50 Best Courses under $50

Recommended Posts

I would second the Utah selections, although Sand Hollow I believe will miss your requirement, even during the off-season. Look at Soldier Hollow (Gold Course) where they hosted 2012 USGA Amateur Pub Links. Soldier Hollow is in the beautiful Heber Valley and the Gold course has significant elevation changes that provide amazing views back down the valley. It has some large, undulating greens with plenty of quality bunkering. It is a true "mountain" golf experience. Valley View is a gem and is a place where they have held the state amateur in the past. The course sits off the highway down in a little hollow. It has some elevation changes, but not as severe as Soldier Hollow. There are also plenty of trees, water, and bunkers, although it is an extremely fair course tee to green. The greens, on the surface, don't appear too threatening as the undulations are apparent, but not overwhelming, however, there is rarely a straight putt and the breaks are extremely difficult to read. VV has a great mix of holes and it is all you can handle from the tips.

I also might add that in most rankings, Old Silo in Kentucky is ranked as the number 1 public course. It is a wonderful Graham Marsh golf course. I was with my wife when she was working at UK for a couple weeks two summers ago and I was able to head up to Old Silo. I played it twice, by myself, during the week at about 8 am and there were only a couple groups ready to go out at that time. It is an amazing golf course with a totally small town vibe.

Rivercut in Springfield, MO. Read best public course in MO and completely worth it. Great elevation changes and the gEounds crew always has it in great shape. Played there all the time during college and miss it.

Millcreek Golf Club near Rochester, NY, such a fun course, very challenging, lots of elevation change, always has been in incredible condition.

Second this one amongst many others in NY. We have lots here that are amazing

Haven't been to Mill Creek yet, but its on my list of courses for this season...I've heard so many great things about it.

Also since ebierman said he'll consider a bit over $50, then I'd like to add Greystone (234golf.com) golf course in an eastern suburb of Rochester, NY. It's a beautiful links style course with lots of elevation changes and outstandingly maintained. It also has a nice pub and restaurant with a great view of the course. Most people I've taken their always love it and say its one of the nicest courses they've ever played.

We are very fortunate in western ny with so many great golf courses at comparatively good prices.

Just depends on time of the week. If it can be a mid-week round The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay part of the Tennessee golf trail is around $35 with cart. Bermuda fairways and greens and the course is built on the lake. Great views and really worth the small fee. Plus you can stretch it out to over 7000 yards if you want. Location is Harrison, TN just outside of Chattanooga.

I am really interested to see what pops up on this thread for Illinois. There are some great value courses but being int he Chicagoland area everything is pretty expensive when it comes tot he "rack rate". I am very grateful for golfnow and ezlinks.

Arrowhead Pointe golf course outside of Elberton GA. I played it last week before heading to Augusta and it was absolutely phenomenal. 10 holes of the course are on lake russel and it was by far in better shape then any state park golf course I've ever seen or played. If anyone gets the opportunity to play this course take a camera you'll need it. I really don't do it justice with this post its that gorgeous. The staff was awesome and I played in 3 hours going absolutely as slow as I could just to take in the views.
$46 with cart within an hour of Augusta during Masters week.

In Tennessee this is nearly a no-brainer. Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, TN. It's just outside Nashville and is in absolutely perfect condition with it's zoysia fairways and fast greens. I'll put the fairways up against any private club in the state. It's a perfect combination of rolling and flat terrain with just the right amount of trouble to get into. Here is some information from their website. And no, I am in no way affiliated with the course, I just love going there for the quality and cost!

Yea, gonna be tough to find a winner from Chicago. I would guess off the top of my head George Dunne is the closest in the area, pretty sure its less than $60 with a cart, but I dont think its less than $50.

As others have said it all depends on what day you're playing and if the resident rate counts for anything.

If so, Montauk Downs State Park is $43 plus $17 for a cart (NYS residents), so it pushes you slightly over that limit. But I'll send you the $10 overage if you can find me a better course in that price range in NYS.

OP - just how do you plan on using this "data" without knowing the experience of the posters? If you only play a handful of favorites, it's near impossible to have the perspective to really say what the "best" courses are state/nation wide. Without tiding up your approach, I'm betting you're getting a lot of "best course under $50 within 50 miles of where I live" from the group.

Harrison Hills, Attica, IN. Really fun layout. Mixture of classic old design (1920's) and new holes added in mid 90's when course was expanded to 18 holes. Always in great shape.

$40 w/cart on weekday
$45 w/cart on weekend

I'll second Harrison Hills and nominate Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru, IN. Really neat course built in a former rock quarry / strip mine. $39.00 max rate.
