Chrome+ issues

G_M_T

Recommended Posts

I know there are quite a few chrome+ users on here. I am wondering if anyone else is having the same durability problems that I am? I have had several cut right through the cover, many more than any other modern ball I've played. I also have had a few that cut only one dimple, but all the way through the cover. I have shown them to several people, and nobody has ever seen it before. This has happened to balls from different boxes and even both colors.

I really like the way this ball performs, but the durability is bothersome.

Yeah, I am not without blame in that department..... But when I've bladed other balls, I don't get the cut all the way through. And the single dimple tear is something I've never seen

Oh I'm with you on this... I haven't made smiley faces on balls like this in years. Funny thing is they don't seem to scuff much just cut.

I love the Chrome+ performance and feel, but I also have issues with durability.

Ironically, I switched this year to the Chrome+ from the Hex Black for the same reason. I had three Hex Blacks that were cut. That has yet to happen with the Chrome+

I don't remember the last time I saw a cut ball that was not balata.

The chrome was my go to ball this summer. That's all I played. I love the performace of the chrome and the plus during the hot summer when the body is loose and my scorecard has lots of pars, 3 or 4 birds, an eagle and no doubles. They are spin machines when hitting the green. Had a couple roll back 15 feet. However, I have noticed that exact dimple problem that GMT is referring to.

The ball can get better.

No, mostly because it was just so strange to me. I hadn't ever cut through the cover of a urethane ball. To do it as regularly as I have been, seemed like it had to be something that I was responsible for (bladed wedge).

Last time I put a true smile on a ball I was using a Titleist Tour Balata! I play the Chrome, and I can say that I have seen the same odd tear on a single dimple, but it was due to very poor contact. In general I do not have any issues with the ball, unless I cart path it.

Yep--what the others said, especially the cart path damage for me. It's a great ball. For a close alternative. try the Nike 20Xi.

LOL about the Tour Balata--back in the day!

I think that's inherent to hex dimples. I've been playing callaway balls off and on for years and ive had this happen several times back as far as the i(s)
[/quote]

I disagree with this... I've played many rounds with the ix, i(s), i(z) iS, iZ, hex black, and chrome+ and have never had a Callaway ball cut through the cover. Scuffs from wedges and road rash from cart paths for sure, but never have I seen the inside of the ball.

I have found the Chrome+ yellow discolors faster than the Srixon Z-Star series in yellow. Also, in my opinion the Chrome+ are not as durable over-all as the Srixons.

I don't know what it is, but the Srixons seem to hide the nicks, scratches, cuts, etc that are the results of normal play.

I had 3 chrome plus balls crack this weekend and 1 nike 20xi-x. I have been testing balls and like these 2, but I will stop buying them. I have never had this happen before, so I will stick with what works.

Same issues here, and I have been playing the + exclusively for the distance and control. I have has smileys and severe cuts including single dimples. A good wedge will grind these up on one swing with multiple cuts from groove contact.

Not a durable ball, but a great performer. Similar durability to Pro V1. $29.00 at times though.

No real durability issues here, looove this ball. If you thin it bad, any ball is going to cut or gill. that said my miss is thin but I have not seen extensive damage to the cover on my Chrome+, more so on the hex black.

The Chrome+ is my ball of choice. I have had a couple get a small cut like that too. But a couple out of however many dozen I bought last year doesn't really bother me. Besides, it didn't seem to affect playability. As long as they are around $30 a dozen, I will keep playing them.

No issues here unless I blade it badly. Can't expect callaway to give us a ball with a soft spiny cover like that and demand somehow it's hard and tough to hold up to a bladed full wedge... I have no issues with skinning these like the 20xi or hex black. To me that's a bigger issue. A ball that gets roughed up on well hit shots.

Only issue I've had is sometimes out of bunker can actually embed some fine sand in the cover, but for the price and overall performance, I can live with it.

I only play one round with a given ball anyway, if you expect to play numerous rounds with a ball, buy some RockFlites.

I've had this same problem with Chrome+ and hex black. I've torn up some of these on drives. In posted a while back where on my home course hole 1 (par 5) I hit a drive right down middle, 3 wood on the green, pick ball up, and its split - was brand new right out of box. I have since returned all unused callaway balls. I liked them a lot, but just had horrible problems with durability.

I can remember the amount of work you could put on the balatas, and that was back when the highest loft wedge was 56 and grooves weren't sharp. I can only imagine the amount of backspin you could get from a 58 mac daddy wedge. I have still not found a modern ball that comes close to a balata around the green or off the putter. I often wonder what scores I could shoot if you could replace your ball with a balata when you got near the green.
