SLDR 430 JDM Question

Gamble Gamble

Recommended Posts

I am buying a JDM SLDR 430 head but I need to figure out whether my Ping Anser's Ahina shaft will fit the JDM 430.

Do the US SLDR 430 and the JDM 430 use the same size for shafts?

Do they require different TP adapters?

Are the lie angles the same for both?

I would not use the same adapters, even if they .335 tip. Adapter adjustments for SLDR head, are not likey to equal another OEM's head, if for no other reason than, heads are different in dimension, weighting, core and hosel length.

No clue about lie angles but they will both use a .335 shaft. Didn't this get answered in your other thread? You can look for lie angle specs for both on tm and tm Japan's website.

Thank you - yeah I did not see an answer and since I somewhat changed the topic I might as well start a new one. I figure if someone else has a similar question it will be easier for them to find the answer through the search feature.

I meant the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) version of the TaylorMade SLDR 430. Sorry if I did not make that clear.

The lie angle of the usdm and jdm sldr's are not the same. jdm version is 4* (3?) flatter if memory serves correct.

The tip adpter for the sldr is the same for both markets.

I know that's true least with TM SLDR 430 TP in Japan: it comes .05 open and 56* lie angle.

What kind of price are you looking at for that set up? If you don't mind disclosing?

The jdm head cost me around $500 and the Ahina shaft I already have. I would think it would cost like 6 to 8 depending on what you believe the ahina is worth. Ive seen them go for 350 and Ive seen them go for 120 on ebay.

I'm really excited to try it out with that shaft. The shaft I used on the launch monitor was the stock offering and is higher launching and higher spin than the ahina.
I believe the backspin RPMs were around 2300 with the stock offering and I am hoping to get the spin a touch below 2000 with the ahina

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got the JDM SLDR 430 with Ahina shaft. I do not think I have been this excited to use a piece of equipment since my grandfather gave me his Ping Eye 2s back when I was a teenager.

I feel like Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man when he first uses the Magnetic Accelerator Gun.

Be well.

Will do - I need to try it out in normal conditions to see how it performs. I only had one round with it, but it was exceptionally goofy conditions so I did not play my typical hit 13 driver shots in a round. My data points are too limited, however my initial indication was that typical shots with this club wanted to go more right than a standard driver.

I let you know how it plays this weekend. I will try to get yardages and dispersion with my golfshot app if possible. (My golfshot reset and I cannot find any of my old rounds)

I did get to hit the us 430 sldr today. Very nice feel, not terrible forgiveness at all. Looks great at address. Stock shaft for me was spinning like crazy 3700 rpm's. I have a demo Quadra fire express that I tried in the same head and the spin dropped almost 1000 RPMs. The 460 version had a better feel to me and was the same spin but 12 yards longer. My 2014 Gloire was still the lowest in terms of spin. Distance was very close to the 460 sldr. The us 460 sldr is a great head with a shaft upgrade. I was surprised that it matched the Gloire in terms of distance. The Gloire is still the feel and forgiveness king.

This was my mini write up on it (I am waiting to get more data points)

It is outstanding. I have never been a TM fanboy, but this driver is very long. My initial view of this club is that with its lie angle at 56* and slightly open face, it is an anti left club, which is what I need. My misses tend to be a hook. This club does not eliminate the possibility of the hook, but it definitely does mitigate the frequency and intensity of each mishit. When coupled with the Ahina, the ball has a flat penetrating trajectory which I am very excited to try out when the conditions are better.

One thing I noticed was that with the smaller 430 head, I seem to hit the sweet spot more, this may be mental but the results are real as most of my shots are touching the middle groove in the face. I actually thought the smaller head would lead to more mishits on the toe, but the opposite is true.

I'm playing the JDM SLDR 430 with a GD MT-6X. Coming from my R11s I'm noticing a lot less back and side spin. As a high launch/high spin player it has helped my trajectory and accuracy. After about 6 range sessions my distance is a little better too. Like the OP said, I feel like I hit the sweet spot more with the 430 as apposed to my old 460 driver. I'll get my first actual round with it Sunday, can't wait!

Mine should arrive this week. Haven't looked this forward to a new club arriving in the post for a long time.
Big decision will be what shaft to play in it on the weekend. The stock Mitsubishi TM1-114 or my GD ADDI 6s out of my SLDR 460.
[/quote]

I was like a 5 year old kid who woke up 3 hours too early on Christmas for an entire week. I have never felt more confident in a driver ever.

The only one that I felt almost as confident with was the BIg Bertha II, which makes sense as the lie angle for both resist a hook and allow me to get a little more inside on my backswing to create more of a draw.

The reason I ended up with the SLDR 430 was because I went to test the new BIg Bertha and Alpha but was astonished at the low spin/longer carry numbers on the 430.

I noticed a drop in the side spin numbers too, and although I should probably just stick to straight shots, I could still get a slight cut and a slight draw if necessary, but the overhook and "power fade" became a thing of the past. Playing from the fairway 50% more made my first two rounds much easier. I cannot wait to see the handicap fall after our first adjustment on May 1.

I generally tee'd the ball up pretty high with my Ping Anser at about 2/3 of the ball above the crown of the driver. Something I noticed with this club is that the more optimum launch numbers came from dropping the tee height to approximately 1/4-1/2 of a ball above the crown rather than 2/3. Maybe this is obvious, but as I used the higher lofts the lower the tee height the better the trajectory. I was reading an article if I can find it I will post it.

It's interesting that you mention the height of teeing the ball up as a common fault of mine is teeing it up too low and hitting a number drives out of the bottom 1/2 below center. I struggle to get more than 1/2 the ball above the crown for fear of popping one off the top. I think that's why a have a preference for the smaller headed drivers as I can tee the ball where it's looks right by eye with no club head behind it. Freak, I know.

Happy to report my first round withy the new JDM SLDR 430 was a success! Loved the flight, spin and distance I was getting from it. Even my usual playing partners were surprised on how much further and how many more fairways I hit.

As stated above I have found teeing the ball slightly lower works best for me. I was a very high tee'er of the ball before, for the 430 I go to my normal tee height, them a little bit past. Nothing to crazy, but definitely a little lower. I did miss the center of the face a couple times Sunday, catching the ball low on the club. To my surprise though distance was still good even though my ball was hit very low.

Got my jdm 10 today. The thing looks so good. I cant wait to smash some balls with it. I have the ts 7.3x shaft in it. It is 45.5 inches at d6 swingweight. I like d5 or d6 looks good. I also have some 8.2 speeders to try in it. Will post my findings...
