Making a wedge raw

rbhan12

Recommended Posts

hey all,

I'm having some trouble making my wedge raw. I'm trying to use coke and a Nike VR Forged wedge (I believe it is the 2011 or 2012 model), so I put the wedge in a glass of coke and left it there overnight. I've heard that this is a solid method to make the wedge raw, so when I came back in the morning I expected that nice deep musty blueish color. To my surprise, nothing, wedge looked exactly the same except now it smells like coke! Anybody have some advice?

If it is chrome plated coke will do nothing
[/quote]

This is accurate. Unless you have the black oxide finish, the coke bath just makes your club sugary.

damn! explains a lot. any help as far as removing chrome? is it worth the trouble? I don't really have a preference for it but I'm on winter break and figured why not do something.

I think you'd be better off buying a cheap raw wedge--not worth it once you pay to have the plating stripped and you figure out how much weight you have to add back.

Removing chrome requires some chemicals that you may not want to mess with. Hydrchloric acid comes to mind... Nasty stuff. I'm not even sure where you buy it. You may also want to buy and alkaline rinse for after you use the HCI. Otherwise the acid may remain on the wedge and continue to eat it. I have heard that Muriatic Acid will work as well (never tried it). You can buy that at hardward stores. I used muriatic acid on a raw wedge to remove rust. It worked well, but you will want MASSIVE air circulation. That stuff stinks! You may want to experiment on a wedge/iron you don't care about first... good luck!

Find a local plater who can do it properly and safely.

I called a local chrome plating shop and they said they would strip the chrome from my wedge heads for $10/club. In order to chrome something you have to remove the old chrome so they will have experience in this process.

How many swingweight points do you lose from stripping chrome? Something to think about before doing.
