Does Swing Speed Matter?

As long as Titleist claims that swing speed does not matter and others base their recommendations mainly on swing speed it is clear that we all might get confusing results. To me it is obvious that the recommendation for a golfer with a 110+ mph swing speed cannot be the same as for someone who hits the driver with 20 or 30 mph less. With a bit of sanity and reason it seems to be obvious that this is simply not possible.

For some people and companies, choosing the right ball starts at the green and works back to the tee. Others, start at the tee.

For example, I've hit some of my longest drives with a Z Star XV (due to more roll), but it doesn't behave around and on the greens for me in a way that suits my game. My ball preference is based on the short game primarily, and then, as long as it doesn't penalize me off the tee, that's how I make my choice.

A golfer needs a golf ball that spins the right amount for his game. That has NOTHING to do with the compression of the ball and NOTHING to do with his clubhead speed.
It depends on what the player is focusing on. "Spin" can be different off a driver than off a wedge, but I think you meant in regard to short game spin. I'm in agreement with you.

"Start discussing low clubhead speed players using something other than low-compression golf balls and eventually the argument gets shifted to "hackers don't need a ball that spins like a ProV1"

Yes, connecting lower club head speed to lack of ability is short sighted. A Golf Digest article from 2012 states the average LPGA SS is 94.

Understand. I think that the choice of a golf ball has to be done carefully as it is a critical piece of equipment and it definitely does make a difference what ball someone is using.

For an advanced and better golfer like you are, it makes sense to choose a ball that allows you more control of your shots. The thing I rarely understand is that so many people don’t sacrifice durability as you don’t mis-hit many shots that really to damage to the ball.

Why not sticking to one ball, playing the ball the suits you best and get a few logo-overruns, discounted ones, lakeballs or even x-outs and stick to THE ball that suits your game best?

I'm also a bit suspect of the Titleist ad showing photos of ProV1/x ball being hit at different speeds. They infer that both models of ProV1 compress the same amount at varying club speeds. It's easy to photograph balls being hit by using high speed cameras. All Titleist has to do is select the frames that show the two balls at the same point of deformity. A bit misleading. If you were to order golf clubs from Titleist (or any company) one of the key questions asked is your club speed. Otherwise why not sell only X flex shafts and simplify stocking requirements for the manufacturers.

Agree...that Titleist ad truly made little sense. The more a ball compresses, the farther its going to go, as long as it doesn't over-compress.
