SI Golf Plus article on Carlsbad

Great article. I tried to find if it was posted online and couldn't find it. Maybe someone else will. It went into the history of how Carlsbad became the golf manufacturer of the world and the different styles of the companies and the images they present. What I found interesting was that the companies frequent certain restaurants so often that they sort of become "hangouts" for certain companies and thus their "turf." Mark King of Taylormade was quoted as saying if someone from another OEM shows up at the Taylormade hang out, he "gets in their ear" about it. They mentioned that the Callaway guys sometimes have meetings at In-N-Out and Harry was quoted as saying that they get some good work done there, haha. I find that hard to believe. After a 3x3, I need a nap. The article also mentions GolfWRX and how Callaway is active on it. A cool read if you can get your hands on it.

Agree...I read it too. Interesting how industries group geographically. Good stuff.

As an aside, I found that issue to be good. Generally I find the special insert kind of issues to be mostly ads, with not much quality content. I enjoyed this one.

If you have ever spent time in Carlsbad, it is not hard to figure out why people put golf companies there. We would all live there if we could afford it.

I lived one town over (San Marcos) for eight years before leaving to go to college, and it's an incredible area weather-wise. Nothing beats the weather. It is my career goal to come back after college and work for one of the OEMs

It would be great to find that article, would love to read it. I have busines out in that area next month. Place I am visiting is very close to the Titliest facilicty in Oceanside.

When I was out there last year I was surprised at how close the companies really are (geographically).

Our escort from TMAG (I won't embarrass him/her) was taking us across the street from the office to The Kingdom and a car came barreling down the street. He/she just laughed and said "oh that's just someone from Callaway. They are always trying to run us over." Now I guess they have to watch for Harry driving the tank down the hill.

The comment about watching out who is sitting around you at lunch is true. Another person there said they look all around before choosing s seat.

It's a really neat town, I'd love to work/live there.

A lot of hype in that story and a lot of solid facts.

Speaking from 1st hand experience of growing up in the area, being the golf professional at La Costa from 1980 - 1992 (Mark King was my Taylor-Made sales rep then), dealing with Eli Callaway, Jim Flood and Tom Crow. Saw a lot of the early grow in these companies.

Not a bad time to be in the golf industry in SoCal. Don't miss living the San Diego County at all. Last place I'd choose to live. Nice to visit a few times a year.
