50 Best Courses under $50

Recommended Posts

Need your help fellow GolfWRX'ers. Beginning research for an article I plan to write regarding the 50 Best Courses in America under $50. Going to be highlighting one course per state. Will have in-depth evaluations on several criteria, including quality of course, amenities, natural beauty/views, location, clubhouse, "fun factor", etc... Highest price posted with cart MUST be less than $50. Looking for lots of suggestions. Thanks!

We have some outstanding courses in the Palm Springs area that can be played for under $50. The catch is that you have to play them in June, July, or August when it is over 110F. The rest of the year they are much more expensive. On a serious note, I would nominate Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, CA, which is a 45 minute drive from Palm Springs. It is basically on the other side of Mt. San Jacinto, which you see when they play the "Bob Hope" or "Dinah Shore" events out here. Soboba is $40 per round and previous home of the Nationwide Tour. The Soboba Indians purchased a few years ago and built a nice clubhouse/bar/restaurant. I play here quite a bit in the winter when rates are high at home. Solid layout, always in great shape, and a good test of golf. The Pepsi Tour played there today.

Willingers in the south of the Twin CIties has been several times recognized as one of the best under $50 in America by publications. I was skeptic until I played it. Premium experience and bring all your clubs, that you will need them. Also, don't forget your ball retriever.

Got stood up by a fishing guide, decided to find a golf course, and found this place. That was 20 years ago on a great trip with my dad, but looking at the rates it's still under $50.

Pinon Hills should cover New Mexico for you.

Please post the final results of the article. I'm interested to see the final project as $50 on the weekend with cart is tough to find in many areas. I started to look at each of the recommendations and quickly found most of them don't meet the requirements you listed (under $50 with cart at highest published time). Not sure if people aren't reading the actual requirements or if they just want to post courses they like and think are good value. There was at least one course recommended that is over $100 peak rate. I can understand the people that posted where the course was just over, like $51.

Don't know yet what their rates will be, but the former Minot Country Club is going to re-open this summer as a daily fee facility on the west side of Minot, ND. The course and all facilities were destroyed in the summer floods of 2011, so the course being brought back from the dead by former members of the club would make for an interesting story. I was a member when stationed there 6 years ago and the layout and conditions were outstanding, especially considering the relatively small town it's in.

Bakker Crossing is a nice country course out in the middle of farm land on the south side of Sioux Falls, SD. Willow Run on the east side of town is also an excellent value, but just misses out on your price criteria.

These prices are just over the $50 limit I know, but honestly you're not going to find much outside of run down munis that cost under $50, with cart, on weekends during high season here in NC.

That said, if you live in Greensboro, NC, you can get on either course at Bryan Park for $50 or less on weekends with cart (Greensboro residents receive a $10 discount, so the normal rates would be $60 for the Champions Course and $55 for the Players Course on weekend/holiday mornings). I've never played a course anywhere that offers a great layout, consistently good conditions (bent grass struggles in the heat here over summer and Bryan Park keeps their greens in better shape than some private clubs), and costs less than the Champions Course.
