Your favorite butter knife!

Recommended Posts

I got back into the game a few months back after being away for a loooong time and went searching for a new 1 iron after dealing with a windy day. I was going to get a PING Eye 2, but stumbled over a mention of the Tommy Armour 845s Heater (14º). I wasn't a fan of TA clubs because of the offset (same with the PINGs) being a blade player, but once I found out the TA Heater had minimal offset I sprung for one. If I hit a stinger with it I get a flight of less than 20 feet off the ground that flies around 200-210 then rolls and rolls and rolls..... I can still hit it high though with a normal swing. It is a good club to have in the bag for shorter courses or windy days.

Fg17 one iron almost always in the bag. Hit it pure and its like the ball just got out of the way, head so small you can hardly see it sometimes. It demands you be at peace with yourself before you swing, not have a head full of swing thoughts. But, hitting it right, and hard is just about the best feeling to be had in golf. If it could cook, id marry it

Oh: and there's a label on the shaft that reads, "the truth". :)

Took my whole set to the shop to have my lofts and lies measured 3/2/17. Ended up building an extension on the gauge with the pro to be able to measure the 1. How does 16° of loft grab you? Lol

Dunlop Ballesteros #1 456/999 (or something like that, too lazy to get up and check).

Deuces Paradise - Miz TN87, Dunlop DP201, Bridgestone Proisme, Ping eye2 Stainless and Copper

Was hitting the DP201 last week at the range, lacing 220 yard fades and draws. Beautiful feel and sound.

I see some one has brought this old post back. My how things change in a few years. I still have all my previous mentioned 1 irons but ended up with a new toy last year. My gracious fellow WRXer Peanuts Daddy from over on the Clubhouse Grille section of the 19th hole sent me a brand new never hit 99 Hogan Apex 2 iron head. I promptly shafted it with an new un tipped S-300 and the "Canadian Special" was born. I can hit some roll out rockets with that thing. It is switched around rotating out with the 5 wood depends on the course and the wind. I always carry it in my 7 or 8 vintage club walking bag. Lately experimenting with different drivers it has gotten me out of quite a few pickles. It has also been windy as heck down here lately so it is quite useful.

I have never seen of heard of those before now. By the pics you posted and looking at the top line I will say it qualifies as a butter knife

A little bit off topic, but I get a kick out of those who boast about playing blades. The "blades" of today would have been considered game improvement irons back in the day. I have hit a number of today's blades and didn't understand what the big deal was...I didn't find them that hard to hit. I think the mystique surrounding them is a bit overstated. The clubs you gentleman are referencing are true blades.

Driving iron on the left, cleek on the right. Mincing.

Really don't use a wood very often with either of these in the bag. Just put it in there because it is pretty and bag looks silly without it.

That topline looks like it's been finished on a whetstone.

It's not all about the score.

Please someone find the old Callaway Big Bertha one iron. Monster. Top edge as wide as all of my irons put together.

I used some Nike Slingshots at a resort once. Like a bag full of drivers, the seven iron I hit from 160 on the first was still going up as it went past the flag. Uncontrollable 220 yard five irons, thought the one iron would be incredible. Didn't even make one. No wonder they decided not to bother with clubs any more.

This here thread needs a bumpin' !

I don't play this club very often, but it's a great conversation piece in a scramble. I let anyone have a go at it if they want, and invariably they overswing and get the expected result. It's a regular shaft so it demands not only good contact but a smooth action as well. The odd person pures it though and the reaction is a beautiful thing to see.

And yes - it works pretty good on bread too. Lol

I used to collect 1-irons. It started when I was playing a classic Wilson Staff 1958 DynaPower set of irons in the 1970s.

Fortunately, I was able to find a '58 DynaPower 1-iron.

Quite a few collected over the years, but the highlights must be the personal clubs of :

- Tour player George Burns - MacGregor and Palmer 1-irons

- Tom Weiskof - MacGregor 1-iron

- Jack Nicklaus - MacGregor 1- iron (Acquired from his club maker Jack Wulcotte)

I'm post some pictures.

Hard to believe that anyone would have ever hit one any better than Nicklaus or Weiskopf.
