1954 Toney Penna TP Persimmon Woods Restoration

I uncovered these Penna woods in the back of a corrugated metal shack owned by a 95 year old friend of mine! He has probably 10,000 clubs, many quite rusted, that he has collected since the 1940s. I am helping him to organize the collection and bought many of the more interesting woods and sets of irons that I have discovered in the process. The Toney Penna TP here is interesting because of the shafts. I have never seen this insert around the shaft band. Anyone know what it is?

I have several sets of Macgregor Penna VIP irons, they have the same shaft band. Don't know what it signifies, looks like brass foil but in- sets in the shaft,.smooth joint,not overlapping.

I wonder if it has something to do with stiffening the upper shaft in order to produce a lower kick point.

Any chance of showing some different views of the heads, ie face and top? Just seeing the soles is teasing me.

I may have an answer on your shaft question. I recently regripped some Propel shafts and found that the shafts were copper plated under the chrome, I guess to improve the bonding of Chromium to Ferrous metal in the electroplating process. Makes for a very high quality product, if a little heavy.

Copper underplate was masked before applying chrome plating. Nothing functional.

[/quote]Charley, was this the way they made the Colokrom models and others,, by masking off the face area? If so, then if you wished to replate the copper face only could you mask the existing chrome areas?
On my clubs the chrome is very good (again a very high quality product) and this would save the expense of having to strip all the plating and starting over with copper then chrome.

I appreciate Mr. Penna's response, but if this is not functional, why expose 2 inches of the base shaft at all? Also, is it rare to copper plate shafts in this era? I have never heard of this type of shaft treatment. I cannot seem to upload more pictures of these unrestored Pennas, keep getting a file too big reply.

When the Colokrom irons were made, the raw head was copper plated and the face was masked prior to chroming.

Thanks, Keith, I think that confirms what Charley was saying earlier.
Thinking about it, I am sure that if you were to mask off the Chrome, you could enhance the copper plating by electrolysis. This is the bit which gets tatty on the Colokroms and look-alikes.
