Augusta accommodation, Masters week

SJP1

Recommended Posts

I'm travelling from overseas to the 2014 Masters. I'll be there all week, Monday to Sunday.

I'm trying to track down remotely reasonably-priced accommodation - and I don't mind roughing it for a week.

Does anyone have any advice for a first-time visitor?

augusta is an awful town 51 weeks of the year. there are a lot of very dangerous places in the city. be careful about "roughing it." their definition of rough might get you killed.

Bit of an exaggeration, but, I've heard Augusta does have some rough areas. Might be better off going a little out of town for accommodations, or spend money to rent a house near the club. A lot of rooms will already be booked, so don't wait, you're already late to the party. At this point, you might have to be an hour away.

Augusta has more than a few rough areas. If you don't already have reservations, I'll wish you good luck finding them in Augusta. Best bet will be to look outside of Augusta and close enough where you're still able to make a reasonable drive. There are places within an hour that would be very doable.

Thats what I did when I went 2 years ago...the area isn't the greatest but I never felt unsafe by any means. Hotels in the area are most likely going to be booked by now so like others have said, you may have to go a little bit out of town.

Can anyone elaborate on the "rough" areas of Augusta?

Don't know specifics, never been there, just heard/read there a number of bad/rough areas. Apparently, with the exception of the club and a few neighborhoods near it, Augusta is a friggin' dump. That's the reason there are so few hotel rooms, only one week a year when there is any demand.

[/quote]Assuming you will have access to a car, check out the Masters Inn in Columbia,SC Right near I-20 and a direct drive to Augusta/Washington Rd. Book directly with the Masters Inn for best rate.

East Augusta is where the dilapidated and high crime area is. Project housing and all that. If you get off of Broad Street, you're in a bad neighborhood.

South Augusta has some ghetto patches. The area centric to Fort Gordon are the best areas here.

West Augusta is probably your best bet (it's also the part the course falls in). Everywhere except for the end of Washington Rd. is a pretty nice area. The tip end is ghetto. But you'll find more of your nicer shopping, dining, etc in this area.

North Augusta is right across the state line in South Carolina and is a fine area as well. As usual, the further you get from the water (this would be the Savannah River in this case) the worse it gets.

As far as places to stay and be fairly close and still in a nice area with good dining and shopping? Martinez, Evans , and Grovetown are fine choices.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I've found an apartment in North Augusta, a 20-minute walk from the course, at $1000 for 8 days which seems an excellent deal.
