2014 NXT Tour S ball review

To start things off I am a 14 handicap with a swing spend of 85 MPH. I play a natural draw

Woods:This ball went farther then the 2012 model. I would say the increase is minimal about five yards but hey I'll take what I can get.

Long Irons:This ball was great I really noticed a difference in this area. In my last 5 rounds I was able to stop a 3 iron within 4 feet. Pretty good by my standards

Short Irons:I was pleased with this part my ball went higher and stopped quicker

Wedges:This was my favorite part I was able to back up some full sands and even one pw

Putting:I have a hard time critiquing a ball off putting. I just can't tell the difference. I'll leave this blank and peace it to you to pick up a sleeve or two

Durability: This was very durable. After five rounds they still look new

Overall: While this is much better than the 2012 model, it has a hard time really being my go to ball. Its $34, an increase of about $4, which my not seem a lot, but considering the things I gain from this ball, it seems like a lot. TGW has Taylormade Lethals for $30, which my be last years model, but it was their tour model so until I try that I will not name the NXT Tour S as my go to ball. All in All, don't go of my word. My game is probably MUCH different than yours so my experience could be completely different than yours

Driver:Ping G20
Fairways: Cleveland launcher(3,5)
Irons:Adams Idea
Wedges: Titleist Volkey(54,60)
Putter: Adams Idea

Love this ball, but not paying $40/dz. plus 13% taxes here in Canada. Not for a 2 piece Surlyn ball. If it was $30/dz. Would buy/play it in a heart beat. Will be looking at E5 or Project (a) for less money.

Yeah, it was bad enough with the Chrome being so discounted. Now with the brand-new model Project (a) at US$32/dozen everywhere it gets REALLY hard to pay more than US$20/dozen for a two piece Surlyn one.

But hey, the NXT Tour S seems to work really great for friend thejuniorgolfer and sounds like he's had good results with the previous model as well. Hard to go against something that you know works good for your game even to save a few bucks.

The e5 is really good, but not soft. It has great distance and spin. I wish it was softer. The price is great. I've never played the project a, so o can't comment on that one.
You would think the E5 would be soft, 70 compression vs. 86 for the Project (a)? Going to look at these both. Wish they made them in yellow! A lot easier to see!

Great point. Perhaps the e5 felt firm, since I was playing it side by side with the b330-RXS

Don't know what it is with me. Have no problem spending $1,000 for irons, but won't spend $50/dz. for balls?!?! I know, weird?!

I don't care what those compression charts say. The e5 feels hard as an e7 or a Titleist Velocity. It just has a super-soft cover to make it spin a ton on full shots.

One of the many issues with those published compression-tester results is that a ball will not "feel" (i.e. sound) the same as another ball with the same compression numbers and a different construction. A ball with three pieces and a ball with two pieces, both at 90 compression, will feel different. As will a ball with five layers and a three-layer ball both with 105 compression.

I play the NXT Tour for a while and tried the NXT Tour S when it first came out. I lost about 10 yards of my drive and went back to the NXT Tour - glad to hear that the distance may be better with the Tour S. However, I think that Titleist may be pricing themselves out of contention. I switched to the Gamer V2, Gamer Tour or RBZ U and had a much better ball than the NXT. TM has the Project (a) coming out at $31.99 and if it is a slightly improved RBZ U, I can't see many people paying about the same price for the NXTTour. Also, let's see what Maxfli has to offer in the low $30's.

At least for your $1000 you're getting 8 clubs. I got a new Scotty Cameron putter ($350). I'm glad I only need one.
