Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

A nice lady was next to me hitting at my old club and she started talking about this and that. At one point she was mentioning that she could hit her driver about 240 with good rool (while she was barely carrying 120 yards) when she dropped this on me "any good male player with a decent swing should be able to hit their 7 iron 210 yards"... I am reasonably sure she was unaware of what yardages actually were

A group of newcomers to the game were hacking away at a bucket of balls when suddenly the sounds turned to silence. I continued hitting little 3/4 wedges to the 100 yard pin. One of the group said to the others, "watch that old pro down at the end of the range." I looked around and realized they were talking about me.
NOW THTS FUNNY. Just goes to show its all a matter of perspective.

A lot more common than you would think. I commonly get confused for a D1 golfer. My 225yd bombs really impress the average beginners HAHA.

Who hit that shot ? Anybody see? A little fing thin.

I gots asked a few times if i was Paula Creamer. Had no ways of answering , so saids if i was , i woulds be hitting it worse. Guys say all weird things to me ands no idea how to answer , so i just gives thumb up ands ignore them now. One guy did keep calling me Rickey because of my orange outfit. I told him i woulds smash my 3 wood into his face if he called me it again. He responded with , *Rickey can be a girl's name.*

I saw a guy run toward a stall ands toss his bag mid strides onto the mat. He came back ands swung so hard , he woulds grunt , cheer , flex , etc after every swings ands look around for admirers. I was hittings it past him ands he swung ands grunted harder. After decent hits , he threw his club down ands made some odd noise ands would step in a circle flexing on the mat.

At a local course I play the #3 fairway is to the right of the range. A good 50 yards right of the range. Two guys were hitting a little ways down. I here one ask the other, "You tired?" he responds with, "No I want to hit the big dawg but I'm waiting on these guys to get out of my way"..... There was a foursome making there way down the #3 fairway.

Dunno if it qualifies as ridiculous, but I was at the range last week. It was pretty quiet. A guy walks in with his golf stuff, uses a stall 3 or 4 spots away from me and then proceeds to start doing a combination of a cough, throat clearing, a grunt and a sigh every 15-30 seconds. Warms up swinging two clubs and the unearthly sound gets louder.
He then starts hitting balls and after every ball he comments out loud about his shot, either using a few words, a hysterical laugh or an added grunt to his ongoing creepy noise thing. I had about 20 balls left but HAD to leave.

A man and his son, who was maybe ten years old, were on the two mats next to me.

The man proposed a $5 bet with the kid that he could hit it closer to the 100 yard marker. The kid proceeded to hit his ball sort of in the vicinity of the marker, but not very close- maybe 20 yards short of it. The man then unleashed a horrific slice/shank and missed by a good 50+ yards. I wouldn't have even known what target he was aiming at if I hadn't overheard the proposed bet. The kid's shot was CLEARLY closer to the marker.

The kid said something like "hey, I think I won!"... but the man said he wasn't so sure, he thought it was a tie, and they should try again. The man easily won the second time around.

Hey pal, nice job lying to your kid and then either (a) stealing $5 from him or (b) if you didn't make him pay, teaching him to welch on bets.

On my way out of the range, they were on the practice green and the guy was proposing another $5 bet with his kid. Nice.

The most ridiculus things I here are the snippits of advice that don't make sense...

For example:

"You left your hand out"
"You came off that one"
"You didn't stay under it"

...and so forth.

Wow, that is pretty sad.. He must lose bets all the time with his buddies, so makes up for it by ripping off his son. You should have went up to him on the putting green and told him 'I think you owe your kid a 10 spot by now' (or something along those lines). Or better yet, gave the kid a $5 and told him it was for winning that bet back at the 100 yard marker.

I was hitting just a 3 iron only for practice and really trying to work on making good contact so I wasn't taking full swings. I was practicing different drills. This guy comes over to me and says a big guy like you should be hitting it further. So I hit one to about 205 or so and say is that better? (I know, not up to WRX standards)

BTW...I'm 5'11, and he was about 5'6.

A guy today saids a SW shoulds go 130 yards. He took five ridiculous swings , all fat. The last one was some swing for fences power-less fade. Turns to friend ands says , *yea , it works.* It floated down just before 100 yard sign. Every swings was JB Holmes style backswings ands fall backwards *fade*. *Where is that on the course.* What angers me is such bad mechanics , yet muscled pretty good outs there on decent attempts. I hate unsolicited advice on the range from a stranger however. I encountered unsolicited advice from a fellow member during a club comp last weekend. I am off 18 and having lessons from Butch Harmon School of golf now so my mind is getting to a much better place. However i was constantly getting pointers re, weight distribution and club selection.

There are so many lol. I used to teach kids camps in the summer when i was in college. We used to spend 2-3hrs a day giving free clinics for the township center/disabled kids, adults and homeless kids in northern IL. Thinking about those i remember we were out on the chipping green hitting little shots and this guy with his buddy get out of a bentley. Grab brand new everything out of the trunk and start chipping. So about 5 mins goes by and neither one has hit the center of the club face. One guy turns and goes you need to push your right hand under to make them stick. Other guy turns and goes that works so much better (all the while he is basically laying sod over the ball). Then the best part is the sod layer goes just think this time next year i will be on tour making millions and you will be carrying my bag.
I busted out laughing.

Most ridiculous I always hear are from young guys who bring some hot babe to the driving range to "teach her" to play golf and the guys suck terribly at golf. These guys will always say "just watch me to see the right way to do it" and they are just terrible. This also led to one of the funniest things I heard on the range when I was there hitting the ball very very well and the guy trying to impress the chick obviously sucked and she asked him, "why don't you hit the ball like that man?" which she followed by saying, "I should get him to help me". The look the guy had when she said that. Dejection to the nth degree.

You should have gave her some tips. :derisive: Unless your married.

When people ask me to hit their driver to see if their slice is because of the club...

That would be when I would intentionally hook it so bad it goes out 150yds, then flys off 90* to the left

Had an incident of my own doing today. Well I have a pretty deep healing cut on my left index finger (knicked self with a knife at work). Went to the range to kill time and hit a few buckets. Everythings going good, finally grooving. Then I notice a group of ladies staring at me with horrified looks. Gets me all self conscious and I start looking for what they are looking at.

That cut had opened up while I was swinging, slowly soaking my glove in blood, and throwing spray. Horrid situation, there was blood spattered all along my swing plane(which was surprisingly consistent, passive brag). I quickly throw that glove away, superglue the cut back, and call it a day. Left some money for the pro for the mess I made.

There's no way I could have let that one go. I was at a range owned by a PGA pro and one of his students asked him how far he should be hutting his 7iron to which he responded " well most tour players hit a smooth 7 iron about 190 so that should be no problem for you." I had been watching the guy on the range and my temperature started to rise because I hate bad instructors who say things like that to someone that isn't going to sniff anything in that range.

Rge response?

" OK I'll just start swinging harder.".
