POLL: Urinating on the course...

Recommended Posts

I recently got into a heated debate over going #1 on the course (please stay away from #2 in this topic - that's just different beast) and noticed that everyone is different when it comes to this topic. I don't want this to turn into a monster golf etiquette thread (there's plenty of those) - I just thought it would be interesting to here people's reasons behind there answers. I personally fall into the catagory of depends on if it is a public or private course because I learned how to play golf at my friend's country club so I have always had kind of a fear of if I get caught doing something wrong at a private course, it would make whoever invited me on the couse look bad.

Oh and just for everyone's viewing pleasure (because it's on every other commerical on the Golf Channel)...

I just can't understand how people can get through life if they can't anticipate the need to go in ten minutes. Yet certain shrubs next to 2nd and 11th tee boxes have a distinctively different color thanks to them being used as public bathrooms. I use the loo at the turn and before/after the round

I'm not sure how the temperatures in Finland are, but if you play in the midwest during the thick of summer, the hummidity is enough to kill you. Sometimes you have to constantly drink water...a lot of times that leads to having to take a leak before the turn without a stall for a few holes. It just happens sometimes and is unavoidable. It's not pleasant, but just be discreet.

Don't do it myself except extreme emergencies, regular partner does all the time but is very discreet about it so it doesn't really bother me too much.

Four years ago as my wife and I are rolling down the 12th fairway we look over on 13 tee to see this idiot hanging it out right on the front edge of the tee box, 13 is a short par three facing the only houses on the course and right behind the tee box is one of three porta potties that are spaced around the course besides the clubhouse that is central to most of the course. You could see this idiot from four different holes and five houses were in full view.

Fortunately, even at my age I can still go extended periods of time between urinations. Unfortunately, when I drink large amounts in the heat of summer, it all sweats out of my hands. I can soak 4 or 5 gloves a round.

There's 2 factors that play in this discussion. One is the people and two are the facilities. For my own sake, I try to use actual facilities whenever possible, but I've been to some courses where they literally have no bathrooms on the course (outside of the clubhouse).

Sometimes...when you got to go, you got to go...and if the course doesn't have an adequate supply of bathrooms available...well...they are not helping the situation.

When I was a kid, there were no bathrooms on the muni I played, no porta-potties, and you didn't get anywhere near the clubhouse all through the round (the 1st tee was a good 400-500 yards from the clubhouse, and the 14th green was there, 15-18 were another good walk away). I rarely have to go on the course where I can't hold it, but when I do, I'm pretty discreet.

I used to avoid it because I wasn't sure if it was frowned upon at nice private courses, until a loop I had as a kid at a very nice club told me once that if I needed to pee that "there are lots of places to go out here".

Never looked back, and now I pee in the bushes in favor of portopotties. If there is no running water I see no reason to use it.

My wife says I'm a camel because I can go for hours without having to urinate. She, on the other hand, has to go 17 times a round which is mildly annoying.

One of my playing partners says, "it's as integral a part of golf as a ball, a club and a hole." I disagree. I'm not totally against it - but I avoid it if possible. My friend, however, looks for opportunities when a woman or child is paired up with us sometimes to do it. I find that a bit too crude for my liking...but it's his call....

The older I get the more trees get watered. My time in the military taught me that when an opportunity to go comes; I pee.
I always go just before the round and try to go at the turn.
You have to be discreet, and you have to be aware of your audience. I bet you can't find too much cover when playing desert golf!

I once went to an annual meeting for a private club, and one of the residents whose property backs up the course (and a member) stated quite emphatically that she would call the police if she ever saw people on the course who were peeing. That, combined with the whole sex offender (if caught peeing in public) thing kind of set me straight. It was funny to hear the murmurs throughout the meeting room after she spoke up. I don't think it changed behavior much though....I see the same guys doing it.

Heck, I find I play better if I have some "urgency".

Haha, you don't get registered as a sex offender for peeing in public...just sayin'. I found that out in college.

I don't think it has anything to do with public or private. For me it depends if the course has bathrooms out on the course or not. If a course has them evenly spaced out on the course then I certainly use them. I played last Sat and I waited to use the porta pot. Only problem was it wasn't there this time of year. So I walked down into the woods and did my stuff. If have to go you have to go. When I do my stuff I always make sure I go way off the beaten path and make sure I'm out of view of any other people on the course and houses on the course.I go so deep in the woods I usually come out with a few balls besides my own.

I try to wait until there is a restroom but sometimes you just gotta go. If I have to go, I try to be discrete and find a bush or tree. I recently had to use a cactus while watching the LPGA, I didn't think I could wait another 5 minutes. I was worried i would be hassled but there was no one near by and I was 10 yds into the desert.

There's a story about a very exclusive (as exlusive as it gets) local private club where a wife of a member complained about seeing another member relieving himself on a tree. She apparently campaigned to have the practice banned. The by-laws now supposedly include language stating that 'females are allowed to pee on trees too.'
