New driver or putter?

Which should I go for?
I just wanted to get a couple of opinions. My wife is asking em what I want for Christmas and I can't decide if I want a new driver or a new putter. I'm pretty new to the game, but getting better, I usually shoot in the high 80's or low 90's. I currently don't use a driver, I tee off with my 3 wood and my putter is just a cheap Wal-Mart special. Which do you think would benefit me more, a new, quality putter or a driver? Thanks ahead of time for your input.

Definitely go with the driver, get a tour version if possible, with one of the premium shafts to go with it, Fuji, Graphite Design, Accra, etc. Be sure and get an X flex, this will save you money in the long run, it keeps you from having to pull and tip that stiff one that you would most likely order in the first place. :ok:

Seriously, find yourself a nice putter, one that fits your eye, be sure and not to spend too much for it, chances are you'll be replacing it shortly along the way to improvement. While drivers are for the more accomplished golfer, distance off the tee is only applicable if you have a shot after your tee shot lands, not behind a tree, a bush, in the deep stuff, and not in a fairway bunker.

OR!.......you could do like most of us and get both a new putter and driver, spending way more than we can afford and way more putter and driver than we can, with skill, handle. .... .... :cheesy: Have fun deciding.

I'd go with the driver. Putters are totally feel and confidence aside from length one model doesn't have many features. I have found several nice used putters, and bought loads of new ones(liquidation sale Mizuno T.P. Mills workshop $60), at off course retailers for dirt cheap(same putter as DiMarco for $50). I have never bought a used driver. I usually have an idea what I want i.e. loft, shaft, and flex. Putters I just walk up look around and almost have an epiphany. It would be easier to explain buying a new or used putter for upwards of $175, or significantly less, to the old lady after she drops twice that on a driver than the reverse. Am I saying take advantage of the situation? Maybe I am maybe I'm not. It's just cool the wife supports you getting out on the course. My bro used to play once or twice a week, now it's once every two months.

i'd say put "your" () money into the driver...you can get good deals on used putters, that are just as good as anything you buy brand new today...i've had the same odyssey putter for 7 years...i haven't noticed enough technology change making me a better putter vs the technology change that can put you better position off the tee w/the driver...

I change drivers 3-4x a year it seems, but my putter is my $$$ club and the oldest club in my bag. You use your putter much more each round than your driver, which is harder to hit than a FW. Find the right putter and don't worry about what you use off the tee! Most important clubs in your bag are: putter, wedge and driver. For new golfers or high handicappers, get a great putter and wedge and work on your short game!

If you can find fairways with your 3 wood, then definetely go with the putter. If you're an analytical/mathmetical type thinker, look at this way: if you (theoretically) one putt every green (it's possible)---that's 18 strokes. If that's the case, you have 54 other strokes to scrap around the golf course and still be a scratch golfer!! There simply is no more important club than a putter....you use it most often and getting proficient with it will have the most immediate impact on your game.

That's my 2 cents...

Go with whichever will make the most noticeable improvement. If you are hitting the ball long and straight enough with the 3 wood, go for a nice putter. If you putt ok with what you've got, try a driver.

Just make sure that if you get a driver, get something easy to hit (i.e. lots of loft). A few really good clubs that can be had relatively cheaply are the Ping G2, Callaway 454, Cleveland Launcher or Taylor Made R5. All are fairly long and very forgiving. I would recommend for someone fairly new to the game that you try something with about 11 degrees of loft.

Get a great putter you really like. You will get much more out of it. If you get a driver you will want a new one in six months.

I agree with the putter people that you will use your putter over a course of a round 2-3 times more than a driver. And the old saying "drive for show...putt for dow". Is true. I played with a 65 year old guy over the weekend that could not hit a tee shot more than 200 yards. The course we played was 6500 yards and he shot an 83. He got up and down all day long and made all his putts.

However, if you are using a 3-wood off the tee you need to take advantage of the super size, easy to hit drivers on the market today. Without doubt if you are high 80's low 90's you will be able to hit a supersize driver.

Go into any golf shop and you will see plenty to demo and choose from. I recommend the Nike SQ. That sucker just wants to go straight. And when you hit it on the screws it flys.
