thanks

Ok, so you put the shaft in the spine finder and then pull the tip downward toward the ground. The shaft springs into alignment. Mark the top of the shaft and then point this mark toward the target (9 o clock for a right hander). That is the standard way of doing it for 90% of golfers.

Is this the same as "PURE"ing shafts? For pured shafts, the spine is installed at 12:00 for right handers.

Not so! The machine also aligns the neutral bend plane to the target. It then draws a line at 12 o clock (with the actual spine at 3 o clock) to make it easier for the person assembling the club to line it up.

I would be interested to see whether shafts that have been "FLOd" also line up with the spine found on a standard spine finder tool.

On PUREd steel shafts I have taken to pieces, NBP has always been at 1200 (right hand golfer).

Steel shafts that I have found the NBP/spine on and then FLO'd never seem to have the FLO "line" too far away from the NBP. Funnily enough today I was videoing spining and floing for a UK forum I go to. This is the NBP/FLO picture I took today:

I am getting back into the club building and golfing scene. I haven't kept up for the past few years due to heavy work loads. I understand what spining is, to a degree, but don't know how it affects the club. What is the difference between spining and NBP (what does this stand for)?

Have you ever looked at this with a graphite shaft. I just got a Graman ul440 and Graman claims the graphics are lined up with the optimal flex line. When I put this in my spine finder the soft part of the shaft is at 12 Oclock which lines up with Graman's graphics. However they have a sticker on the shaft which has a optimal flex line on it which is about 10 or 15 degrees toward the target from 12 Oclock, sounds exactly like the picture in your post.

Let's forget all the technobabble and mumbo jumbo and just think about the basic physics involved for a second. The NBP is the plane along which the shaft naturally wants to bend. That's the whole point of spine aligning in the first place.

Now surely you want the shaft to bend along this plane with the face of the club pointing directly to the target, right? So therefore the NBP should be positioned at 9 o clock for right handed golfers.

Everyone is entitled to align shafts as they want (I am not the clubmaker police), but it seems to me that 99% of golfers would want the NBP positioned to keep the clubface naturally square to the target at impact and hit longer straighter shots.

As always, just my 2 cents, so take it or leave it.

My Pure'd shafts have the neutral bending pointing at the target. The shaft is marked at 12 oclock for ease of reference. This is how the clubmaker explained it to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxgSyIjq_EU . Hi, I am new to the community. This link is to a video on youtube on the spining process using

JB's spining tool. From wathing this I gather that the soft side of the shaft goes in the 9:00 pos. and the hard side (spine) goes at 3:00.

I intend to get one of these tools and get busy! Sounds like it is worth it from what I have read in the forum.

I read some where that you could roll a shaft on a table and when it stopped the NBP would be on top. I tried this with a rifle flighted and a DGs300. Rolled them, maked the top, then rolled them again. The mark was on top again. Just to double check I switch to a different table. Mark still came out on top. Now I don't have a real spine finder to to see if this is accurate. If someone with a spin finder wants to check this out that would be great.

To answer the original question. NBP at 9 o' clock seems to be the standard.
