Well done RR, but the definition still refers to video "gaming". :-)

Still a verb. :) Application is not dependent. ;)

I was about to ask the same thing RR. :-)

You DO have a point and I suppose technically one could apply it to a golf club, but the spirit of the definition applies to the world of video gaming. Now do you really want to deprive those nice folks of that word by applying it to golf? :-)
How crazy is it the a "gaming" term could be retrofitted to Golf, a game that precedes "gaming" by 100 years?

That's gotta create some kind of warp in the time space continuum.

To be honest though, I kinda like some of these types of terms. It may sound condescending but it gives me immediate referential insight to the person/parties who use them. Particularly when in context of 'non' face to face interaction such as the 'net. It's hard enough to get a feel for a person's character and certain other base levels so choice of vocabulary, syntax and composition are about all we have.

:)

One's chosen vernacular is only an indication of generation and pop culture... Not character.... Homie....

I think how one presents themselves, carries an argument or debate, formulates position, perspective and/or point of view then constructs a physical representation...even in a limited form on the internet, can speak volumes.

You may have to be able to read between the lines though. ;)

That's a very good insight RR. Besides language however, the tenor of how that language is used is a good reference point as well. Is the individual condescending? Vitriolic? Even-tempered? Arrogant? And the like. Even then language is only one way to communicate. As you reference a face-to-face interaction can communicate much more in addition to the words used in that interaction.
Absolutely. Additionally I think we as humans, have an innate desire to 'understand' the meaning behind most things, often time reading into things tatt may not actually be there or applying our own perspective logic to it in order for it to comply with our own sensibilities.

Thus being the big caveat trying to achieve this in a text only context and the primary reason most 'discussions' tend to reach terminal velocity in record time.

So Sean do you know if you will still be gaming those golf clubs in your signature in 2014?

While a horrible way to use 'gaming' it's becoming more and more accepted. It sucks I agree!

I really miss 'golfing'. My 'low-spin bomber' rests against the kitchen table. The bastxxx taunts me: "so you think you can hit the ball farther than 230 yards do you?" I wish I could 'score' a beautiful day so I could prove this 44" 'monster' wrong.

Sean, while I agree with you, I must tell you that my own crusade for saving my own language (German in that case), suffered a crushing defeat a few weeks ago, when I was discussing similar topics with the husband of a good friend. He is a professor for the history of the German language at the University of Vienna. His only reaction to my rants and to those of his wife (who has been a German teacher all her adult life) was simply this:
"Language changes, get over it."
I still don't. Get over it, that is.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I always find these three distinct layers of English funny. One could express almost exactly the same thing in three completely different sentences while using either only words with Anglo-Saxon (Old German) roots, with only Old French roots or with only Latin roots.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

It doesn't matter what those dictionaries define the word as. Our sub-culture of golf has adopted the term to be defined as a golf club currently in the bag for use, or the golf club one would use as their first choice. Words in themselves only have meaning when people give it to them. Being from California, I know what someone means when they say they are, "heading out to shred some gnar." Obviously this sentence means absolutely nothing to a vast amount of people, but to a certain sub-culture of our society it means something very specific. It's the same with the term "gaming". Most non-golfers probably would have no clue what you were talking about, but use the term in a conversation with your Sunday foursome and I'm sure the whole group would know exactly what you're talking about.
Actually most golfers would look at you funny if you asked what they were "gaming". They might eventually catch on but its not that common of a term except amongst "players" and "wannabe's". Those in between ,for the most part, dont use the term.

I believe I am one of three people out of the grand total of about 95 million native German speakers who exclusively uses the word "mobiltelefon" for the funny device, which for some reason nobody can explain, is called "handy" by all the others here.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I personally believe that U.S. golfers are unable to gaming so because, uh, some golfers out there in our nation don't have maps, and uh, I believe that our golf like such as in South Africa and uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and I believe that gaming gamers should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., er should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries gamers, so we will be able to build up our future gaming gamers for our children
