Hoping to create a monster!

I took my 2.5yr old son to the golf course for the first time today.

I have an afternoon type golf pass for a local executive course. I was able to play 9 on my own before my wife and son met up with me to play a couple of holes, after the course died off.

We had a great time. I helped the little guy hit a few down the fairway/off the tee, and he was loving it. On the first hole after my wife chipped on, he ran up, grabbed the ball and dropped it in the hole. He was having a blast.

I fact, on the ride home the little guy fell asleep. When he woke up, the first words out his mouth was "go golfing daddy?"

In reference to Kadin's topic, I do hope I have created a monster as well!

Fantastic! I have an almost 3 year old. I'm dying to get him out to the local par 3 with me! Seeing as it was raining sideways with incredible wind, I guess I'll wait until spring/summer.

That's great! My little guy turns 2 this week and loves daddy's golf clubs. He is pretty good at hitting a ball too. He likes to use them left handed though :)

I can't wait until he can go with me.

Thanks for all the kind words.

The wife was a little worried about how it would go. We could have done more but we were walking, and after 3 holes it gets pretty far from the clubhouse and I really didn't want to carry the little guy that far :-). I'd like to try it with a cart one if these times too and see how it goes.

After a few times of swinging with the little guy he started to get the idea some but it's going to take quite a while before we can really get into that aspect of it.

Taking him out there is definitely something I wouldn't do when the course has a lot of people on it, nor if I was even remotely interested in actually playing golf. It was so much fun though and can't wait to get out there again with him (and the wife too. It was her first time on the course in about 6-7 years!)

Always keep it "fun" not a "lesson", and he'll love the game as much as you do.
[/quote]

Yea thats the trick there. Balancing learning about the game and having fun. (Gotta make the same balance with the wife!). Of course I couldnt wait for the first day to get him out on the course, now I cant wait for the day he can actually play a little! All in good time of course, a few more trips like this one are next on the list though. One of these times I want to try and get the three of us on a cart and try to get through 9 holes. Im thinking that the fun of riding in the cart and "driving" it might keep his interest and fun levels up enough to stay out a little longer. The walking was nice too though cause it tired him right out!

Looks like everyone had a ball!

The little monster at home is just hitting a year and a half now. Has her only plastic putter and driver so she'll stop trying to steal mine and bash the cat with them (50/50 on it working on any given day heh). We'll see if she gets a taste for it at all, but I entirely admit I hope when she's 3ish I can bring her with me to the putting green. Actually, so is the Mrs. She wants the time to herself with us out of the house heh.

Lol! Yea the cat and dogs get chased through the house with his clubs for sure!

I was amazed at how excited my little guy got about going golfing with me. Im always taking some practice swings in the back yard or hitting little chips out there. Recently ive also started to putt in the house a bit and he has really taken a liking to it. At this point about half the time he swings the club at the ball and the other half picks it up and throws it, but we are making progress!

I am hoping about the time he turns 3 ill be able to actually have him hit a few putts and maybe take an actual swing at the ball.

Only when your other half stops thinking, "you're dashing", can you start to second guess yourself.

No doubt, Duffner's wife sees him as "dashing"!.................... We see a great golfer :-)

My golfing daughter is 21. She still wants to know, "when are we going golfing?" My tennis playing daughter is still in high school, plays with my wife mostly, but I love it when she asks me to go play.

Treasure the moments shared in any of your kids' activities.

Both are endlessly told they look like their mother. Have to say, it doesn't do much for the old self esteem when you hear it all the time. ;-)

Lucky, for sure.

But, I still ask my dad if he wants to go play. Golf has been a great game for us all to share.

  • 5 weeks later...

I know its been awhile since Ive posted in this thread but it needs a little update.

It seems as though I might be creating a different monster than the one I intended. I have gotten the family out twice more since the start of this thread for 9 holes apiece at the same course. My wife is loving it! After the first time we went out the wife said she would like to try it again. So we went again. Before the second time I gave her a quick tip about the length of her backswing, and she proceeded to shoot 8 over par with a birdie on the final hole.

To prove it was no fluke last week she wanted to play again and shot +11 for the nine. She was losing a bit of concentration on a few holes toward the end and had a few double bogeys, however during the round she had 4 straight holes where she got up and down to save par. Amazing.

Last night she told me she wants to go again this weekend. I am stoked!
