We had to respond in reference to an "MVC" - motor vehicle collision.

Arriving on scene I reported in; "On scene, two vehicles with moderate damage. All occupants out of their vehicles."

One vehicle was sitting at a light and the other slammed into the rear end.

First the good news:

Noone was injured or killed and everyone was fully insured.

But the bad news:

The vehicle struck in the rear was driven by a golfer on his way to the range. In his trunk was his brand new AP-2 irons.

I am not allowed to take photos on scenes but suffice it to say he will be replacing that set of irons now. As a fellow golfer all I could say was "wow" as he pulled them out of what was left of his trunk. Here's hoping his insurance co-pay isn't too steep and they (State Farm) don't balk at hooking him up as soon as possible. His car did its job and the trunk crushed inward absorbing the kinetic energy. Unfortunately his irons were a part of that whole process.

Sometimes the tragedies I witness in this line of work are too much to bear......

Were there any survivors from the bag?
If only they been in a bag. Like a car seat for kids or a seat belt for adults, a bag would have afforded those irons at least some chance at survival. But alas he had just picked them up and they were in their open box in the trunk. He had inspected them and taken delivery. And was on his way to the range where I assume he would have then placed them into the bag. The clubs in the bag all survived. (Putter, woods, and wedges) But from what I could tell the box got bent on impact as did ALL of the contents.

Funny thing was he was saying "I almost drove the SUV today. Maybe if I had been in it....."

I hate to ruin a somewhat funny thread, but this just reminded me so much of what happened to a friend of mine two weekends ago. He too is a paramedic. He was the first on the scene of a head on collision. He found his wife and 6 year old daughter were the victims. Both passed away at the ER an hour or so after he found them. I feel so bad for the guy. I can't imagine the nightmares he will endure the rest of his life. Sad, very sad.

Did he sing the jingle and did J.K. Simmons show up with a new set of AP2's?

Edit: Well, that sort of sucks to follow that post.

I have something truly witty to state, but can't seem to type it after reading Hstead's post.

Medic, thankfully we are here to complain about the weather, the price of sandwiches at Riviera, and the high cost of sunscreen, as the alternative is incredibly sobering.

Well you are.

With that said you did give us a bit of needed perspective. As PD said the snow, cold and expensive sandwiches are all pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things

I read this on one of the firefighter websites. So sad. Its hard enough seeing people you have never met in bad situations, so I couldn't imagine what this guy went through.

I'm a career firefighter with 12 years on the job and 8 years on the tech rescue team. We respond to a vast majority of MVAs in the city and I have seen some gruesome accidents. But none as gruesome as a the one in the OP.

I don't think making the insurance claim is the right call, unless it gets coded as comprehensive. If this gets coded as collision, it will likely count as a claim and lead to an eventual rate increase for the insured. All for a $200-$300 reshaft.

Not worth it.
Sounds like he was hit in the rear end. 95% chance the other driver's insurance will be picking up the new club tab...

If he was at fault, his likely only recourse would be him home owners policy...at which point the reshaft would probably be the way to go.

This is why my clubs always go in the front seat, belted in and the wife rides in the back.

Actually, the insurance company that will be notified is the driver who rearended the AP2s. And there is no deductible as it is a property liability claim. Only if the other person had no insurance would his insurance come into play, and even then they would be filed against his homeowners policy.

That truly tragic post does put it into perspective. I started in 1982 and in that time have seen some horrific accidents. To be honest the "shock and awe" along with the irony of the whole thing made me laugh a little. This does not happen too often. As the other FF/PM can attest most of what we deal with centers on the true tragedies of others. Sincere condolences to the gentleman who lost his loved ones. Words always escape me in such situations - sadly it would not matter anyway because nothing anyone could say could possibly come close to filling the void that has been created in his life.

As for the poor guy with the irons - I would imagine re-shafting is the way he would go. I didn't stick around the scene long enough to ask him his plans.
