Anyone Ever Use Dish Soap and Water to Install Grips??

Hey all,

In the middle of taking a couple grips off to change them I forgot that I don't have any more lighter fluid that I normally use. I searched for alternatives that I might have around to use. The only one on the list that I know I have is one that I have never heard of before and can't imagine it working even if I did have some. It is 3 parts water to 1 part DISH SOAP.

Several sites list it as a suitable substitute to install grips. There isn't anything in there that would act as a solvent to activate the tape. I have no doubts that it would slicken the tape surface up so that the grip would slide right on, but what happens when the mixture drys? There's nothing to hold the grip in place as the tape hasn't been activated...or has it?

So, I wanted to ask and see if anyone has used it and if so, how it turned out for them. How secure did the grips turn out when you went to play the next time? How about a month later? Did they perform just as if you had used a proper grip solvent or not? Would you use it again?

Let me know cause if it works for you guys, I'm gonna try it.

Thanks for the time.

Grip solvent doesn't activate the tape. Actually it's the opposite, it makes the tape slick so the grip can slide on, then the solvent dries quickly as it is very volatile, leaving the adhesive to bond to the grip. Soapy water would work perhaps, but as mentioned it would take forever to dry.

I use it when I install grips using an air compressor. Never heard of it being used any other ways

I normally use the water activated tape with the soapy water, but have also used water with the regular tape. I think the liquid mostly just acts as a lubricant to slide the grips on. I've regripped some original clubs that had very little tape on as it came from the manufacturers. Any grip tape is sticky, the grips fit on tight, so just lubricant is necessary.

Never had a problem.

Paint thinner is mineral spirits. Basically the same thing as grip solvent. Get the odorless type and recycle the stuff during gripping. A quart will last you a long time.

If you can get the grips on using soapy water as a lubricant, I can't see anything wrong per say. As the others say, it will take longer to dry than using solvent, but once dry it should be fine.

With long putter grips especially if using a one piece of 21 inches or the middle section of a two piece a little soap is a ... must .. because a large amount of solvent is needed and does not always work and if the grip gets stuck ... well you are about screwed ..cause it can't be advanced and dependent how far down the shaft the grip gets stuck it is next to impossible to remove to re-install ......in my experiences a little dawn liquid does a very good job and evaporates similar to other solvents

I've never tried it but my father used to use dish soap from time to time -- it takes longer to dry, but 36 hours and you should be good to go.

If anyone uses this technique know that the soap will never evaporate. Use too much and the grips will likely slip since the soap acts like a lubricant. Bad idea overall. Get some mineral spirits or similar and install the grips properly.

Thanks for the info everyone.

The air compressor interests me. I read about it a few months ago and thought I'd try it. I have access to a compressor with an attachment that has s small nozzle that fits perfectly in the hole at the end of the grips, but I don't have access to a vice close to it. So I had to improvise a bit.
I grabbed my grip and put the nozzle in the hole and started the air. The grip started on the shaft and went about 1/2 way without problems. It then kinda froze and I put a bit more air in the grip to get it going again and then I see a BIG BUBBLE come out on one side of the grip. It was as big as a tennis ball. I got it to go down and then got the grip all the way on, but that spot that bubbled out never was like it should be so I had to cut it off.
Right after doing it I thought it would've been much easier if I used some kind of lube to get it on easier. My good friend has a bike shop and whenever he puts grips on the handlebars he squirts Windex in them before putting them on with an air hose just like golf shops use to put on grips and they slide right on easy as pie and in a couple hours they're dry and won't budge.

So, do you guys that use air also use some kind of lubricant to get the grip to go on easier? Of course I know it would go much better if I had a vice to hold the shaft for me.

Thanks

you need to use the vice, and use the air in short bursts. there's definitely a technique for it. also you want to get a piece of PVC or something to slide over the grip to protect yourself in case you explode a grip.

Also don't try to blow off grips that were put on with solvent tape, waste of time in my experiences and blown up grips suck. LOUD, it stings too.

I use the water-activated tape and use dish soap. Never had a problem until tonight installing Winn Excel grips (the real old style tan ones) - one got stuck half way down the 8 iron, and I know I used more than enough solvent. Gonna have to use my friend's air compressor tomorrow night and try to wet her down the grip and blow her off. It seemed like it set in half a minute instead of three BUT these Winns have been a PITA anyway so I don't think it was the tape........never again. I'm buying Iomics next year. :stink:

I read many, many threads about putting on grips with this method or that method, and somewhere there is always "I had a problem once using _____". We're putting $9 grips on a $500 set of clubs. Why can't we buy a quart of Naptha or Grip solvent and do it correctly? I've put on literally 1,000s or grips over the years, and i have never, ever had a problem when using grip solvent or Naptha. Cutting a corner over a $6 bottle of fluid just don't make sense to me .......

If it was me i'd use wax and grease remover solvent. It a common mild solvent. Or, most likely, Id just wait an order Brampton grip solvent online. Brampton solvent is soooo easy to work with.
