The Single Malt Scotch Thread

Coming off of a Jura 10 and now working on a bottle of Glenmorangie Original, I've concluded I'm a Speyside guy. I feel like there's something wrong with me that I'm just haven't really enjoyed these last two bottles. But that's part of the adventure, I guess.

I've got a bottle of JW Gold label that was given as a gift that I've got to blast through before I can move on to my next experiment.

whistlepig - no idea, but it sounds good. in my limited experience with them, i'm hit or miss with rye whiskeys. maybe the bourbon thread will have more knowledgeable folks?

the $628,000 scotch on the other hand... i'm guessing it's an investment. in 10 years times, i bet it sells for over a million. :)

last week, i tried my first lowland scotch. triple distilled auschentoshan12. very smooth and an interesting finish, in a good way. and at $40, i would recommend it.

after kinda enjoying cutty sark a couple weeks ago, i'm going to try truman's recommendation from a couple posts ago: the famous grouse. will report back with my experience.

The whistlepig is excellent for a rye! (rye is not my favorite). But it's actually a Canadian Whiskey.

I just bought a bottle of Lagavulin 16. What is the best way to drink it? Straight a little water or a little ice?
Excellent choice! I'd go with one medium-sized cube for the first one.

Can't wait to crack into it. Going to the desert next weekend to drive some fast cars, shoot some rifles and drink some scotch around the fire ball!

Busted into it, could not wait. Had a small reason to celebrate and took advantage of it. Love the smokey, nutty flavor.

Neat, on the rock(s), or with a drip of water?

Lag16 is the quintessential scotch, to me. Glad you are enjoying it!
I tried a few sips with no ice at first and then I just did like 3 1"1" cubes.

Have you ever made any drinks with a good Single Malt, like a Rusty Nail?

Link to comment

I had my first rusty nail approximately 10 years ago. Only time ive ever enjoyed a jonnie walker red. ;)

Not many since then. Good drink though. Lit me up something fierce.

Edit: for whatever reason, I think it's a waste to use a good single malt in a mixed drink. That's what blended scotches are for. Just my opinion.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking, but I figured something simple like that would be okay. I enjoyed my first glass, just afraid that this little hobby could get expensive and dangerous.

I think I am going to exchange the Bottle of Whistlepig for another single malt. What do you recommend next?

Ha! No doubt, scotch can get to be a pricey hobby.

To figure out what scotch you like best, I suggest you try different single malts from all the different regions.

Here's my list of 'go to' scotches:

Islay: lagavulin 16

Lowlands: auchentoshan 12 (only lowland I've had so far... Triple distilled deliciousness).

Highlands: largest area, so the most varied. Clynelish and Oban are great choices.

Speyside: balvenie Caribbean Cask. Finished in old rum casks. Awesome. More typical for the region: glenlivet12, glenmorainge12, macallan 15.

Islands: disputed as a separate region, normally considered part of the highlands. Different from an islay, which is a specific island. Two of my favorite scotches are from here: highland park and talisker.

Campbeltown: another region, but I've never had a scotch from there, so I can't comment on it. :(

If I were recommending a single malt scotch to a relatively new scotch drinker on a budget, my current list would look something like this:
- balvenie carribbean cask
- glenlivet 12 (definitely not the French oak 15)
- clynelish 14
- cardhu 12
- highland park 12
- auchentishan 12
- macallan 12
- talisker 12
- lagavulin16

Goes from sweeter to smokey brine. Cardhu and clynelish should probably be reversed though. I'm on my phone, so no chance I retype that.

Hope this helps! Cheers!

This thread is another example of why I love GolfWRX. I haven't been very active here since the end of the golf season, but yesterday I decided I wanted to give Scotch a try and knew there had to be a thread on The 19th Hole. For some odd reason I trust opinions here more than some random internet Scotch forum. :)
Went out and bought a bottle of Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or last night and couldn't have been happier. Looking forward to another tonight. :)

I love Highland Park.

The 12 is great, but the 15 is perfect. The 18 taste very good but not much better than the 15.

Scratch, it depends, but usually no. Older tends to mean smoother, with a subtler finish. The level of smoke is determined during the distillation process/region and is often stronger in younger scotches. I think.

One thing I know for sure: Older definitely means more expensive.

Stopped by the packie on the way home from work to get my powerball tix and took a gander at what they had out... and my eye was drawn to the Balvenie 12 doublewood. Why? It was on sale for $39. Just could not pass it up. :) Very light and easy. Nicely sweet over the tongue.

Also, for xmas, my wife got me a bottle of the 18yr Yamazaki. If you have the means, I highly suggest you don't pass it up. I mean, my regular drink is the Yamazaki 12. However, the 18 is the Hans Grueber.

Must be something in the air: aberlour 12 for me as well. Not yet sure if I'm a fan of the sherry cask finish.

Also tried the famous grouse. Meh. Not for me. If I'm going to drink an economic blend, it'll be JWB, or cutty on the rocks.

I'm having my second date with Lagavulin 16 now.

How much do you guys normally pour? One shot worth?
I start light (1 shot-ish) and once I'm warmed up, the pours start to get longer. Needless to say, after 3 glasses, it's highway to the danger zone!
