Cast muscle back???

Ivyguy

Recommended Posts

Yeah, they feel nice. But they have a fairly wide sole. I just don't have a great opportunity to hit these things anywhere but on a mat. It seems like I could play on the tour if they would let me hit off of one of those things, I always pound everything.

I would be just a bit worried about the wider soles (looks wider than the s59's, probably why they are more popular than the s59 model) and a steep plane.

I don't think you'll find a true cast stainless muscle back blade which seems to be what you're asking for...don't think such a thing exists. I could be wrong though.

People say Titleist forgings are "clicky" compared to Mizuno and the like. Not sure I buy that really, but you could give them a try. Also the Wilson blades are made of 8620 steel rather than the 1020 you find on more traditional forgings like Mizuno, Titleist, Bridgestone, etc. Not sure the Wilsons are even forged in the traditional sense, I think they might be form forged which is something different.

The Rocketblades Tours mentioned above are not really blades but they aren't bad clubs. My friend rented a set that had these irons in them last week when we plated together and I hit them on the range before we went off. Compared to my J40 DPCs they might not have been quite as soft feeling, but they felt nice. Still...not a muscle back blade at all really.

Titleist 962b, thin sole with triple sole grind, very minimal offset, stainless cast irons that will last , blade profile in a small cavity back . The Cleveland TA1 blades and Reid Lockhart blades were also cast. IMO, very difficult to go wrong with the 962b, 762b, or s56 with a WRX appropriate grind, but those who do not have the patience to accept an adjustment period due to solid ballstriking requirement these clubs require for maximum reward need not apply.

Maxfli australian blades might work well.
[/quote]

In Australian Blades, only the 97s and the last model 1999s were cast. There are other cast blades, though they tend to be some form of carbon steel or soft stainless, and not some of the firmer stainless models (431, 17-4).

I own a set of Purefit blades that were said to be cast 1020, IIRC; Dynacraft had a set of cast blades in the early 2000s, as well. Again, these likely don't fit the OP's stated requirements.

The two that come to my mind have already been mentioned here; The Maxfli's and the TA1's, I have hit both, and they are demanding. Even though I'm not a Ping guy, if I were searching for blade-like and cast, I would opt for the s56's. They don't feel like Mizuno's, but they feel good. Rumors are floating that Ping may soon have a newer s model, maybe hold out for awhile and see their new offering.

I've got a set of these hiding in my basement. They're pretty decent, although when you look down at them at address they have a ton of offset.

They're long since gone, the irons, I mean. SMT just hasn't updated their website to reflect it.

All current Blades/Musclebacks are forged but you should look at low handicap cast cavity back irons such as Ping s56, Taylormade R9 TP (if you can get a B stamped set get that), Callaway Razr X tour, Callaway X Hot Pro, Cleveland CG7 Tour, Ping I20,

Taylormade M1 430 9.5, Diamana D+ 70X
Taylormade M1 15, 19, Diamana D+ 80X
Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 18, Project X 6.5
Mizuno MP-4 3-9, Project X 6.5
Vokey SM6 48, 54, 60, TTDG TI X100

The first set of brand new irons I ever bought were cast blades - Palmer Peerless. Bought 1 - SW and loved those things. Played with them for many years. Strangely, the 1-iron was the best club in the bag for me. These clubs were cast carbon steel, not stainless. If you want a firm feel, look for stainless.

The Titlest 990B are a good suggestion. 431 stainless, softer than 17-4, but should provide a firm feel.

I have Wilson FG62's which are 8620. I actually was drawn to them because of the 8620 carbon since I love it so much in Wedges. By no means do they feel clicky. Still soft but solid at the same time. Actually Titleist forgings even though hey are 1020 feel more firm than my Wilsons. The only other company I know that made a cast blade is/was Alpha Golf. The V2 MB which is made form 304 stainless. Traditional lofts as well with a 48 degree PW.

I'd forgotten about these, but I think they're still available; the Bang Tour Tools blades. They make a Classic I, Classic II, and Classic III. The first are based on FG17s, though they've changed the short iron shape a bit. The Classic II are Wilson Staffs from the late 60s, and the Classic III are based on the Apex II.

Problem with the Classic III set, they messed up the club lofts, and the PW is 45°; they were made one club stronger than they should have been. Such is life.

Ultimately, these are 304 stainless, so again, may not meet the requirements of the OP looking for something on the clickier side.

Titleist 762B's might not be a bad option either, sets can be had reasonably on ebay. You could also look into an older set of Cleveland 588 blades.

If you like some click, Titleist is the brand. As mentioned above. The 962b's play very bladelike as well.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.
