game than it used to be. In some ways I prefer the old esthetic of the game. I try to play with persimmon when playing on a course that was designed back in the day. To be honest I don't find it that hard to adapt so I can only assume that great players of any era could play great golf in any era.

The truy sad thing is that we will, likely, never hear a story like Mr. Hogan's again.
Instead the bios will talk about a player 'coming from one of the lesser West Palm Beach country clubs .... facing the tough, cut-throat competition on the junior amateur circuit ... spending countless hours on the range refining his swing at the Hank McHarbetter Academy...'.
You wonder how many gifted athletes, or businessmen, artists, writers, etc..., that never reached their potential or persued their "true calling" because of the harsh circumstances and hard decisions that needed to be made during the era of the Depression to WWII. Sounds like we were close to never hearing about Ben Hogan. Then what would Ant have done? Probably adopt the pseudonym of SSSP and spend his day trying to kick ceilings.

Curious about this. You mean he couldn't get on the tour because the way it's setup now? Or it would've been too expensive?

Ignoring the fact that most aspiring kids today have great swings through the tutelage of great coaches (eg $$$). Would Hogan the caddie have been good enough to survive today's Q-school with an uncontrollable hook swing? I'm not sure that he would have. I mean he didn't win anything for ten years after he joined the tour and I'm guessing that there are a lot more "good" players today than there were back in 1930. I think at his peak he'd be ranked right up there with the best players of today, but early Hogan would be selling the latest Taylormade RocketBallz from your local retail golf shop. Could be and probably wrong though.

It's interesting that you say this because Jackie Burke opines on the same topic in his (great) interview with Jim McLean from years ago (which is available on the Secret in the Dirt youtube channel). He speculates that we lose a lot of truly great players because most people don't mature mentally and emotionally until their (IIRC) 30's, by which point they are out of pro golf.

I think he implies that Hogan probably wouldn't have made it today, and this is coming from a guy who knew and revered Hogan as much any anyone who ever lived.

Great upload btw, I've been looking for this for years.
