Best round of my life today.

toolman

Recommended Posts

Shot a 77 today, 5 over par! I've shot a 76 before but it was a par 70, also I play to about a 9 hcp. I haven't played in a little over a month and of course since I couldn't play I made a lot of changes haha:

Switched my iron shafts from Aerotech Steelfiber i110 S to Project X 6.5

Switched from Midsize+ size grips to standard

Switched from an Arm Lock putter to a Ping Anser Putter w/Flatso Ultra Grip (waiting on my versa 9 to show up)

Switched from a 3 wood to a V-Steel 4 wood

Started playing a B330 S golf ball

....and finally since I play a fade with my woods I began playing a fade/cut with my irons and just love it! Really cut down on my misses and my accuracy skyrocketed (61% GIR)

If we just count my GIR's today I was 5 under par...wow. Also almost had my first ever albatross, shorter 490 yard par 5. Hit a great drive and left me with 168 yards. Hit a cut 7 right at the flag...first time in my life (all 28 years worth) I literally hit the ball and starting walking towards the flag yelling go in! go in! and legitimately thought it was going to go in. Ended up resting less then a foot from the hole for eagle. And to top it all off I finished birdie birdie!

Very excited!

Great round and finishing birdie birdie must have been icing on the cake.

The problem is you said you hit a cut 7 168. This is golf wrx so I'm assuming you meant SW.

Yeah a nice little ricochet off a hill haha! Then again I was crushing my drives all day long today. Really love that J40 driver! I noticed very quickly with my irons that when playing the cut with my irons I need to take a little more club.

Making birds is the most fun. 10 bogey and 5 birds is way more fun than 5 bogey and 13 pars. Although I will say 5 birds and 5 doubles (rest pars) would be a little frustrating for a 77. Making birds is the hard part keep it up! Nice round!

No doubt! According to my little stat book today was my the most birds/eagles I have ever made in a round. Very pumped!

I needed this post, always play a natural fade and yet still aim at the flag everytime just to miss right most of the time, why not club up and play my natural swing? Who cares if I'd only hit a 7 iron 160....I mean 210! Congrats on the nice round man!

Thanks guys, realized quite a few things over the last 2 months that has really helped me.

-I took my older ping anser putter and put a versa stripe down it and never realized that I was not keeping the head square at impact, to me square always looked closed. Dramatically helped me keep the ball on line.

-The super stroke flatso ultra grip is easily the best putter grip i have ever used. Fits perfect in my hands (not to big, not to small) and just really reinforces the idea of keeping the head square during the stroke.

-Finally my wedges, I was awful at chipping, I could never get the ball to stop ... like 20-30 feet of roll out. So I've spent the last month pretty much just chipping and trying to figure out what was going on. Finally put it all together that I was shutting down the club face all the way through my swing. I was putting a ton of top spin on the ball which obviously proved very inconsistent. Keeping the club neutral to open during the swing has just helping my short game more then anything. Plus I now try to look at the ball right at the dimple that I want to hit during the swing.

Very cool. Love those "best round of my life" kind of days. Mine usually stops at about the 17th tee after I realize that I'm having the best round of my life so kudos for the birdie birdie finish.

Great Job!!! We sound like we have similiar games.

I started last season as a 14 and ended as a 9.5.

I play with a few guys that are 5 to 8 handicaps. I think I was about an 11 when I finally broke 80. Shot a 79. Lost $23. Finished 3rd in the foursome. Best round of my life and it cost me $23. About a month later, I shot a 77 (lost $9 that day).

Congrats on getting over that "hump" that seems to jump in front of everyone's game at some point. I remember when I got over the hump and my game drastically improved, it was very exciting. Enjoy!

Great round!!!

Btw, since so many people are talking about going the other way, what made you go from the steelfibers back to steel? What were the steelfibers not doing for you?
[/quote]

Well I actually look at this the other way around...what made me switch to Steelfibers. I was originally playing the PX 6.0 and have been playing them for quite awhile. I was playing some of the best golf of my life and of course naturally I wanted to change everything haha. Since my favorite golfer is kuchar I of course have always wanted to try the fibers. A deal came my way in which I could trade my current j40 cb irons with the px shafts for another set of j40 cb irons with the steelfibers. I mean just right away on the range I was not impressed, lost distance and accuracy. But over the last 4-5 months I have been working really hard at trying to get them to fit in my game but I was just so inconsistent. My GIR % stayed about the same but I was further away from the hole then I was with the PX shafts. Now what really sparked me getting rid of them what my upcoming golf trip. I could sell the shafts for about 200 and since I have a good hookup for shaft pulls I was able to source the 6.5 shafts for very cheap. I went with the 6.5 this time to help with my accuracy and I have been slowly trying to switch everything over to an X-stiff. Not knocking the fibers but for me the PX shafts are far superior for my swing.
