Just tried this into the net in my backyard with a 7-iron. Two words: pa-pow. Backswing stuff didn't change too much for me because I'm pretty compact already. The downswing though, was unreal. So many thoughts aimed a preventing the flip are passive - hold the angle, lead with the hips, etc etc. Maybe all of that was causing my arms to lag behind the turn. This more active thought led to really solid, powerful impact, carried right through to a nice finish. Can't wait to get to the range and check out real ball flight.

Thanks for answering Monte. Sorry I if misunderstand the term but I thought hands controlled pivot was the body reacting to the movement of the hands. So I'm thinking if you create more space a by product of the cast intent would it not be true?

Or are we just using the same pivot but more synced up with a faster arm speed?

Bingo. The purpose of this drill, as I said in the video, is to get the arms linked up better so the hands are less active at impact.

Ok. After reading Monte comments about speeding up the right arm saving my short game all summer seeing this video was like Christmas morning for me. My full swing has no depth and is inside and across the line. This afternoon I was all alone on the course with plenty of balls to hit. The shorter backswing was a little tough for me to get used to. I was about two clubs shorter. I was used to the throw away move so I had no trouble with that. After hitting balls into greens for over a hour using this move I figured I would try some bunker shots. I had a revelation in the bunker that enlightened the move. It felt like i was throwing the weight of the club with my right fore finger at the ball. This gave me perfect ball flight, thin divots, and most of my distance back. This could just work for me.

I hit about 30 balls today doing just this and the results were great with irons, but driver seems to need something extra coming through impact or my body would slide towards the target - I hit a lot of pull draws while using the feels with driver. Any thought on driver since the ball is teed and much more forward? Maybe the drill is just for irons?

Cant believe how slow my arm swing had gotten trying to hold the angle by not releasing the forearm or wrist. Everyone says the release will just happen if you hold on long enough. That may be true but with no arm speed and a lot of tension it doesn't do much good.

Yes, I found the same. The lower body easily got out of sync with driver. I would feel a horrible slide toward the target on some driver swings. I figured because the ball is so far forward and teed up the casting portion needs more lower body turn to hit the ball straight. I basically ended up just hitting normal styled drivers, but for irons the ideas are great.

I like this... basically the theory is, if the backswing sequence is correct (connected) you'd have a tough time making a bad swing

Actively use this feel with shorter and maybe mid clubs and the multiple reps will passively work this feel into your longer clubs.

Thanks Monte. Still need to get a video uploaded to do a lesson with you! Too busy squeezing in rounds of golf before the snow hits lol but its a damn good feeling hitting it further in 5 degree weather than in 30 plus... I always had little wrist set but even in practice swings I can see how much shaft lean an early wrist causes at impact

Great question and answer. I think this is really important with this drill. At the top, your left hip is naturally closer to the target than your left shoulder and hands. So coming down, your left hip will naturally be leading and be out front and it's vital to speed up the arms and hands and get them to catch up with the left hip. The act of of speeding up the hands from the top reduces their speed coming into impact. This slight slowdown of the hands at impact gets them synched with the left hip and you go through the strike with a corporate, controlled move, everything in lockstep. Monte, does this go along with your thinking on this?

Edit: The difference is Monte is saying cast from the top, get it moving as soon as you can. Of course, we're predisposed to do it just the opposite. Holding the lag actually slows down the arms and hands coming through, the thought of casting early and often speeds everything up.

I don't know how others see this, but I just think this dichotomy is not helpful. The whole system, hands, arms, pivot all have to work together. Sometimes it takes focus on the hands, others on the pivot or arms. But that's just me.

Indoors, so only able to try out the backswing feel. I like it. Lately I've been trying to focus on keeping a straighter right arm at the start so I don't let it get behind me. Hard to do though. Focusing purely on the wrist c0ck gets me in a good position there that I wouldn't expect.

Monte, would you say you don't need to think about lift when you have a later turn and aggressive wrist c0ck the up part of the swing is automatic and the club stays in front of you much easier?
