I know it's an addiction... what I don't get is why ever start??????

Cigarettes, cigars and dip is just totally disgusting. Why would anyone want to do that (by choice) to themselves is beyond my comprehension. Bad breath, bad teeth, bad health, waste of money.... boy sounds appetizing.
As far as cigarettes and chew is concerned, I agree. It's kinda hard to understand why anyone would do it.

I have been chewin on and off for about 25 years. I'll go years without chewin , then start up again. It started when I was a kid. A friend offered me some. And that was that.

Cigars on the other hand...that's a whole different story. A good cigar is one of the finer things in life. Right up there with wine and cheese.

A friend of mine brought some Cohiba Siglio VI back from Cuba. The aroma is amazing and it doesn't leave a nasty taste in your mouth like so many of the store bought cigars here in the states. It's enjoyable to sit back with some friends, chat, and smoke a good cigar. Some nice scotch or whiskey to go with it helps also :)
Man, you're just a bundle of bad habits aren't you? :)
You'll understand when you're older.

Well, I'm on the trying to quit train. Went to a new dentist recently and the lady cleaning my teeth found a wisdom tooth in sideways. When she was looking and since they're referring me to an oral surgeon, she said she's going to get them to biopsy where I always hold my dip as a precaution. She said there's nothing to worry about but since I dip and they'll have me under she wants a biopsy to be certain: I've dipped a long time but get saying that, even if she said she's not worried just being cautious, makes it very real for me. My son will be 4 soon, I need to be there for him as long as possible.
Good luck. I quit smoking in November of 2012 (year and a few months) because of my son who was a little over 1. The first few weeks of quitting will be brutal. I threw my last few away and a day later was looking in the trash to see if the pack was still there. Someone had switched the bag. I had filled up my gas tank and left all my credit cards and cash at home to prevent me from buying. After a week it wasn't so bad, then after the second week it was pretty smooth sailing with just the occasional strong urge. Now I go to bars and on road trips without even thinking of doing it. I must admit I've developed a sunflower seed habit to keep me occupied on long drives.

Love this thread!

I haven't been on the forum in about 1 year and I'm surprised to see that this thread is still alive.

I did quit the dip last year.

I was talking with my father and I told him that it had been almost 1 year since I had a cigarette. He says, "Well, that's good son. I'm really glad that your not smoking or chewing that tobacco. People who chew tobacco are just asking for it. It's only a matter of time before it will cause problems for them. Do you know what they do to lab rats when they test chew? They shave off some of the rats fur and apply tobacco juice to it every day. Eventually, the rat gets cancer on that very spot."

Yes, the chew went into the trash that night.

I'm a firm believe that when it's time, it's time. I have smoked maybe 10 cigs in the past 15 months and luckily had no desire to pick it back up full time. Just lucky I guess.

Jack Link's Original Jerky Chew!
I like to buy the Copenhagen style can of shredded beef jerky. Then I can put it in my back pocket and wear a circle in my jeans. Then when I put some in my lip and never spit... People ask me if I swallow the spit and I say 'yes, cause I'm a real man.'

As others have said, it's not necessarily the nicotine addiction that is hard to kick, it's the oral fixation.

I've tried a few different things. A friend told me put a jolly rancher in your mouth instead, didn't work.
I've tried just switching to the beef jerky shred, didn't work.
I've tried sun flower seeds, didn't work.
I tried this (http://www.getgrinds.com/product.html) and man oh man, that's the best thing that has worked so far.

After a stressful day at work, I still slip up now and again and throw in a good old grizz pouch, but anytime I used to dip routinely (driving to work, playing golf, etc.) I used a grinds pouch instead.

That was on the tv show shark tank. I was really interested how it really tasted/worked.

That's where I saw it, and I ordered some. It's been good for about a month now. I used to dip pouches, so the texture, size, consistency, etc. is all the same.

Do you spit when using it or swallow for a nice coffee taste? Not being perverted by this question.
I spit it still. Not sure if it's the habit of spitting, but that's what I do. Though it tastes good, I just am used to spitting I guess.

Grizzly Long Cut Mint. Used to be a Skoal Mint guy but when I was a poor college student I could walk in to the mini mart by campus with a dollar get a can of Griz and walk out with change. Havn't switched since.

I'm using pouches now and looking to quit. The Grinds have peeked my interest and seems like a nice concept. What flavor would you recommend?

Yuck. Have fun with cancer and gum disease later on in life. And yuck to smoking as well. The human body was never meant to inhale smoke.
Well that was a helpful post. You don't think the people who smoke and chew don't know about the risks involved. Unless you've ever been hooked on either one you don't know how difficult it is to stop (and the majority do want to stop). It's easy to sit up there on your high horse and make snide comments.

I've been dipping for 5 years, since high school baseball. I've "quit" 3 or 4 times for a month or two and pick it right back up. I'm going to try that Grinds stuff, hopefully I'll be off for good!

Funny, my grandfather has chewed tobacco since age 7. We just celebrated his 92nd birthday a few days ago. He still has all of his teeth too. But yeah, everyone gets cancer. I'm sure you, mr Jesus Christ, have never had any habits of any kind and feel high and mighty sitting there judging everyone. Internet tough guys sure are funny though.

I used to pack a dip when I played baseball.

Every kind. Redman, skoal, kodiak (too sweet) and copenhagen.

Copenhagen was the best. Used to do too much dip. There were some wrestlers who would swallow the dip juice, I couldn't do that, wuld yak for sure.

One time, we were driving around and a cop pulled us over and was like,

"What's in that bag?"

My buddy told him not to touch it (he had been spitting in the bag) but the cop grabbed it and got really mad.

They made dip illegal in my school and so that ended my dip career.

Copenhagen was the best, though.

 • 4 weeks later...

Broke down and bought a can yesterday.

On the way home from a friends house I was thinking about cigars and then Copenhagen Wintergreen popped into my head.

I couldn't resist.

Not sure how long this binge will last, but as for now I'm enjoying it.

Started Copenhagen when I was 14 (baseball player). Quit when I was 34. Started the Camel snus pouches recently - takes me 3 days to go thru a tin. Bad habit.

Some Camel rep handed me a free snus can when I was in a store buying a coke. Guess I should have said no.

Copenhagen is the best.
