Hogan's bent/soft left arm at address

Recommended Posts

I understand Hogan may have bent his left arm at address due to pain/accident. Nevertheless, can anyone provide some insight into the dynamics of the left arm on the backswing, as it straightens?

I assume the answer is that extensor action stretches is out during the backswing, but to me, this seems like the swing radius would then change (increase) and lead to inconsistency if you wanted to copy.

Just look at the description of the waggle in 5L and the drawing that goes with it.

Some of the set up positions and Ravielli illustrations in the book are based on poses and not actually what Hogan did or looked like. Go figure.

Drew, can you point out which ones on which page?

The Leadbetter (cool name) book has the original pictures used for the drawings and they're nearly identical, no?

Yes, the posed ones are shown (and easy to spot) in the Leadbetter book,

This is part of the issue I had with the Ledbetter book. I wasn't evident that he understood which were posed, which weren't and which were used to demonstrate the proper vs. improper technique!

The huge issue I had with the book was the "Don't do it Hogan's way, do it my way" mantra that permeates the entire book. It's clear that Ledbetter understood some Hogan pieces and touched on some key things that no other Hogan book had before, but it's also clear (to me at least) that he didn't understand how neatly all of those pieces fit together. The book was nice for the never before seen pictures, but that was about it, IMO.

Re Hogan posing for pictures, I've always wondered ever since I read the Jody Vasquez book that Hogan may have had a bigger cup in his L wrist in poses/pictures because he was posing for the camera. You could never pose at the top of the BS with a flat L wrist in a comfortable fashion. Very inconvenient, especially with a pitch elbow like Hogan.

Been thinking about the Hogan soft left arm again. Confusing to me that if the L arm sets up soft and bent, the length of the left arm+club gets longer during the swing. This could bring shanks into play for amateurs...unless you made up for that extra length by moving your L shoulder exactly that much further away from the ball on the way to impact.

In my humble opinion theres no reason to extend the left arm at address. The argument for shanking totally breaks down because the shoulders will be slightly open at impact thus the left shoulder wil be further from the ball than it was at address. So to my way of seeing it naturally relaxed at address is a. repeatable and b. serves a purpose.

See ball hit ball

This is a great topic. Don't know how I missed it!

Still thinking about it...more about what I want to do and less about Hogan...but my latest thoughts:
-Control swing radius with bent (and torqued) right arm
-Left arm is more relaxed and can start bent
-Since impact=open shoulder, address=square shoulders...you may NEED it bent at address actually...or more bent than you're used to
-Early backswing straightens left arm (resistance from intention of trying not to turn L shoulder back) where it remains until impact
-R-arm-in-control backswing feel
Thanks for the input for the general observation of Hogan's bent L arm at address everyone.
