Playing my first Tournament!

Hey guys, I'm about to participate in my first golf tournament which is the Rockford Men's City here in Illinois. I play to a 5 handicap and was just looking for any sorts of tips or things to think about prior to play. I have played in a league for two years and pair up whenever I can, so I'm used to golfing in front of other just not the super competitive feel of a tournament.

Have fun and take a rulebook with you, just so you can double check things

Know the rules...especially any local ones or committee decisions

Don't do anything unusual to prepare for the tournament, like hitting 10x the number of balls you normally do, or getting there 2 hours before your tee time, or clean your clubs the night before.

You want it to feel as normal of a round as possible.

You will most likely get nervous. Take deep breathes through your nose and hold the air in your lungs for a count of ten and then let the air out your mouth. This works, helps settle you down. Good luck. Remember to hit one shot at a time and have fun, it is just a game and no one will remember if you played good or bad but yourself anyway.

Play for par and take the birdies when they come. When in doubt about a ruling, play another ball in (if appropriate) and sort it out later.

you will likely feel nervous in the beginning----this is completely normal.

this feeling will lessen and eventually go away as the round goes on...just focus on one shot at a time..

Have fun! If you enjoy the competitive atmosphere of athletics you'll certainly enjoy it. Don't take yourself too seriously !

As said earlier stick with your normal routine. Do not show up any earlier than normal, do not practice any more than usual, do not eat anything out of the norm, etc.

I see guys do this all the time. Stuff their faces on free foods the club may provide, show up 2+ hours before hand and hit 100 balls and putt for 40 mins only to mentally fatigue themselves.

I'm playing in the Men's Classic as well. Don't be too intimidated. Just go out and play golf! I'll more than likely see you there!

Forget all that nonsense. What gets me through tournament play, LOAD UP on as many bets as you can. You will be playing for the side money and your score will take care of itself.

I normally find I can play better when I have green backs at stake!

depending on the flight and group.... the mens city is a great tournament for your first one, refresh your self with all the drop rules. have fun
